Today would be a normal drive to work for Amelia Caceres — except her house is surrounded by police tape. Adrian Perez helped her get out, both still in shock after hearing the brand new bridge outside their home collapsed."We were some of the first people on the front,” Caceres said. “And we saw the cars crushed underneath it was really horrifying, so it was really scary.”“My mind just does not captivate that that happened,” Perez said.Caceres and Perez saw the scene unfold, in disbelief. “It’s kind of like surreal,” Perez said. “Like it was a movie. There was a woman — I guess that she was trapped in the car like under the car .. she was crying hysterically. It was just really strange.”What made it even more strange for these two is that they had just watched the bridge go up days before.“It was just up. It was done,” Caceras said. “And it seemed almost like it was amazing that they had done it so quickly.”The bridge was designed to provide a safe way for students at Florida International University, like Perez, to cross a busy highway."I was really excited about this bridge because I was like finally I won’t have to go through the death trap that is eighth street crossing," Perez said. "Now, that’s kind of ironic."Carlos Devarona lives less than a mile away, and travels the street every day.“You have a blind faith in construction,” Devarona said. “You never think something like this is going to happen.”Watching the scene left him with even more questions, specifically why officials chose to perform a stress test in the moments before the collapse. “Not above live traffic  — you don’t do that,” Devarona said. “It just should never happen.”As investigators work to answer the many questions surrounding the collapse, Perez and Caceras, like so many others, wait for answers.“I’m sure that they did what was needed to get done,” Perez said. “I don’t think anyone would do something like this purposefully. Or negligently. I guess we will see.” 2034

There are new concerns about people's ability to understand information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.Dartmouth College researchers found many health agencies are publishing coronavirus information at a 10th grade reading level. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health say information should not be published at more than an 8th grade reading level.Researchers say it could lead to more people missing information.“If high quality information, in terms of content, like with the CDC, WHO and other official organizations put out, if that is difficult to access, difficult to understand, then that does create a potential or an incentive for looking at less trustworthy sources,” said Joseph Dexter, Neukom Fellow at Dartmouth College.Researchers say health agencies need to use short and direct sentences when writing health information. They should also use short paragraphs, avoiding jargon and technical terms. It's also important to think about how information can be presented visually on a screen.Right now, it's not required that states follow these guidelines, but it is highly recommended. 1192

There’s a new resource for parents who’ve found themselves struggling to teach their children while maintaining a job.“We're stepping into this role that we have no experience,” said Amy Lundy, co-founder of The Learning Match. “And as far as education is concerned, they're teaching subjects in a way that we didn't even learn them as children.”Lundy found herself trying to juggle schooling three children from home and keeping her business running through the pandemic. Quickly, she started looking for help with the schooling aspect.“I realized this is a service I needed in my own family. What I was finding was I was connecting with a lot of teachers that friends were using. Their schedules were very filled. I couldn't get them when I needed them. I was going on a Facebook groups. I was having a very hard time navigating and finding people that fit the qualifications,” said Lundy. That's how TheLearningMatch.com was born. It's a website that's like a matchmaking service. It connects people studying education or retired teachers, really anyone with an educational background, to families that need help. The educator may just be there for accountability to make sure the child is doing and understanding assignments. Or they could play a more involved role.“And then there's more sort of part-time or full-time experiences where this person is coming inside your home or is on the computer several hours a day, or all day with your child, fulfilling those requirements that you have based on what your child's grade is,” said Lundy. Its free to sign up on The Learning Match. The site leaves it to families and the educators to work out how involved and how much their services will cost. 1706

TORONTO (AP) — The United States has agreed with Canada and Mexico to extend their agreement to keep their border closed to non-essential travel to July 21 during the coronavirus pandemic. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday's agreement extends the closure by another 30 days. "This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe,” the prime minister said in his daily press conference. Americans who are returning to the U.S. and Canadians who are returning to Canada are exempted from the border closure.Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf issued a statement Tuesday on why extending non-essential travel restrictions with Canada and Mexico was necessary. "The Department of Homeland Security will ensure that the measures taken at our borders will protect America from all threats, including threats against the health and safety of our citizens," Wolf said in the statement. "Based on the success of the existing restrictions and the emergence of additional global COVID-19 hotspots, the Department will continue to limit non-essential travel at our land ports of entry with Canada and Mexico. This extension protects Americans while keeping essential trade and travel flowing as we reopen the American economy. The Department of Homeland Security is in close contact with our Canadian and Mexican counterparts regarding this extension, and they agree on the need to extend their non-essential travel restrictions as well. I look forward to continuing to work with our neighbors to maintain essential trade and travel while protecting the health of our respective citizenry." The Mexican Embassy in the United States said in a series of tweets that the decision came "after reviewing the development of the spread of COVID-19 in both countries." 1829
