(KGTV) - Day one of the Scripps National Spelling Bee is in the b-a-g.Spellers underwent the second round of preliminaries Tuesday in Maryland, kicking things off with the word "unicameral," meaning to have a single chamber.Going into Wednesday, 452 spellers will take the stage in the next round. Sixty-four spellers will not be moving onto the final preliminary competition. The finals immediately follow on Thursday and Friday.Local spellers NingXin Sun, of San Diego, Kevin Luo, of San Diego, and Ethan Anderson, of Escondido, each spelled their words correctly to make it to the next round — and hopefully to the finals, where they'll compete for a ,000 first prize.The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be streamed live online on WatchESPN. 798

(KGTV) – Federal investigators are continuing to look into the backgrounds and motives of the El Paso and Dayton shooting suspects to determine if the shootings were instances of hate crime that may have been inspired by the Poway synagogue shooting.<br /><br />The El Paso shooter was taken into custody after killing at least 20 at a Walmart store on Aug. 3. Investigators said the 21-year-old suspect pulled the trigger just 20 minutes after posting a racist manifesto.<br /> <br />Hours later, police in Dayton shot and killed a man who opened fire at a downtown entertainment district. Multiple people, including the gunman’s sister, died at the hands of the gunman.<br /> <br />Sociologist Dr. Pete Simi studies political extremism and violence at Chapman University. Pretty young."<br /><br />Simi also said the young, tech-savvy generation connects with like-minded people on anonymous online forums like 8chan.<br /> <br />In his manifesto published on 8Chan, the El Paso shooter posted: "In general, I support the Christchurch shooter and his manifesto. This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas."<br /><br />Earlier this year, the suspect in the Poway synagogue shooting shared a similar message on 8chan in which he also praised the work of the New Zealand mosque shooter.<br /><br />"In some cases, they talk about is how you could've been more active, or you could've killed more people if they had done X-Y-Z," Simi said. "Or they're discussing the relative merits of this type of violence and pros and cons. It's really a cesspool environment."<br /><br />At this point, the Dayton suspect's motive has not been confirmed. But he too is a young, lone-acting shooter who wore body armor. FBI investigators are now digging into his digital background to find answers.<br /><br />"What may connect them though is there may be some kind of copycat aspect to it," Simi said.<br /><br />In light of the mass shootings, Frederick Brennan, the founder of 8chan, demanded the site be shut down.<br /><br />He said he created the website in 2013 as a free speech forum, but relinquished ownership in 2015. 2826

(CNN) -- Godspeed!A historic cathedral in England has installed a giant indoor fairground slide, supposedly so that visitors can see its roof up close.The 50-foot-high ride, known in Britain as a helter-skelter, was unveiled on Thursday at Norwich Cathedral in eastern England and will be open to the public to enjoy for 10 days.The church, completed in 1145, insists the initiative is no gimmick -- in fact, a clergyman says the idea came to him while he was visiting the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican."I had the slightly risky thought of, 'I know this is amazing, but actually the ceiling at Norwich Cathedral is every bit as wonderful,'" Reverend Canon Andy Bryant told the Press Association news agency."We have one of the greatest collections of medieval roof bosses anywhere in northern Europe. The trouble is they are so high up that most people never get a chance to really appreciate them.""And so was born the idea -- could we get people up higher to these roof bosses and so appreciate that they are exquisite art as they are the most beautiful pieces of stone carving but also the story that's captured within them, which is the story of the Bible."The installation, set up in front of a large stained glass window, is part of a program called "Seeing It Differently."It follows a similar move by Rochester Cathedral, which unveiled a mini golf course in its central area last month -- and comes as churches across the UK struggle to stem a decline in attendance.In a post on the cathedral's website, Bryant admitted that the idea could prove controversial with churchgoers."I get why for some the image of a giant helter-skelter sitting in this great Nave feels slightly shocking," he wrote. Gavin Newsom on Monday announced updated guidance for hair and nail salons and barbershops in California that would allow those businesses to shift their operations outdoors amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.Last week, Newsom announced the shutdown of indoor operations, including beauty services, as COVID-19 cases across the state increased.In the days following Newsom’s order, restaurants were able to move dining outdoors, but barbershops and hair/nail salons were not able to do work outside.During a Monday press briefing, Newsom said the state updated its regulations for barbershops and hair salons for when they are moved outdoors.Some of the guidelines include:-- Face coverings required for employees and customers during service; workers should also have access to face shields, gloves and other personal protective equipment-- Outdoor operations must be under a tent, canopy or other sun shelter as long as no more than one side is closed, allowing sufficient outdoor air movement-- Temperature screenings for employees; screenings recommended for customers upon arrival-- Businesses should confirm customer appointments in advance and ask if a customer or someone in their household exhibits COVID-19 symptoms-- Stagger appointments to reduce customer congestion at business; this will also give business time to clean/sanitize-- Recommended expansion of operating hours to space out customer appointments-- Suspend walk-in visits-- Frequently disinfect commonly used surfaces and workstations-- Clean and disinfect all electrical and non-electrical tools-- Ensure any outdoor shade or outdoor working area has the same ventilation and airflow as the outdoors-- Have designated outdoor area for customers to waitClick here to view the state’s complete guidance sheet for hair salons and barbershops.For nail salons, some of the guidelines for operating outdoors include:-- Clients will be asked to apply hand sanitizer before nail services-- Employees should wear face shield with face covering when performing service on client’s face or neck areas (when he/she is not wearing face covering)-- Clients won’t be allowed to have a manicure and pedicure on the same visit-- Workers must have disposable gloves when performing services-- Businesses will have to evaluate if plastic partitions can be used between employees and clients; implement social distancing of workstationsClick here to view the state’s complete guidance sheet for nail salons and other personal care services, including massage therapy. 2549
