Nearly 15,000 jobs are at stake as General Motors has announced it may be closing as many as five factories. The company said it will close the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant in Detroit and Warren Transmission Operations in Warren. Other plans closing include the Oshawa Assembly Plant in Oshawa, Ontario, the Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio and the Baltimore Operations in White Marsh, Maryland, WXYZ television station reports. The moves are the first big steps in the century-old GM's transformation. It is closing facilities and reinvesting money away from cars that once dominated roadways and to technology that the company believes will power its future."These actions will increase the long-term profit and cash generation potential of the company and improve resilience through the cycle," CEO Mary Barra said.GM is preparing for the next economic downturn and potential tariffs on auto imports. It will reduce its salaried workforce by 15 percent, including a quarter of the company's executives.A plant in Canada that is closing will eliminate 2,500 jobs. The Canada plant set to close as part of the global restructuring is in Oshawa, Ontario, where it has been open since 1953. The private sector union Unifor said it has been informed there is no product allocated for the plant past December 2019.The union will meet with GM leaders later today. The company's plant closures have been expected due to struggling automobile sales. Layoffs in the United States will affect factory and white-collar workers, The Washington Post reports. 1588

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Cal Fire and Riverside County Fire crews responded Friday to a wildfire threatening utility infrastructure in Moreno Valley. The first firefighters to reach the scene along Gilman Springs Road reported four spot fires approximately one mile apart and one acre each, Cal Fire tweeted. Within an hour, the so-called Jerry Fire spread to 500 acres with a rapid rate of spread and no containment.Multiple structures were threatened, said officials. Aerial video from the scene showed at least one structure engulfed in flames. Approximately 15 homes on Gilman Springs Road between Highway 60 and Jack Rabbit Trail were evacuated. There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire. About 3:30 p.m., winds in the area are 8 miles per hour and the temperatures are in the low 70s, according to 10News meterologist Angelica Campos. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live next to the 8th hole at the National City Golf Course are fed up with damage from errant tee shots."It's a huge problem," says Karen Hovik. She says golf balls have broken three windshields on her car and left countless dents and scratches."I watch people, and they try to swing like Happy Gilmore while they're filming it," she says, noting that golfers take aggressive swings and don't seem to care where their ball lands.A chain link fence lines the property between the golf course and the condo complex. Hovik and her neighbors want the city or the course management company to put up tall nets, similar to the ones near the driving range."It's not just property damage," says Hovik. "Somebody could get really hurt and injured by that." Hovik says she's been hit by golf balls several times while walking near her home.A representative from the golf course told 10News they take the issue very seriously, and they've posted signs along the course telling the golfers they are responsible for any damage done by bad shots. They also say they plan a full safety review of the course this year, and that's one issue that will be addressed.Representatives from the National City Parks and Recreation Department have not returned our calls for comment. 1308

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — A Milwaukee County Supervisor has issued an apology after he used a song by rapper Cardi B to promote a weatherization program.Supervisor Ryan Clancy apologized and stated that his Facebook post "landed badly" after he used a photo of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion from the music video for the song"WAP" to promote the Weatherization Assistance Program.According to the Milwaukee County website, the program provides qualified Milwaukee County residents with a one-time annual payment toward heating and electric bills. The song includes the line "there's some wh**es in this house." In text overlaid on the still from the music video, Clancy wrote, "there's some holes in this house," referencing the need to weatherize homes before it gets too cold.Clancy made another connection to the song by abbreviating the Weatherization Assistance Program as "WAP."Following the post from Clancy, the weatherization program asked Clancy to take down his post because it didn't read well to some viewers.Clancy did just that and posted a comment on top of the original post, and deleted the photo.Clancy said he initially used the photo in an effort to "draw attention to both this excellent program and to a song which has at its core a message about empowerment, reclaiming and destigmatization." 1317
