BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan pledged to strengthen defense ties Thursday at a meeting between Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani."Cooperation between the Chinese and Pakistani armed forces is exemplary and has been fruitful," Liang, also a state councilor, said during the meeting at Diaoyutai Guest House Thursday morning.Liang said the two sides should make continuous efforts to conduct their cooperation programs well.He said China would join hands with Pakistan to bring military relations to a new high.Kayani said Pakistan values its defense and security cooperation with China, noting that the two countries have cooperated fruitfully in national defense industries in recent years.He added Pakistan would further strengthen exchange and cooperation with China.Kayani also met with Chinese State Councilor and Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu, top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo, and Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong later Thursday.During the meeting with Meng Jianzhu, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in law enforcement and security.Hailing results achieved in the two fields, Meng pointed out Pakistan's active efforts in cooperating with China, including in anti-terrorism. He said he believed that the China-Pakistan cooperation in law enforcement and security would continue to develop with the joint efforts from both sides.Kayani echoed Meng saying the Pakistani government and its armed forces attached much importance to the strategic cooperation with China, and the government would further enhance it.During a meeting with Guo Boxiong, the senior officer of the People's Liberation Army of China stressed the importance of strategic communication between China and Pakistan.Guo said the all-weather friendship between the two countries has endured major international challenges. CHANGCHUN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Floods have left 63 people dead and 59 missing in northeast China's Jilin Province over the past two months, local authorities said Monday.More than 4 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 700,000 people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, about 62,000 houses have collapsed and 193,000 others have been damaged, along with 1.16 million hectares of cropland having been inundated, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at almost 19 billion yuan (2.8 billion U.S. dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.In the industrial city of Tonghua, torrential rains have damaged water pipelines, leaving 300,000 people without tap water for two days.Residents have largely relied on bottled water over the past 48 hours as authorities ordered 25 fire trucks to deliver water for domestic purposes aside from drinking to residential communities from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday.About 1,700 tons of water had been delivered by truck, officials said.

KINSHASA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo arrived in Kinshasa on Friday night to begin a three-day visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).The visit by the Chinese official is set to strengthen cooperative relations between the two friendly countries, officials said.Dai is scheduled to meet with Congolese President Joseph Kabila and Prime Minister Adolphe Muzito on Saturday.During his stay in DR Congo, Dai will visit the June 30 boulevard, the People's Palace and Kinshasa's Fiftieth Independence Hospital, which were all constructed by Chinese firms.Dai, who is heading a Chinese delegation on a five-nation African tour, had previously visited Ethiopia, Algeria and Equatorial Guinea. The trip will also take him to Zambia.

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland Saturday marked the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties at a reception in Beijing.Addressing the occasion, senior Chinese official Liu Qi said China hopes to take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary to enhance mutual political trust and cooperation with Switzerland in various fields.Liu, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said China attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with Switzerland, one of the first Western countries to recognize the People's Republic of China.Currently China is Switzerland's second largest trading partner in Asia, and Switzerland is a major partner of China in Europe, said Liu.Doris Leuthard, President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of Federal Department of Economic Affairs, said Swiss-China relationship has deeply developed since the establishment of the diplomatic ties on Sept. 14, 1950.Leuthard said the two economies are complementary and can achieve win-win results in fields such as environment, machinery and financial services.Leuthard is paying a working visit to China from Aug. 10 to 15, at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao.
