OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A parade of cars and motorcycles circled around a Jewish community center's parking lot on Sunday for a World War II veteran's centennial birthday celebration."Why is everybody here today? Well, you better ask them (family members)," said Mike Katzman, who turned 100 years old on Monday. "I think it's because I am so good looking."While he might have been joking, he was there for a reason."I am one of the luckiest guys in the world to hit 100," Katzman said.He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and served as a specialist in Texas and five other bases and schools throughout the United States. His family wanted to throw him a party at the community center, where he loves to workout, but the COVID-19 pandemic struck.Instead, he had a parade of family, friends and fellow veterans who drove by to say, "happy birthday."He has a few secrets to living this long: working out, giving to others and his special diet from when he was a child."My special diet was bologna. I grew up with bologna," Katzman said.He didn't get a big party, but the veteran said being alive and able to continue his passion for helping veterans every day makes him happy he's turning 100.This story was originally published by Jordan Betts at KSHB. 1261

PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- After Larry McNamer received a cease-and-desist letter from San Diego County officials, during the first week purple tier restrictions went into place, he said he will not back down."This is what courts are for. I'll fight it, I will fight it," the owner of Major’s Diner in Pine Valley said.In the letter, county officials noted he could face up to a ,000 fine for every violation under the state's guidelines, which includes not allowing guests inside."It could be ,000. I don't care because I can't afford to pay it, so I couldn't pay it if I had to,” McNamer told ABC 10News.McNamer said it all boils down to survival of this business and what he thinks is right in an uphill battle with the county and the state."They're going to have be a lot more fair about doling this out and understand that we zero cases up here [in Pine Valley],” he said.Even as he continues to serve up hot plates inside, McNamer said nothing changes when it comes to safety measures given by the state. He said guests are sat apart inside and have the option of dining outdoors if they choose.ABC 10News caught up with a couple from Alpine who grabbed a bite to eat Friday morning, not because Major's was the only diner open but they wanted to support him after seeing him on ABC 10News newscasts."We saw they were in trouble and in need of assistance, so we came to support them,” the supporter, Mark, said.ABC 10News asked Mark and his wife if they thought customers supporting restaurants who defy public health orders are contributing to the problem of COVID-19 cases rates surging, as restrictions continue to grow."Show me the data that these are sources of community spread because the data I see doesn't show that,” Mark said.McNamer said he's been receiving postcards and letters from people across the county supporting his choice of staying open to survive."It empowers you, it lets you know you're doing the right thing,” he said. 1967

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six correctional officers and two inmates at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility were hospitalized Sunday after officials said a group of prisoners attacked the officers in a recreation yard. The incident was reported at the prison just before 4 p.m., according to the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. About 20 inmates were in the facility's recreation yard when some began to attack the officers. The six officers suffered stab wounds, lacerations, and possible broken bones and were taken to a nearby hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known. Two inmates were also taken to outside hospitals for treatment. Other inmates involved were taken to the prison's medical facility for treatment.Officials are not sure how many inmates were involved in the attack, but say that they ignored commands to stop, forcing less-lethal measures to be used. A warning shot was fired and additional officers responded to the yard.Several weapons were reportedly recovered at the scene. The four suspects were identified as Joe Mendez, 39, Luis Delgado, 24, Michael Figueroa, 20, and William Barba, 41. Those involved could also face charges of attempted murder of a peace officer.Nearly one year ago, five inmates were injured in a riot involving about 80 inmates at the prison. Prior to that, three inmates suffered stab wounds in a seven-on-one fight in the facility in April 2019. In February 2019, a fight between 50 inmates left at least 10 prisoners injured.According to the prison's reports online, 204 use of force incidents were reported in 2019. In its quarterly reports through March 2020, the last posted report, the prison had not reported any use of force incidents.Donovan State Prison houses about 3,624 minimum-, medium-, and maximum-security inmates. 1825

PARSIPPANY-TROY HILLS, N.J. – The smiling Black chef that’s been on Cream of Wheat packaging for decades is being removed. In a statement obtained by USA Today and The New York Times, B&G Foods said that research indicates the image of the Black man may be based on an actual Chicago chef named Frank White, but it’s being removed because “it reminds some consumers of earlier depictions they find offensive.”The removal comes after the company initiated a review of the packaging in June. At that time, the business wrote that it’s committed to evaluating its packaging and would take steps to ensure it does not inadvertently contribute to racism."B&G Foods unequivocally stands against prejudice and injustice of any kind," wrote the company. It’s not immediately clear when customers can expect the Cream of Wheat packaging to be changed. The Times reports that the character on the box was once named “Rastus,” a pejorative term for Black men, and that he was once depicted as a barely literate cook who didn’t know what vitamins were.Cream of Wheat is the latest of several products which are being redesigned to remove racially insensitive imagery.Earlier this month, it was announced that Uncle Ben’s rice products would be renamed Ben’s Original and the image of Uncle Ben would be removed. In June, Quaker Oats said it would rename and rebrand Aunt Jemima pancake syrup. Additionally, the Mrs. Butterworth brand is being reevaluated. These changes are part of a ripple effect from the Black Lives Matter movement, which picked up steam following the police killings of Black men and women, including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. 1654

PHOENIX — Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego says one area hospital is nearing capacity in its morgue and may be requesting refrigerated trucks. The morgue at the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office is also reportedly near capacity.Gallego said Friday morning that officials are looking at an option to prevent problems at the Phoenix-area Abrazo Health Hospital."It's specific just to one area…this is not a statewide problem," Gallego said. "Maricopa County... is looking at everything they can do."Abrazo Health later issued a statement saying that they have "adequate" morgue space, but are taking "proactive" steps to ensure they have overflow morgue space if needed.Gallego added that "we are losing too many Arizonans." She also urged Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey to require mask usage throughout the state.Gallego's office released an additional statement Friday, detailing information from the city's meetings with the "Maricopa County Unified Command Center."The command center team shared that the Maricopa Office of the Medical Examiner is at 96% capacity and is working to "secure a contract for refrigerator trucks.""I'm heartbroken...it's been a rough week for me," Gallego said, citing that the White House officials have said everything is under control and that she has been asking for too much support amid the fight against coronavirus.Gallego also mentioned that Phoenix is hoping to receive federal testing support by July 16.This story was originally published by Ashley Loose on KNXV in Phoenix. 1520
