(KGTV) -- One person has been injured after a school bus crash on Coronado Wednesday afternoon, police say. According to police, the crash happened on 9th Street and Orange Avenue just after 1:30 p.m.Police say the person injured was riding on the bus which belongs to Coronado Unified School District. The district later put out a statement saying, "no significant injuries" were reported.  436

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 21-year-old sailor died after falling from the USS Nimitz Friday night. According to U.S. Naval Air Forces, the sailor fell from one of the ship’s aircraft elevators. The USS Nimitz was in port at Naval Air Station North Island. The 21-year-old suffered serious injuries from the fall and died Saturday morning, according to the Navy. The name of the sailor hasn’t been released at this time and the nature of the accident is under investigation. A sailor from USS Nimitz passed away early this morning from injuries sustained in an accident aboard ship last night. The sailor fell from one of the ship’s aircraft elevators in a down position. Crews at a construction site in Denver, Colorado, are working around the clock, trying to keep up with an increased demand by building more housing.“It’s getting really interesting out there isn’t it,” said Stephen Myers CEO at Thrive Home Builders.Myers says though the real estate market is booming across the country, an increased cost of lumber is cutting into builders’ profits.“The increase is ,000 to 12,000 per house,” he said of his current project. “And we’re concerned about the ultimate price impact for our buyers.”According to the National Association of Home Builders, the price of lumber has increased by 173% since mid-April to an all-time high in August.“Without a doubt, the housing prices will go up because lumber is a very important input of houses,” said Kishore Kulkarni, Ph.D. a professor of economics at MSU Denver.Kulkarni says there’s multiple reasons why lumber prices have skyrocketed during the last few months, including higher transportation costs, some lumber mills shutting down, low interest rates and more people looking to purchase homes during the pandemic.“The supply of lumber is having a lot of bottlenecks because of COVID-19,” he said,This is pushing up the price of a typical new home by more than ,000, according to the National Association of Home Builders.Back on the job site, Myers’ team is pulling out the blueprints and looking for ways to offset higher lumber prices.“Hopefully the lumber supply can rise to the occasion to meet the increased demand,” Myers said.While crews continue to frame new houses, experts predict the cost of lumber won’t level.So, for now, prices will continue going through the roof. 1676

(KGTV) - Caltrans has begun installing spikes along the Coronado Bridge, designed to deter suicide jumpers. “It’s more of a psychological deterrent than anything else,” says Rhonda Haiston, the founder of the Coronado San Diego Bridge Collaborative for Suicide Prevention. Her group has campaigned to get barriers installed on the bridge.The four-inch spikes may not serve as a physical barrier, but they may slow people down she says. “If we can just give them a little extra effort they have to go through, we can stop them, talk to them,” says Haiston. Caltrans said the project had an estimated cost of 0,000 to 0,000. The spikes will be placed along both sides of the bridge across the 2.1 mile span. The project will take several nights, with lane closures beginning at 8 p.m.Meanwhile, Caltrans says it is still researching other long term solutions that could consist of fences, heightened barriers, glass panels or nets.
