DENVER -- For years, Denver Parks and Recreation has had a goose management program in place that involved hazing and relocation. Now, with the help of the US Department of Agriculture, they are trying a new approach.Parks and Rec officials say the easiest way to lower the geese population is by capturing and processing them as food for families in need, or for charitable organizations.Executive Director of Denver Parks and Recreation, Scott Gilmore, says the USDA is in charge of all the steps.“They are actually collecting geese in specific parks and they are taking them to a processor where they are processed and they are donating them to needy families.”It’s something many cities across the country have already been doing for years.Parks and rec says this plan will help them address the population problem directly.The USDA began collecting birds about two weeks ago and will continue to do so throughout specific Denver parks.What is still unclear is where around Denver the meat will go after it is processed. 1037

Estevan Almanza has worked in the construction industry for nearly a decade, with his pay increasing from to 22 an hour.Over the past few years, he’s seen this industry struggle to find qualified workers. That has been putting extra stress on him and his crew.“A lot of work on us,” Almanza said. “It’s more tiring, but I guess more hours.”And now, it's more concerning because the impact of this labor shortage is being felt across the country.Associated Builders and Contractors projects the construction industry will need nearly half a million more workers in 2020 and an additional 740,000 more in 2021.This shortage of construction workers could end up costing you.“The laborers, they affect everybody’s lives,” said Zsuzsa Balogh, Ph.D., the program coordinator in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology at Metropolitan State University of Denver.She says the reasons for the shortage range from retirement to construction workers retraining themselves for other industries.With less skilled laborers and more of the qualified workers clocking overtime, Balogh believes that extra cost is passed on to consumers.“You can see the increase of the cost,” she said. “Basically, somewhere that money has to show, and the consumers will be the ones to pay that extra money.”In an attempt to help attract more skilled workers, some contractors are offering improved incentives like health care, 401k options and yearly raises.“It’s as bad as we’ve ever seen,” said Todd Smith, vice president of operations for Lawrence Construction Company. “Very few people are going into this industry.” Smith says this shortage of skilled workers is creating a timeline of concern.“Right now, we’ve had ads out for certain positions for six months and haven’t gotten any responses yet,” he said. Smith believes in addition to the spike in retirements, there’s also fewer construction workers because there’s less vocational training available.“We’ve pushed all of our young people into college which college is great for some people for some people but not for everyone,” Smith said.As companies like Lawrence Construction continue to struggle to find staff, bids keep getting higher.“It’s going to be driving the prices up, because it’s now with the labor shortage, now the people can demand a higher pay,” Smith said.Though construction is hard work, Smith says its can also be very rewarding.“You can drive down a stretch of road and tell you family, ‘I worked on this job’” he said. “And you can do that for many years to come.” 2543

DAYTON, Ohio — The city of Dayton battened down the hatches Saturday for a rally event held by the Ku Klux Klan.After the events of Charlottesville, city officials in Ohio weren't taking any chances as the notorious hate group exercised their first amendment rights. Officers and security aid came in from Cincinnati, Columbus and even Toledo as counterprotesters poured into Dayton.The city of Dayton blocked streets with large trucks Saturday and brought in officers from other jurisdictions to keep protesters separated from members of an obscure Klan group called the Honorable Sacred Knights.The group obtained a permit for the rally months ago. City officials and community leaders organized an effort called Dayton United Against Hate.In the end, only nine members of the Klan showed up, and could barely be seen through the double chain-link fence and wall of police. Protesters rallied around the fence, chanting anti-hate rhetoric and waving signs at the members inside.Although the event ended without a hitch, or even a single arrest, Dayton itself didn't get through as unscathed as things may have looked.Dayton City Manager Shelley Dickstein said the city estimated it spent about 0,000 on security costs for the event.City officials said many of the security measures implemented Saturday were intended specifically to keep Dayton residents safe with concealed carry and open carry of weapons.Dickstein said the city estimated around 0,000 was spent on personnel costs and 0,000 on materials needed for the rally.“We have very little way to recapture that spent money,” Dickstein said.Richard Biehl, Dayton police chief, said he was “very pleased” with security Saturday.“This clearly was a safety challenge for our city and our community,” he said.Biehl said his department did not make any arrests, and no use of force or injuries were reported. Entrepreneur Kevin O'Leary, who is best known for his appearance in the hit TV show "Shark Tank," was involved in a night time boating accident that left two people dead, his agent told CNN.The incident happened over the weekend in Ontario, Canada.O'Leary was a passenger in a boat when it collided with another, his agent Jay Sures said.Sures told CNN that O'Leary's wife, Linda, was driving at the time.The collision left a man in the second boat dead, said Joe Scali, spokesman for the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police. A woman in the second boat succumbed to her injuries Tuesday, police said. A passenger in O'Leary's boat was also injured.Police say three other boaters were injured, and were treated and released from a local hospital.No charges have been filed.Linda O'Leary was given a DUI test, which she passed, according to O'Leary's agent.Asked for comment, Sures directed CNN to a statement O'Leary provided to TMZ.It said, "Late Saturday night I was a passenger in a boat that had a tragic collision with another craft that had no navigation lights on and then fled the scene of the accident. I am fully cooperating with authorities."Police would not confirm any further details because the incident is under investigation.The entrepreneur also told TMZ, "Out of respect for the families who have lost loved ones and to fully support the ongoing investigation, I feel it is inappropriate to make further comments at this time.
