(KGTV) - You can leave the lights of San Diego behind at dark places that are prime for viewing meteor showers.Want to go stargazing? Try these San Diego County locations for the best viewing experience: Jess Martin Park (Julian): Head up to Julian to catch the meteor shower. Blair Valley Campground (Anza-Borrego): There's really no bad spot in Anza-Borrego for stargazing. Its distance from San Diego makes it prime for some great viewing. Palomar Observatory: Palomar Mountain is the site of an observatory, so there's no wonder why the area is great for catching the stars. Laguna Campground: Mount Laguna has long been an area for camping and an escape from the city for San Diegans. While the Mount Laguna Observatory has the power to look deep into the galaxy, you'll have to bring your own gear at the campground to view the dark skies. Torrey Pines State Reserve: Torrey Pines State Reserve can provide some surprising star gazing despite being as close to highways as it is. The glider port has been a spot for those who don't want to make the hours-long trek east. A 10-year-old Great Pyrenees found himself in a tight situation after he somehow found his way into a culvert near his home. Cheatham County Animal Control posted photos from Wednesday's rescue on its Facebook page. Jack’s owners noticed he was missing after he failed to eat his morning meal. They heard whining coming from a 15-inch-wide culvert near their house and called 911. "He was in so much pain, I guess he just couldn't go anymore. He just couldn't hardly catch his breath," Pete Greco, Jack's owner, said. Fire officials arrived and began cooling him off from the end of the culvert. Greco, along with firefighters, animal control, and construction workers from across the street, began to dig and cut through the culvert. Crews had to slice the culvert at the edge of the driveway without tearing up the concrete. “Without the ability to use a control pole (nothing to grab onto as he was faced away from us) we ended up having to remove a little bit more of the culvert top, and we crawled inside the culvert and hauled his keister out," animal control wrote in the Facebook post. “You could literally see the relief in his eyes, you could also hear the sighs of relief behind us from the family eagerly awaiting to see their little boy safe and sound.” "I don't see how he would have gotten in there," Greco said. "He probably smelled something." Jack was removed on a gurney and taken to a local animal clinic to be checked out. On Thursday, Jack was resting at home, and Greco said he plans to put up something that will prevent an animal from entering the culvert again. "I mean, he was stuck. He would have died right there. I would have tore that concrete up if I had to," Greco said. "I mean, these dogs are kind of like my kids, you know? They're family."  1871

In this story that is Positively San Diego we meet an east county woman who has used that stitch countless times to spread warmth to those who need it the most."By the way, I'm knitting as you're talking to me," said Spring Valley resident Karen De Vos as our Zoom interview got underway.I responded, "I love it!"As she began to list the many places where knitting comes naturally to her, "When I'm watching TV, when I'm in the car, if I'm in a doctor's office, or if I'm in a movie theatre."De Vos said she learned the craft when she was 9 from her mother. And over the years she's created keepsakes like Christmas stockings for family and friends."Then the Santa Claus on one side," said De Vos, showing off one of her stockings, "And then the reindeer and then the trees and then comes the foot."De Vos enjoyed the creativity, but it took on new meaning in the early '90s when a charity drive asked her to knit hats to help the homeless stay warm."In the last three years we all know homelessness has become a terrific problem," says Devos, so, as the years have gone on since I've been knitting, I sort of felt maybe I was doing a better calling then I had ever done before."For some 30 years now, de Vos has been knitting 60-plus hats a year for those in need, sticking with the same pattern while mixing up the colors. And as she points out, they're very stretchy, so one size fits all. She dons one of the hats to make the point."Some people like to wear the flap all the way down, but I think it looks cuter with the flap up."The former middle school teacher and librarian says it's her way of giving back. Her hats go to Father Joe's Villages and the "Voices of our City Choir," famed for showcasing the singing of San Diego's unsheltered."When you get to be my age there aren't too many active things you can go out and do, you know, for charity purposes. But at least I can sit without any movement or anything and create something that will go for good," De Vos said.And as she has knitted some 2,000 hats and continues to knit through this interview, she mentions, "I even can knit when I'm reading too."Karen De Vos lives with her husband of more than 60-years at a senior living community in Spring Valley. She says he's very supportive. (KGTV) — On Aug. 9, 1969, the doors of Disneyland's spookiest attraction creaked open and invited guests inside to meet its ghostly residents.The spirited New Orleans Square ride was the first attraction to open without Walt Disney's direct supervision at the theme park, according to Disney. And while Disney reviewed early concepts, he didn't live long enough to see the completed ride.The idea for the mansion started in 1952 as an early concept sketch by Harper Goff when the theme park was still being developed. Construction started in 1961 and the gothic, Victorian exterior was finished in 1963.
