One of the people inside the Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee where a gunman opened fire said she played dead in order to stay alive.Kayla Shaw, age 21, shared her story with Scripps station WTVF in Nashville three days after three customers and a restaurant employee were killed. "That was a very traumatic experience, and it changed my life," Shaw said. "I went to a store for the first time yesterday, and I was constantly looking over my shoulder and checking my surroundings. Every little noise scared me."Shaw is from Brownsville, Tennessee and was in Nashville to visit her cousins over the weekend.They were at a different Waffle House that morning, but it was so busy that they placed a to-go order at the Murfreesboro location instead.She was paying for her food near the counter when gunshots erupted."I heard a loud pop on my left side, and after that I felt the glass from the window hit my face and I fell on my right side," she remembered. "I laid there, and my first thought was, 'God please don't let me die inside of a Waffle House.'"The young mother showed the scratches to her face from the glass and the bruise on her arm after hitting it against a stool. She said all she could do at that point was close her eyes and pray."The one time during the altercation I opened my eyes, the only thing I saw was the shooter's genitals because he was naked in the direction I was laying. I question why I got to live, but I feel like my actions by playing dead actually helped me live after I heard the gunshot," she emphasized. "My whole body was motionless."Unbeknownst to her, another restaurant patron wrestled the AR-15 from the gunman and likely saved countless people from dying.She hid behind the counter as soon as she no longer heard gunshots."I actually tripped over someone's dead body and I fell right in front of a young lady who had a majority of her leg blown off. I was in such a state of shock, all I could do was pray over her," added Shaw. "She asked me to give her her phone which was under the guy's body I tripped over."When it was clear to go, Shaw frantically ran to the car and drove off with her cousins.It did not take too long before she spotted the naked gunman on the run."I'm speeding though like we're so shocked, and I see the naked shooter on the side of the road. I was almost paralyzed in that moment. It was so terrifying to leave that place and to actually see him on the side of the road walking, while my cousin was on the phone with dispatchers," she said. That same day she got to meet James Shaw (who she is unrelated to), the man credited and honored by Tennessee lawmakers for stopping the shooter from killing others. She described the moment as emotional as both hugged and cried in each other's arms."I continued to express my gratitude to him," she said. "James, on behalf of me and everybody that walked out of the Waffle House, we thank you so much."Travis Reinking, age 29, was arrested for the shooting following a nearly 35-hour long manhunt. The victims he's accused of killing were Taurean Sanderlin, Joe R. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A sales tax increase approved by voters in November took effect Monday in the City of Oceanside. The city put Measure X on the ballot last fall to raise the tax rate from 7.75 to 8.25 percent. Voters passed the measure, 55 percent to 44 percent. The estimated revenues are expected to bring in million annually, according to city officials.New tax revenues, minus a state administrative fee, will go to the city. The half-cent sales tax was designed to provide money for first responders, pothole maintenance, graffiti clean-up, and public infrastructure projects. The tentative spending plan for the revenues includes an additional Homeless Outreach team, Crime Suppression team, road repairs, and a new police station at the beach."We are grateful to the Citizens of Oceanside for approving Measure X and are working to ensure that they receive tangible enhanced public safety services and infrastructure improvements," said Assistant City Manager Deanna Lorson in a statement to 10News.Measure X is set to expire in seven years. Not just because it can help slow the spread of the virus, but can also help you get to where you need to be, and it’s a trend that could continue to grow.“If you don’t have that test, you may not be able to allowed to enter the country or state, be forced into quarantine, or even be fined a fee both for testing and for non-compliance for the requirements,” said Dr. Kelly Cawcutt, Assistant Professor of Medicine & Infectious Diseases of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.It’s becoming more common to have paperwork proving you’ve had a negative COVID-19 test just days before your arrival to a destination overseas, and states could soon follow suit.“Several states are starting to ask for very similar requests where you’ve had a negative COVID test within the last 3-5 days, or you’ve been in a full quarantine either on arrival, or you pay for a test on arrival,” said Cawcutt.Proving you’ve tested negative can help slow the spread, including in areas that can’t afford to pay the price of an outbreak.“Some of the areas that for vacation, maybe smaller areas, and they may not have a health care system that can maintain an outbreak brought in by travelers,” said Cawcutt.So if you’re traveling, whether for work or vacation, it’s essential to lookup that pandemic related information before you even reach that spot.“Really vetting out what you’re doing, where you’re going, and what the requirements are both for travel but also for the actual location you’re planning to attend could be things to think about and plan ahead for in ways that we haven’t routinely had to plan,” said Cawcutt.“I would look to see if there are a lot of cases in that area and really reevaluate whether you want to go or not, if you don’t have to go and there is a lot of coronavirus things spread there, I would seriously reconsider it,” said Anne O’Keefe, Senior Epidemiologist with the Douglas County Health Department.It’s also critical to remember that getting test results back can take a few days, so planning ahead is crucial in fighting against this deadly pandemic.“You don’t want to go somewhere and make other people you’re visiting, whether its family, your co-workers, or business colleagues. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — An orphaned mountain lion cub who was badly burned in a Northern California wildfire is being treated at the Oakland Zoo after being rescued. The zoo says a firefighter rescued the four- to six-week-old cub Wednesday from the Zogg Fire. The cub, who weighs less than 4 pounds, had his whiskers singed off and his paws badly burned. He was given antibiotics, pain medications and a milk formula for kittens. A vet at the zoo says he's eating on his own and acting “feisty," which are both promising signs of recovery. 547

(AP) — A police officer who arrested two 6-year-old students at a Florida elementary school last week has been fired.Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon announced Officer Dennis Turner's termination Monday afternoon. He says he reminded other officers of department policy that prohibits arrests of children under 12 without a manager's approval.State Attorney Aramis Ayala, head prosecutor of Orange and Osceola counties, said earlier Monday she was dismissing misdemeanor battery charges against both children.
