Seventeen black women made history Tuesday night in winning judicial seats in Harris County, Texas.The 17 Democratic candidates were elected under a campaign they called "Black Girl Magic Texas," hoping to be the largest number of black women elected judges in Harris County.Harris County, which includes Houston, is the largest county in the state.Some of the women celebrated their success on social media."This election is still sinking in," LaShawn Williams, judge-elect for one of the county civil courts at law, wrote on Facebook. (KGTV) — A 99-year-old local man who survived Pearl Harbor was honored this week and shared his memories about the attack.Retired Marine Corps Captain John Campbell, 99, was honored at a luncheon in Solana Beach on Friday where he spoke about the attack 78 years ago. Campbell, one of only a handful of Pearl Harbor survivors today, recalled the confusion when Japanese planes began bombing the Hawaiian naval base in the early hours of Dec. 7, 1941."We thought originally it was the Army-Navy maneuvers ... then we saw our airplanes catch fire," Campbell said. "We had no idea and you're still stunned probably to the next day trying to figure out what it is."The surprise of the attack levying everyone on the Hawaiian base overwhelmed and anxious."The first night in Pearl Harbor, you didn't dare light a cigarette because everyone was so trigger happy and they'd shoot before they even thought about it," Campbell said.RELATED: Post Office in Poway to be named after Pearl Harbor survivorThe veteran says he was thankful the attack didn't continue further, noting the base would've been incapable of fighting back at that point."We had no airplanes. The ships were out of duty ... they were still burning," Campbell said. You could see the gold in their teeth, they were smiling," Campbell recalled. "Everyone was pretty jumpy for a week or so. "I've been lucky all my life ... I even became the president of a television network. I owned my own theme parks ... I can't complain. I really had a fantastic life," Campbell said.Campbell was one of around 50,000 service members who were at Pearl Harbor during the attack. More than 2,400 Americans were killed during the raid that prompted the U.S. to enter World War II."The service is a camaraderie. Especially when you're under fire you're really close to your buddies. SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Another San Diego-based company is moving forward on developing a vaccine for the coronavirus. Sorrento Therapeutics is working on several projects that they believe could lead to viable vaccines or treatments. One of them was announced on Monday. Sorrento Therapeutics said it was partnering with Boston-based Smartpharm to create a gene-encoded antibody vaccine. “In the effort to more quickly resolve the global COVID-19 crisis, our company has initiated a rapidly accelerated program for the identification of potent neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus antigens that may be used for either treatment or prophylaxis,” said Henry Ji, CEO of Sorrento Therapeutics. Sorrento Therapeutics is also working on another vaccine called the I-Cell project. That vaccine uses a decoy virus to activate a person’s immune system to train it to attack the real virus. It’s also developing a protein called COVIDTRAP that can bind to the receptors on the coronavirus, thus blocking it from being able to bind to the receptors on healthy human cells. If proven succesful, it could be used as a treatment or preventative measure.How long will it take for them to be ready?“That all depends on what leeway the FDA gives us,” said Mark Brunswick, Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Sorrento Therapeutics.
