(KGTV) — NASA announced partnerships Tuesday, including one with Carlsbad business Vulcan Wireless, to advance Moon and Mars technology.Thirteen U.S. companies will work with NASA to fast-track "space technologies and help maintain American leadership in space." You may know the name Vulcan Wireless because their transceivers about the size of your hand are helping NASA map the universe. "Of course we're the communication link so the images that come in they get transmitted through our radio waves," Kevin Lynaugh, Founder of Vulcan Wireless, said.ASTERIA launched in 2017, "ASTERIA (Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research in Astrophysics) is a technology demonstration and opportunistic science mission to conduct astrophysical measurements using a CubeSat." Basically the telescope uses light to map stars and planets.That was their biggest project to date. Now NASA hopes their partnership will help increase connectivity for deeper space missions."When you have a spacecraft floating out there, if you don't have a data link it's a brick right? So we provide the communications," Lynaugh explained it's similar to how your Wifi modem works at home.In Vulcan Wireless's Lab, you'll find the same technology NASA uses."When we close this thing down and we lock it we're able to pump all the air out of it so we can simulate space environment with this," Lynaugh said. They have a machine that simulates heat, extreme vibrations, a vacuum among other equipment.All this to ensure their equipment is prepared for space. The transceiver is equipped with rechargeable batteries, fueled by solar panels, and compact, making it ideal for NASA, military and commercial projects. Lynaugh launched Vulcan Wireless in 1993. His passion was instilled by his father throughout his youth. CHERRY VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Apple Fire in Riverside County has almost doubled in the last day. As of 5:00 p.m. Sunday, it has grown to 20,516 acres, with 0% containment. Mandatory evacuations are in place for more than 7,000 people. Authorities believe this may have been caused by arson.This weekend, multiple San Diego fire agencies are helping fight the Apple Fire. Experts say our local agencies are equipped to support the fight in Riverside and any incidents at home.The conditions are almost too perfect for the raging Apple Fire."Fuel, weather, and topography - All three of those things come together in that part of the state," CAL FIRE San Diego Fire Captain, Issac Sanchez said.The Apple Fire is burning just north of the city of Beaumont in Riverside County. Sanchez says the flames are relentless, and crews on the ground need all the help they can get."Any agency, regardless of their size, cannot handle anything of this nature, in size and complexity," Sanchez said.Overnight, the fire erupted into the San Bernadino National Forest, which officially made it a federal incident. But multiple local crews from San Diego County are now at ground zero to help."It's not just a CAL FIRE show. It's not just a US Forest Service show," Sanchez said. "Everybody is on deck. Everybody is contributing. Everybody is engaged right now."Some of the local crews assisting in Riverside County include San Diego Fire-Rescue, Poway Fire Department, Coronado Fire Department, and the North County Fire District.Early Sunday afternoon, maintenance crews were doing final checks for CAL FIRE San Diego's air fleet, stationed at the Ramona Airport. These are valuable assets on stand-by to help attack the flames from above.ABC 10News learned that just before 3 pm Sunday, one of CAL FIRE San Diego's small tactical planes out of Ramona were dispatched for emergency assistance. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Officials have identified the bicyclist killed this week after being hit by a train in Carlsbad.Thursday night, 37-year-old Jason Holsinger was riding his bike on the sidewalk when he came to the Grand Avenue train intersection in downtown Carlsbad. Officials say even though the crossing arms were fully down, he rode around them and collided with the side of a passing train.The San Diego County Medical Examiner ruled the death an accident.Holsinger's death has renewed worries of safety surrounding train crossings in Carlsbad.The tragedy occurs just two days after Operation Clear Track, an event meant to raise awareness about railroad safety hosted by Carlsbad Police, Amtrak Police, and Operation Lifesaver. The event is the largest rail safety law enforcement initiative in the U.S., running from Sept. 22 - 28.In 2017, the family of Patrick Terrin filed a lawsuit against the City of Carlsbad and BNSF Railway, arguing they "negligently, carelessly and wrongfully failed to properly warn persons crossing the railroad tracks."Terrin was killed in 2014 after a night of bar-hopping nearby with his sister and friends. He had crossed under the crossing arm bar before it was fully down, as the rest of the group waited. Despite begin several feet off the tracks, he was hit and killed.The family's lawyer says crossing arms only extend across traffic lanes, leaving sidewalks unmarked with no paint to warn pedestrians where to safely stand.To make the area safer, Carlsbad has approved construction on a trench along the tracks as a safety measure.
