TAIPEI, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Luo Qingquan, Communist Party of China (CPC) chief in central China's Hubei Province, left Taiwan Monday with a one-thousand-strong delegation after an eight-day visit to the island, expressing confidence in the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."The visit was very smooth and fruitful... I'm expecting Hubei and Taiwan to carry out more exchanges and boost cooperation," Luo said as he departed the island.Luo's delegation arrived here on April 19 for a Hubei-Taiwan cultural festival filled with exhibitions, forums and performances featuring Hubei culture.Luo said the two regions reached a consensus on exchange and cooperation in economic, scientific, technological and cultural fields.He noted Taiwan's advanced farm-products processing technology could be well applied in Hubei, a province rich in agriculture.During the trip, the delegation also visited medium- and small-sized companies, farm and schools in Taipei, Taichung, Yunlin and Hsinchu.The Hubei-Taiwan festival has been held in Hubei's capital Wuhan six times since 2004. It was the first time the event was held on the island.The Chinese mainland and Taiwan have been recently intensifying their exchanges, especially high-level visits to the island by mainland delegations, which is seen as a sign of increasingly solid relations.Earlier this month, a municipal government delegation of about 260 people headed by Shanghai mayor Han Zheng visited the island to promote the upcoming Shanghai World Expo.During the trip, several Shanghai companies and Taiwanese counterparts signed 28 agreements on long-term exchanges and short-term purchases, along with agreements on investments in finance, chemical materials, steel, tourism, intellectual property rights and farm products, among others.

WASHINGTON, April 12 (Xinhua) -- China hopes various parties will continue to step up diplomatic efforts and actively seek effective ways to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations, Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Monday.During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, Hu also said China and the United States share the same overall goal on the Iranian nuclear issue.Hu said China stands ready to maintain consultation and coordination with the United States and other parties within the 5-plus-1 mechanism, which includes the permanent UN Security Council members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States and Germany, and in the United Nations and through other channels.Hu stated China's principled position on the Iranian nuclear issue, saying China is always committed to upholding the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and peace and stability in the Middle East.

BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday called for more efforts to cut emissions and conserve energy to meet the country's target set by the 11th Five-Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.The task of fulfilling the goal was still tough , Wen said at a State Council meeting, adding that this year would be particularly difficult as the first quarter had already seen rising energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) in the major industrial sectors.In the first three months, six major industries, including steel, power and non-ferrous, saw a 3.2 percent growth in energy consumption per unit of GDP, Wen said.  Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) addresses a State Council meeting of conserving energy and cutting emissions in Beijing, China, on May 5, 2010. YUSHU, Qinghai, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province has risen to 760, rescuers said Friday.The latest statistics show that 243 people were missing and 11,477 injured, 1,174 severely, said a spokesman with the rescue headquarters in in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in southern Qinghai.A total of 4,200 injured people have been discharged from hospital, he added.Rescuers search for survivors at a collapsed building in Gyegu Town of Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, northwest China's Qinghai Province, April 15, 2010. At least 7,093 rescuers were carrying out search and rescue operation in the Gyegu Town, the seat of the Yushu prefecture government, according to previous statements from the headquarters.More rescuers were en route to the town that is close to the epicenter and home to 100,000 residentsThe quake struck the Yushu County in the Yushu prefecture at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday with a depth of about 33 km. The epicenter was calculated to be 33.1 north and 96.7 east, the China Earthquake Networks Center reported.A series of aftershocks have been reported so far, with the biggest being at 6.3 magnitude.The epicenter is at the Rima Village in the Shanglaxiu Township, a pasturing and sparsely-populated area about 50 km west of Gyegu and about 800 km away from the provincial capital Xining.Many people are still buried in the debris as more than 85 percent of houses in Gyegu, mostly made of mudbrick and wood, had collapsed.
