SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sailor hit by a spinning helicopter blade earlier this week at MCAS Camp Pendleton has died.MCAS Camp Pendleton said the sailor died Saturday morning from injuries sustained after the spinning tail rotor blade of a UH-01Y Venom Marine helicopter struck him.The helicopter was on deck at MCAS Camp Pendleton when the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.RELATED: Sailor critically injured by spinning helicopter blade at MCAS Camp PendletonThe sailor was brought to Scripps La Jolla Medical Facility with critical injuries after the incident.Officials are withholding the sailor's name pending family notification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are jobs for college students. And then there's Woodstock's Pizza. Woodstock's is not an ordinary college job. "We look at all of our extended employees as part of the Woodstock's family," says Jeff Ambrose, CEO of Woodstock's Pizza. If Woodstock's is a family, then Jeff Ambrose is the Godfather. Ambrose began his career with Woodstock's right out of college back in the early 1980s. He's grown up with the restaurant since his college days at Oregon State doing everything from delivery to management. It was then Jeff learned about treating employees like family from original owner Chuck Woodstock decades ago in Corvallis, Oregon. "Chuck had this vision of having a Woodstock's Pizza in every college town west of the Mississippi," adds Ambrose. RELATED: City of San Diego's 10 steps to launching a small business or startupSo, when Chuck decided to bring a Woodstock's to Santa Barbara in 1982, he asked Jeff to help open it. Not only that, Jeff was given the opportunity to own 25% of the restaurant. That opportunity for employees to own part of the franchise continues to this day with Jeff. "Because I think it's the right thing to do," Ambrose answers when asked why. In the mid-1980s Chuck Woodstock died in a plane crash. It was Jeff who took over the chain in California including two restaurants here in San Diego. And to this day, his managers have opportunities to buy stock in Woodstock's."That was a big part for me of saying we want to give back," says Ambrose. Employees are paid above minimum wage; those who work more than 30 hours a week are offered medical and dental benefits. Woodstock's was doing this long before the Affordable Care Act became law. "My thought is that we want to keep and retain the best people we can keep and retain," says Ambrose confidently. Yesenia Rios is a great example. "I personally need a job that can be flexible with me," says Rios. Yesenia is an engineering student at San Diego State. She started at Woodstock's a couple of years ago making pizzas. Now she's in administration working in the company's I.T. Department. For some, it is just a college job. But for the Ambroses, they're all family."It's very heartwarming, I tear up," says Ambrose holding back tears. "This may not be their lifelong job like it has been for me, but we hope to give them skills that they can take other places." 2868
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pandemic, protests, riots, there's a lot of stressors out there, but Licensed Psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel has a few ways to find positivity."We have to go through those motions to be effective and to make sure that we can therefore get to a place where we can actually feel positive," Dr. Carcel said.She said cut out negativity, from social media to people you know, "there are so many things that we can feel terrible about right now and that's something we have to honor and we can also find that one moment in the day where we stopped and smelled the flowers."She said focus on the positives, find three things each day you are grateful for. Doing this each day trains your brain to look for the positives. She also said exercise and advocacy are two great ways to change your perspective."Advocacy, you know helping out, doing volunteer work. If you really feel passionate about what's going on right now you can advocate, you have a voice and your voice matters," Carcel said writing leaders is very important right now.Voices were raised across the U.S. at peaceful protests, creating positive change, interactions and dialogue this week after the tragic death of George Floyd."I'm really going to recommend if you have a friend or somebody of a different ethnicity or culture, engage in a productive conversation. We are all in this together, we are all able to understand each other if we put our judgements aside and just listen," Dr. Carcel said those positive interactions are essential right now.The discomfort many feel right now show they are growing, she added. 1613
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The second phase of the San Diego's styrofoam ban went into effect Friday. Local restaurants are ditching styrofoam for environmentally friendly products. Customers will see more sustainable items made from paper and aluminum. The transition to more sustainable produces also comes with a price. "It's a little more expensive but we understand why we have to do it," said Maggie Rojas from Giorgino's Cheesesteaks in Golden Hill. "Little by little we started the transition, so we didn't wait until the last minute to do it.""We all care about the environment so we want to help out," said Rojas. "It’s a big problem."There are some exceptions to the rules. Grocery stores will be able to use styrofoam trays for packaging raw meat, fish and poultry through 2021.
