Deputies in Indian River County, Florida were on alligator patrol Friday.The sheriff's office received a call about an alligator on the loose at a local Target. Deputies Bobby Gage and Victoria Pianelli were called to the scene to inspect the situation. DETROIT, Mich. — Thousands of packages are stacked up inside a metro Detroit mail distribution center as a perfect storm of the pandemic, holiday mail volume, and what some call poor planning, which could spoil the holidays.Those mail delays are also costing local business owners dearly.A beautiful ad celebrating the hardworking men and women of the US Postal Service is airing on TV these days, as a singer croons, “I’ll be home for Christmas, you can count on me.” But for small business owners like Alicia Christensen, the post office has hit a low note.“I’m not counting on them, because I had to shut my shop down. I can’t rely on the flowers to get there before Christmas,” said Christensen.Christensen makes hand-painted aluminum wreaths and wall art shaped like flowers. In January, this artist from Wixom opened her “Bendable Blooms” shop on the website ‘Etsy.’ But the wreaths she mailed to customers on Nov. 29 got stuck “in transit” at the USPS Detroit Network Distribution Center (NDC) in Allen Park.“My Etsy shoppers are starting to contact me, wanting either their money back or wanting to know where these are at,” said Christensen.Christensen was forced to choose between losing about 0 by refunding customers, or getting bad reviews which can have a long-term impact on her business. So she temporarily halted her online sales, sent refunds, all the while anxiously watches for shipping updates of the packages stuck at Allen Park.And she’s not the only one wondering why her packages haven’t moved out of Michigan.Today the 7 Investigators counted at least 50 tractor-trailers waiting to get on to the Allen Park USPS property, not to mention the dozens of trailers stacked with packages already inside.“It has mail from wall to wall,” said American Postal Workers Union Detroit Local 295 President Keith Combs. “This is something that I have never seen in my 30 years of being a postal employee.”Combs represents Detroit-area postal drivers, clerks, and maintenance workers. Combs says the USPS restructuring ordered by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy added to the backlog caused by the pandemic and normal holiday mail volume increases. Combs says some of that restructuring means employees based in metro Detroit now report to managers out of state.“They should have started hiring these seasonal people much earlier than they did, I would say back in May, June or July-- getting prepared to bring those new people on. The tractor-trailer guys that I represent would have needed to have more trailers, even if they needed to be purchased or rented. So you can have a place to have this mail staged to be able to move smoothly from point A to point B,” Combs told 7 Investigator Heather Catallo. “I don’t think that happened. And there needed to be some thought process on how the mail flow was going to operate inside the building so that the safety of the employees was addressed and you didn’t have so much mail that there was not even walking room in some of these plants.”Combs says letters are also piled up at the USPS facility on W. Fort Street in Detroit. He says he and other union leaders reached out to management last May to prepare for the holiday “peak” as postal workers call it. Combs said their requests fell on deaf ears.“Postal employees are so diligent in what they do and feel like they need to do a great job all the time, as they do. I’m getting calls from my members and employees saying this is a problem, we need to be better. And again, they’re doing such a great job with trying to get this mail delivered. DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines began booking flights to full capacity Wednesday, despite record surges in the novel coronavirus across the country.The airline previously announced it would start booking to full capacity last Friday."As more people continue to travel, customers may notice that flights are booked to capacity starting July 1,'' the airline said in a statement. "American will continue to notify customers and allow them to move to more open flights when available, all without incurring any cost.''American isn't the only airline doing this.United Airlines already do not block any seats. But other major U.S. airlines including Delta and Southwest leave middle seats open or limit bookings to creating space between passengers to minimize contagion. Delta is partnering with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to become the first airline to launch a contact tracing initiative for international travelers arriving in the United States.Beginning Dec. 15, the Atlanta-based carrier will ask all customers to voluntarily provide their contact information for "contact tracing and public health follow-up efforts.""This will give the CDC access to the data in moments, dramatically decreasing the time it takes to notify affected customers via local health departments," Delta said in a press release.Each passenger will need to provide their full name, both a physical and email address, as well as two phone numbers.Once a passenger fills out the form, Delta will securely forward the information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, who will pass it along to the CDC."This will give the CDC access to the data in moments, dramatically decreasing the time it takes to notify affected customers via local health departments," the company said.However, this program will not pertain to the carrier's quarantine-free flight trial to Italy, which Delta announced last week.Through a partnership with the Aeroporti de Roma and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta will have a first-of-its-kind trans-Atlantic COVID-19 testing program.Delta said that participating consumers eligible to travel would be granted an exemption from quarantine restrictions on arrival into Italy. 1448

(KGTV) — The Del Mar Fairgrounds may face increased pressure to stop the Crossroads of the West gun show from selling so-called 'ghost gun' kits at its show starting later this month.The Del Mar City Council on Monday will consider passing a resolution recommending the Del Mar Fairgrounds ask the show to prohibit its vendors from selling unregulated firearm parts, components and gun-build kids. The items do not have serial numbers and can be purchased at the show without a background check or registration.The Crossroads of the West Gun Show, which begins March 14, is likely in its final year at the state-owned fairgrounds. "These are gun parts kits that an individual can purchase and, after acquiring a serial number from the California Department of Justice, begin the process of assembling the kit," Olcott said. The Southern California ATF says untraceable guns make up 30 percent of the guns it buys undercover or are seizes. But Rose Ann Sharp, who heads the group Never Again CA, which has fought to end the Del Mar gun show, says that's not realistic."Do you think a 16-year-old is going to register the gun? Do you think a felon is going to register a gun? Do you think someone who is suicidal who is not going to pass a background check is going to register a gun? No," she said. But Danielle Jaymes, who heads sales at Poway Weapons and Gear range, said people who want to break the law will, no matter what. "If they aren't legally allowed to buy a gun in California and they go across state lines and buy an unfinished frame and then build up themselves, they're going to do it," she said.
