Welcome to Dillon, Colorado, where visitors flock to in the winter to see the magical ice castle. Surrounded by 40-foot frozen towers, visitors find themselves in a winter wonderland. The castle is filled with many gems, including caverns filled with icicles, glistening from the glimmer of sun peeking through. You can also go down one of the castle’s ice slides or make a wish at the wishing well. So, how is something like this created? We asked the creator, Annelise Nelson. "We harvest the icicles on site, and they are carefully plucked placed on top of the towers upside down,” Nelson says. “The artificial rain at night helps it grow and increase until it becomes a thick wall of ice, and they create arches, caverns and tunnels." It takes about a month to build on this acre lot. "I really love to see how excited people get," Nelson says. The magic of the ice castle can’t last forever. At the end of the season, workers use construction equipment to knock down all the ice walls. 1008
When former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was arrested on Friday on third-degree murder charges, more details emerged on how George Floyd died while in police custody on Monday. According to a report prepared by prosecutors in Hennepin County, Minnesota, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes, 46 seconds. For the final two minutes and 53 seconds, prosecutors said, Floyd was unresponsive. Police body cams showed that at 8:24:24, Floyd stopped moving. At 8:25:31, video showed that Floyd stopped talking and breathing. It was not until 8:27:24 when video showed that Chauvin removed his knee from Floyd’s neck, prosecutors said. The prosecution’s report said that “police are trained that this type of restraint with a subject in a prone position is inherently dangerous.”After Chauvin lifted his knee, Floyd was placed on a gurney and taken to the hospital, where he pronounced dead. The county medical examiner reported to prosecutors that several factors likely contributed to Floyd’s death. “The autopsy revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation,” the report read. "Mr. Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease. The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”To read the full arrest report, click 1479
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Super Tuesday’s presidential primaries across 14 states mark the first major security test since the 2018 midterms. State and local election officials say they are prepared to deal with everything from equipment problems to false information about the coronavirus. States have been racing to shore up cybersecurity defenses, replace aging and vulnerable voting equipment and train for worst-case scenarios since it became clear that Russia launched a sweeping and systematic effort to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. U.S. intelligence chiefs have warned foreign interference remains a threat for the 2020 election. And the recent outbreak of a new virus could present a bad actor with an opening to spread false information to keep voters away from the polls. 805
US President Donald Trump said he called Chinese President Xi Jinping a "king" during a state visit to Beijing in 2017 and that the Communist Party leader appeared to appreciate the remark.Speaking Tuesday at the National Republican Congressional Committee spring dinner in Washington, Trump said Xi had denied he was a king but the US leader insisted."He said, 'But I am not king, I am president.' I said 'No, you're president for life, and therefore you're king'," Trump told his audience, prompting laughter."He said, huh. He liked that. I get along with him great."Trump made his visit to China in November 2017, just months before the country's rubber-stamp legislature, the National People's Congress, removed the two-term limit on the Chinese presidency in March 2018.The move cleared the way for Xi to 822
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – The popular gay dating and social networking app Grindr says it will remove the option to filter users by ethnicity. Grindr made the announcement Monday in an Instagram post about the company’s support of the Black Lives Matter movement. “We will continue to fight racism on Grindr, both through dialogue with our community and a zero-tolerance policy for racism and hate speech on our platform,” wrote Grindr. “As part of this commitment, and based on your feedback, we have decided to remove the ethnicity filter from our next release.”The removal of the ethnicity filter comes after growing criticism from people who argue it supports racism within the LGBTQ+ community. In the Instagram post, Grindr also announced that it would make donations to the Marsha P. Johnson Institute and Black Lives Matter. The company also said its Pride Perseveres calendar would soon be announced, but Pride celebrators have the added responsibility this year to support queer people of color and the Black Lives Matter movement. This comes amid ongoing protests over the killing of George Floyd and police brutality as a whole. 1152
