CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Laurence and Cherryl Lector's two small children were eager to show off their costumes and hit up their neighborhood for sweets. But the couple didn't want to abandon their home on Baywood Circle in Chula Vista and disappoint the several trick-or-treaters likely to stop by for confectionery.So, the couple filled a large candy bowl hoping their security camera -- fixed visibly in their porch -- would keep visitors honest.  The family then set off on their haunts.The Lectors phones were buzzing with video alerts showing little ghosts and ghouls digging through the self-serve candy bowl and respecting the Halloween honor system.Then they received a video showing an esurient group of older kids, and one small girl, emptying out the dish into their bags."I was devastated someone could just get all the candy and ruin the night [for other trick-or-treaters]," said Laurence Lector.One of the kids noticed the camera and even pointed it out to someone else in the group, but the kids continued to snatch all of the treats until every sweet was gone."We were disappointed that those that came afterward came to an empty bowl," Cherryl Castro-Lector told said.About an hour later, they received a video from their camera that warmed their hearts.The video shows a girl and boy investigating the empty bowl.  They must've known that the night wasn't over for other little trick-or-treaters. So, the group took turns emptying their own their treats into the bowl, starting with their mom."I got a little teary eyed.  Gosh, I hope my kids are like that someday," Castro-Lector said. "I would have hugged those little kids and mom if I were there."The Lectors are eager to find these children and their parents to say thanks.  "I would love to meet them and thank them for being so kind. Not just for me but everybody that followed and enjoyed Halloween, as they should," Castro-Lector said. 1969

(KGTV) — A Chula Vista homeowner encountered an intruder as she was getting dressed in her bedroom, before giving chase.Russell Buckley was alerted to his Ring doorbell video around 6:45 a.m. Friday. A person in a red hoodie was lurking near the front door of his home off Otay Lakes Road, while Buckley was out of town on business."Tried to text my wife to let her know someone was in front of my house," said Buckley.About 25 minutes later, he got another alert. The video showed his wife screaming, as she chased that same man across their lawn."Absolute panic," said Buckley.He phoned his wife Victoria and learned what happened. She was in her bedroom getting dressed while their housekeeper was working in the house. His wife had just put on her shoes when the door opened. A young man with a red hoodie walked in. "She screamed. He screamed and turned around and ran back down the stairs," said Buckley.As he ran, her fear turned into rage."How dare you come into my home ... She has a protective instinct," said Buckley.His petite, 52-year-old wife - all of five feet tall - gave chase."From what I'm told, he dove across the counter and out the window," said Buckley.Buckley showed us a shattered kitchen window, which he says was both the entry and exit point. He says his wife ran out the front door and sprinted toward the intruder, screaming."At one point, she's able to grab him," said Buckley.She tugged at a pillowcase he was holding, stuffed with her daughter's jewelry, but the man got away and into a getaway car - a silver sedan. Buckley is grateful his wife was not hurt, fand still shaking his head over her leap into action."Told her it wasn't the wisest decision, but I'm very proud of her. It was a fight or flight instinct, and more of a fight for her," said Buckley. Buckley says among the items stolen: a gold Chilean communion medallion in his wife's family for more than a century. Police told the Buckleys four young men were recorded in the neighborhood stealing license plates right before the break-in. China's north plain, one of the most densely populated regions on Earth, is set to become the world's deadliest heat wave zone by the end of the century, scientists say.New scientific research suggests that unless there are heavy cuts in carbon emissions, climate change will lead to humid heat waves that could push the area "against the boundaries of habitability" by 2070.The results of the study of China's northern plain, which includes the capital Beijing, are particularly worrying because many of the region's 400 million people are farmers exposed to climactic conditions.The study said that heat and high humidity can create conditions that kill even healthy people within six hours of being outside."This spot is going to be the hottest spot for deadly heatwaves in the future," said Professor Elfatih Eltahir, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who led the new study."China is currently the largest contributor to the emissions of greenhouse gases, with potentially serious implications to its own population," said Eltahir, who specializes in hydrology and climate science."Continuation of current global emissions may limit the habitability of the most populous region of the most populous country on Earth," said Eltahir. 1261

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (CNS) - The family of a 56-year-old man who died earlier this year following an encounter with Chula Vista police announced Monday they are filing a pair of wrongful death lawsuits against the city.The lawsuits seek the names of the officers involved in the March 13 call for service that culminated in Oral Nunis' death.Both lawsuits are being filed in San Diego federal and state courts on behalf of four of Nunis' children, including his daughter Kimone, who called 911 shortly after midnight March 13 after her father began experiencing a mental health issue and attempted to jump out of a second-story window.While addressing reporters at a news conference announcing the lawsuits, Kimone Nunis said responding officers did not speak to her or ask her what was happening with her father when they arrived."That night, I just wanted help. I picked up the phone. I didn't know what I was getting myself into," she said.Attorneys for the family say officers tackled Nunis outside the home and "dogpiled" atop him, placed him in a WRAP restraint device and put a "spit hood" over his head.In a statement released shortly after Nunis' death, the police department said he was restrained to prevent him from hurting himself or others. The department also alleged Nunis was "uncooperative with officers and struggled as they attempted to detain him," resulting in injuries to two of the officers.The federal lawsuit alleges Nunis was unconscious and unresponsive after the altercation, and that those restraints were placed upon him while he was unconscious.Nunis was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.Attorney John Burris, who represents the family, said police should have responded by de-escalating the situation."Mr. Nunis was seeking help. The family was seeking help. But instead of getting help, he was met with force," Burris said.A similar lawsuit was filed last month on behalf of Nunis' widow and three other children. Their attorney, Carl Douglas, alleged the city has withheld Nunis' cause of death, while a statement released by the city last month indicated his cause of death has not yet been determined."The City of Chula Vista understands and shares the public's and the family's desire to have all of their questions answered about this incident. However, it is premature and inappropriate to come to any conclusions at this time," according to the city's statement in response to that lawsuit. "The investigation is ongoing, and the true cause of death has not been determined by the Medical Examiner. Because of this, and now the threat of litigation, the City and the Police Department must refrain from commenting further beyond the statements already made. The City and Police Department continue to express our deepest condolences to the family and all of those touched by Mr. Nunis' tragic passing."City officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the latest filings.In addition to the federal lawsuit alleging wrongful death and violations of Nunis' civil rights, the state lawsuit seeks the release of the officers' names.The complaint states Kimone Nunis submitted a California Public Records Act request in July seeking the names of the involved officers, as well as body camera footage, reports and statements from witnesses and other information police have regarding the case.According to the lawsuit, which alleges the city violated the CPRA, the family was told months later that the information was being withheld "because of ongoing criminal and administrative investigations." 3591
