(KGTV) — Saturday, President Donald Trump signed a law approving the use of 9-8-8 as the universal telephone number to reach the National Suicide Prevention Hotline starting in 2022.The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, which was passed by the U.S. House in September after being approved by the Senate and Federal Communications Commission, will allow individuals to dial the three digits 9-8-8 as opposed to the previous 10-digit hotline number, which is currently 1-800-273-8255 (TALK), CNN reported. The new number will take effect in July 2022.The bill allows states to collect fees aimed at ensuring local crisis centers can support increased volume and directs federal health agencies to submit a report to Congress on strategies to improve support services for LGBTQ youth, minorities, and individuals in rural counties, who are at a higher risk for suicide. In 2019, the FCC estimated that the costs of implementing a three-digit hotline for the first year would be about 0 million and 5 million in the second year, which includes costs for call-center capacity and public awareness campaign. The agency stressed, however, that the "benefits of this action are quite likely to outweigh the costs."The new number will not come with a texting option, but the FCC said in July it will look into the capability for that if it becomes available.Anyone who needs help now can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) and text "HOME" to 741741 for the crisis line. Crisis support in Spanish is available at 1-888-628-9454.CNN contributed to this report. 1605

(KGTV) — Universal Pictures has decided not to release its upcoming movie, "The Hunt," following two recent mass shootings and backlash over its plot. The R-rated film, starring Hilary Swank, Betty Gilpin and Emma Roberts, depicts a group of wealthy elites hunting humans for sport. Last week, Universal faced backlash for airing ads for the film following recent mass shootings in Texas, California, and Ohio that left more than 30 people dead. The film's website now shows a statement from Universal, reading: "While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for the hunt, after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film. We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film."Before the film's pending release, "The Hunt" had already received its share of criticism.Though he didn't name the film directly, a day prior the Universal's decision President Trump weighed in on Twitter, saying, "Liberal Hollywood is racist at the highest level, and with great anger and hate." 1237

(KGTV) --There is another effort to tackle our housing problems in California in the form of Proposition 21.Prop. 21, also known as the Rental Affordability Act, would allow local governments to have more authority over rent control on residential properties over 15 years old.It would exempt individuals who own two homes or less from new rent-control policies.Kimberly Ellis has been renting her current Santee apartment for three years. With rent—plus bills and food—she said everything “is just so expensive.”With her husband facing medical issues and her rent increasing every year, she said rent control is needed. “I live on a budget. It’s hard when the rent goes up,” Ellis said.A television ad for Yes on 21 is sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. The organization has committed major funding to the cause.Pt. Loma Nazarene University’s Chief Economist Lynn Reaser said the advertisement “doesn’t even tell us what Proposition 21 even does.”She clarified it for voters.“It allows local governments to set their own rent control measures that would be different from what the state now has, which basically caps rent increases at 5 percent plus rate of inflation,” Reaser said. She said the ad got two facts right—homelessness is increasing and unemployment is high.According to the California Employment Development Department, unemployment is more than 13 percent. While it is lower than the record from the start of this pandemic, it is still above the mark set in 2010 during the great recession. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation launched a similar rent control ballot measure a couple years ago, which failed.According to the Legislative Analyst’s Office, it is likely state and local entities will lose money if Prop. 21 passes. The report said it could be in the “high tens of millions of dollars per year over time.”“Depending on actions by local communities, revenue losses could be less or more,” the ballot analysis said. 1953

.@GoyaFoods has been a staple of so many Latino households for generations. Now their CEO, Bob Unanue, is praising a president who villainizes and maliciously attacks Latinos for political gain. Americans should think twice before buying their products. #Goyaway https://t.co/lZDQlK6TcU— Julián Castro (@JulianCastro) July 9, 2020 337
