Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on Tuesday that he will celebrate his 80th birthday virtually through a Zoom call.Fauci turns 80 on Thursday, and has been working long hours as the federal government’s leading infectious disease expert amid the coronavirus pandemic. In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Fauci said he normally spends his birthday with his daughters.With the coronavirus pandemic still spreading through the US, Fauci will only be spending the milestone in person with his wife.Fauci’s birthday comes one day before Christmas. He is following the type of advice he has been giving to Americans amid the holidays. The US is averaging more than 2,500 coronavirus-related deaths and is still battling a surge spurred by Thanksgiving gatherings.“I am going to practice what I am preaching to my fellow Americans in this country,” Fauci told Blitzer. “I am going to do something that is quite modified from what I had done traditionally. I am going to have a quiet dinner in my home with my wife. I would love to have my three daughters who are on different parts of the country, different states that would have to fly in for the most part. We are going to do a Zoom together. (KGTV) - A grieving dog owner says a routine surgery turned deadly after his dog suffered burns during a brief stay.In early May, John San Filippo brought 11-year-old Sofia, a Boxer mix, to the Bastet Veterinary Hospital for knee surgery."Dropped her off in the morning and picked up her up in the afternoon. She was doing great," said San Filippo.Six days after the surgery, San Filippo found several oozing sores on her right side. The vet told him the electric blanket used to warm Sofia had somehow burned her. "I was stunned, but at that point, it was just three little spots," said San Filippo.Within weeks, the full extent of the burns emerged: 3rd- and 4th-degree burns on over 40% of her body. Sofia developed sepsis and pneumonia, before she died in early June."Just broke down crying ... brought her in for knee surgery and my dog was barbecued," said San Filippo. San Filippo has filed a complaint with the State Veterinary Medical Board and wants the business shut down.Bastet Veterinary Hospital released the following statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sofia, which was a result of thermal burns derived from the malfunction of our patient warming system. We are committed to working with all involved parties to help recoup financial losses, and our hearts grieve along with Sofia'a family for their loss."Experts suggest asking your veterinarian about how they warm animals during anesthesia. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A standoff in El Cajon ended Thursday afternoon after a man barricaded himself inside an apartment. According to police, the incident began unfolding before 1 p.m. near the intersection of Jamacha Road and Dorothy Street. Police told 10News the standoff was sparked due to a domestic incident at The Grove apartments.Police could be seen blocking off the street as officers stood near their patrol cars in the rain. Neighbors watched in awe from across the street."We heard the cops say that he made a comment saying he was going to burn the apartment down," said Christina Messenger. The man shattered the glass of the windows several times from the inside the first floor unit. At one point, he poked his head out to yell at officers. "You just don’t know whats going on in there," said Sherry Quijada. "You don’t know whether hes gonna pull a gun out and start shooting. You don’t know what someone like that is capable of."Eventually, a K9 officer was sent in, ending the hours-long standoff.
