RICHMOND, Va. — There has been a major drop in the number of people behind bars in the U.S. An analysis by The Marshall Project and The Associated Press found that between March and June, more than 100,000 people were released from state and federal prisons. That's a drop of 8%. By comparison, the Vera Institute of Justice found that for all of 2019, the state and federal prison population fell by 2.2%. As the U.S. struggles with the coronavirus, prison reform advocates are urging releases to halt its spread in correctional facilities. (KGTV) — A 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit just outside the town Southern California town of Ridgecrest late Thursday.The quake struck near area of Little Lake, Calif., about 20 miles away from Ridgecrest just after 5:40 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. USGS estimated the earthquake's depth at about 1.2 miles.The earthquake could be felt from as far away as Spring Valley, according to the USGS' "Did You Feel It?" map.Several aftershocks were recorded around the area following the 4.7 shake up. The closest vial of medicine was more than 800 miles away, in Denver. "It was difficult," said Dr. Michelle Ruha, a toxicologist at Banner. She's also one of Johnson's doctors. She tried giving him antivenom the hospital did have, hoping it would save his life. Nothing was working."He was no longer able to open his eyes," Ruha said. "He was becoming weak. He was having trouble speaking."The only option was to fly the 10 vials of antivenom from Denver to Phoenix. Finally, eight hours after the bite, Johnson was starting to come back. "There was an angel on my shoulder," Johnson said. "Beyond Dr. Ruha, who is my personal angel, and I guarantee you that."Today, Banner University Medical Center has the cobra antivenom on-hand. It's also expanding what types it does carry. That number is up 3 percent from the start of the 2006 recession.Industries, like the trucking industry, who years ago might not have given Blocksom a shot, could now do just that.“The shortage of drivers spans the entire country and virtually every trucking company in the United States," Frank Gagyi, President of the Buckeye Interimobile Trucking company in Cleveland said.And that’s where Blocksom is hoping a door will open.“I've always liked driving, so I figured that I'd like to be able to make some money driving," he said.Since his wife's been ill, he's had to sell his home, mobile trailer and other assets to cover expenses. Now he says trucking is a practical solution for income.“That would be the best way to do it," he said.And though it’s something he has to do, he’s pretty optimistic about trying something new."I believe I can do this pretty well, and it would be a nice challenge and it'd be fun,” he said.Blocksom still has to pass his commercial driver's licenses test for him to start working.
