A Las Vegas police officer "accidentally" fired his gun in the Mandalay Bay suite where mass shooter Stephen Paddock fired into a crowd at a music festival on Oct. 1.This is according to the sheriff for Las Vegas. He said the officer was not shooting at anything and it did not happen in the same area where Paddock's body was discovered.The sheriff also said that the 32nd floor where the suite is located did not have security cameras facing the gunman's suite or the stairwell.The sheriff spoke to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.In the shooting, 58 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. A Colorado man is changing the next chapter of history by helping his local library buy more books about Black history and cultural diversity.Kevin Gebert retired from the aerospace industry six years ago and started a nonprofit for minority children, but when COVID-19 shut down schools, he found himself with extra time. He used the spare time to read "The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration" by Isabel Wilkerson. It's a book filled with lessons on Black history."I read this book and by the time I got a quarter of the way through it, I thought about the impact this book could have on school kids, adults," Gebert said.His curiosity took him to the Louisville Public Library, where he discovered the book selection on race and cultural diversity was slim. Gebert said the library only had one copy of "The Warmth of Other Suns," and 16 people were on a wait list."It will probably be into next year before everyone has had a chance to read it," he said.He launched a fundraiser with the library to expand the collection of culturally diverse books, books about Black history, race and equality.With the help of friends, Gebert compiled a list of 20 books to add to the library collection."(Library staff) are going to go through the list of books that were recommended and they will make the decision as to how many they buy," he said. A group of California lawmakers is raising new questions about what the state is getting in return for the billions of dollars it has spent combating its homeless crisis.The seven lawmakers, all Republicans, are calling for an audit that will need bipartisan support to get going. In the last two years, California has invested .7 billion on homelessness, and Gov. Gavin Newsom is budgeting an additional .4 billion in next year's budget. Meanwhile, the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development says California's homeless population increased by 16 percent last year, or 21,306 people. "I don't know where that money is going, and it's being approved by the legislature," said State Sen. Brian Jones, Republican of San Diego County's 38th district, who is calling for the audit. "So if I don't know where it's going, how can the taxpayers know where it's going?"Newsom's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Last week, Newsom unveiled a proposal for .4 billion to overhaul medi-cal and create a new fund that would serve in part to help people on the brink of homelessness make rent. San Diego homeless advocate Michael McConnell, who is not a member of a political party, said he has been asking many of the questions those seeking the audit are raising. "We know the big buckets that the money just kind of disappears into, but what we don't do is we don't follow it all the way through to see how many folks were actually getting out of homelessness," he said. The state's Joint Legislative Audit Committee, comprised mostly of Democrats, will consider the audit request at its Feb. 19 meeting.
