SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local leaders say it's going to cost millions of dollars to prevent toxic waste from flowing into the Tijuana River Valley, but it's a bill they are willing to pay. Dozens of local leaders and federal agencies came together this morning with a common goal, to prevent the massive amounts of sewage from flowing into our San Diego County beaches. "427 million gallons of sewage has hit our water and our beaches just this year alone," says Port of San Diego Commissioner, Dan Malcolm. During today's meeting, leaders were given possible solutions on how to tackle the problem. "To divert sewage and wastewater flow away from the Tijuana River Valleys, so that it can either be treated or diverted to outflow pumps, that would pump the water far out in the Pacific Ocean," says Mayor of Coronado Richard Bailey. The costs are estimated up to 0 million. Local leaders say sewage isn't the only contaminate in the water. A chemical test was done that showed things like herbicides, arsenic, and lead are also flowing into the sea. "The time of talk is over," says Serge Dedina, Mayor of Imperial Beach. "The time of actually doing things and preventing sewage and toxic waste from reaching our beach is now."Local leaders say the next plan of action is to ask Congress for help with funding. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Mayor Serge Dedina will be visiting Mexico over the next few days to talk about solutions to the waste in the Tijuana River Valley. 1475

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you're single in San Diego, chances are you're not impressed by the dating field locally. At least according to Apartment List, which ranked 130 cities on their ability to provide singles with the best atmosphere. San Diego is, well, lukewarm according to the study. The city ranked 73 overall, right in the middle of the park and posting an overall score of 48 out of 100 possible points.RELATED: Love hurts: Price of a date in San Diego could cost you, study saysThe study ranked cities on their dating satisfaction, social satisfaction, dating affordability, and percentage of reported singles, using data from Apartment List’s Annual Renter Satisfaction Survey and Census Bureau American Community Survey 2017.When it broke down that way, only about 22% of respondents were satisfied with the dating in San Diego. How women and men feel about dating locally may give us an idea about why the city ranked where it did. About 17% of women and 35% of men were satisfied with dating here.Far more San Diegans, about 58%, were satisfied with their social lives in town. And looking at census data, the city posted a measly 22 out of 100 for percentage of singles.RELATED: Ideas for a first date in San DiegoAccording to Apartment List, San Diego's lacking singles population and low satisfaction rate with dating here don't make it an inviting city for singles. The price of dating in California is also abysmal. But social lives are thriving.Atlanta ranked as the best city for singles, followed by Madison, Wisc.; Washington, D.C.; Bloomington, Ind.; and New Orleans, La. Heading up the bottom of the list was a handful of California cities: San Bernardino, Calif.; Bakersfield, Calif.; Anaheim, Calif.; Fayetteville, N.C.; and lastly Stockton, Calif. 1779

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mission Valley's Gordon Biersch restaurant may be closing, but the brewery location will live on under a new local eatery.Puesto will take over the location of the well-known restaurant after it closes in July, according to the company. The Mission Center Road spot will be the Mexican restaurant's third location.Gordon Biersch is set to leave Mission Valley on July 16, though no reason was immediately given for the closure, according to paperwork filed by the company. RELATED: Uber Eats to test drone delivery service in San DiegoPuesto will reopen the on-site brewery and try to retain as many of Gordon Biersch's staff as possible. The new restaurant plans to open in Fall 2019.The on-site brewery will give Puesto the opportunity to develop their own beer program, after collaborations with San Diego and Mexico breweries for years, in addition to its signature margaritas and cocktails.“The Puesto team has been doing cervecería collaborations for years now, working primarily with cervecerías in Mexico to create our own San Diego meets Mexico cervezas," Puesto co-owner Eric Adler said. "We’ve been looking for a space in San Diego for some time where we could develop our own cerveza program. This new space gives us the opportunity not only to brew, but continue bringing our innovative approach to authentic Mexican flavors to more of our hometown.”Puesto currently operates six restaurants around California, offering a variety of handmade tacos, bowls, and street food-style plates. 1525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s almost time to welcome back the nail-biting excitement of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.This year’s countywide bee will be held on March 15 at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station.Roughly 100 spellers are expected to take the stage, making competition fierce.Last year was an exciting year for the competition as it saw its youngest speller ever, Edith Fuller of Oklahoma, who was only 5-years-old when she qualified.Fuller went all the way to the national stage. The spelling bee has been around for more than nine decades. The bee was founded in 1925 and has been held every year since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.In 2017, the competition celebrated its 90th National Spelling Bee.2017’s winning word was marocain, which is “a ribbed crepe fabric used in women's clothing.”The Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin May 29 and end on May 31.  943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- If you've ever gone out in the Gaslamp, you know how busy it can get. Nothing will ruin your night more than finding out your car's been towed. That's exactly what's happened more than 1,000 times since the city converted Fifth Avenue to a three-minute passenger loading zone after 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights in September 2016. "They really don't ask questions around here," said Vanessa Figueroa, who hands out fliers for Gaslamp BBQ on the corner of 5th and Island every Friday and Saturday nights. "If you're parked here, your car's gone."The city made the change to reduce gridlock, boost emergency response times, and make passenger drop-offs safer. But that's also meant a lot of towing. In the first year, the city towed about 1,200 cars - drivers either missing the warning signs or getting confused by different ones next to each other.RELATED:  906
