DENVER, Colo. — Several Denver police officers stepped up to make sure the daughter of a fallen detective had the perfect wedding. “That was a really hard thing to think about, walking down the aisle without him,” Kourtney Krietemeier told KMGH. Her father, Denver Police Det. Donnie Young, was killed in the line of duty in 2005.Her aunt recommended having some of Young’s former colleagues walk her down the aisle and her mother offered to step in for the father-daughter dance. On her wedding day, she danced with her mother for a few minutes, but when the song changed — to one she instantly recognized — she knew something was up. “When I was super young, my dad got me a small replica of his badge with his badge number on it and he played that song when he gave it to me,” she said. “I was shocked. I just knew the tears were going to be flowing.”One of the Denver police officers who worked with her father took her mother's spot and danced with her. One by one, her father's multiple former colleagues took their turn dancing with the bride. She said they told her things she would have heard from her father that day — how proud they were of her, how excited they were for her. And how special her father was to them. Cuba Gooding Jr. has been charged with forcible touching, a misdemeanor, and sex abuse in the third degree relating to an alleged groping incident last weekend in New York City.Gooding voluntarily surrendered to the NYPD for questioning on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to the charges in a Manhattan court.The actor was released on his own recognizance after the judge set the next court date for June 26.Gooding has been very cooperative with police and expects to be fully exonerated, his attorney, Mark Heller, said during a news conference."In my 50 years, almost, of practicing law, I have never seen a case like this one because there is not a scintilla of criminal culpability that can be attributed to Mr. Cuba Gooding Jr. after I have extensively, with my staff, reviewed the video of almost two hours which reflects the entire event for which we are here today," Heller told reporters."Mr. Gooding has not acted inappropriately in any shape or form. CHICAGO — From May to October, a team of people is working every day, even weekends, to look for dead birds on the ground in downtown Chicago.Annually, about 5,000 birds that are not native to the region are injured or killed after colliding into Chicago’s glassy reflective skyscrapers. The team looking for the birds is documenting what kind are coming though the city.The birds live in rain forests and wild areas and are not experienced with tall buildings, group members say. It’s a foreign environment for them, so they are easily hurt, says group member Annette Prince.The group aims to decrease the number of birds killed in the city and is pushing for more bird-friendly building designs throughout the nation. One suggestion the team has is to turn lights out at night.“We are No. 1 in the urban lighting we put out,” Prince said. Less glass helps with the problem, too.“It’s estimated that there are a billion birds a year killed in windows, with a huge concentrations in cities like Chicago,” she said.This is something the U.S. can fix, Prince said.“There are things you can do to make buildings safe, and to protect these birds that are so valuable to us,” she said. 1192

Childcare facilities are struggling with how they will continue operating during the COVID-19 pandemic.“Providing care right now is expensive. We necessarily need sanitizing equipment, supportive PPE equipment. We need to ensure that ratios are high and group size is low, and that the physical space and the distances that are needed as well as the equipment and resources are available,” said Lynette Fraga, Executive Director of Child Care Aware of America. Child Care Aware of America says it's possible that anywhere from 30 to 50% of facilities nationwide could close permanently, depending on how long the pandemic goes on. That's with the increasing cost of much needed added health and safety measures. Also, some places are getting less money because they're keeping classrooms smaller now.“That means those providers that are open those prices may really be affected for parents, so any way you may look at this equation, the price of care is a real concern for parents and the price for providers to provide that care is a real concern,” said Fraga. The organization says some of the billion the industry is asking Congress for would help families with this cost. It adds that families need to be the ones to raise concerns about access to affordable care.Childcare facilities are planning for what comes next if we see another spike in COVID-19 cases this fall.
