SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — FBI investigators are asking the public for help finding the suspect who robbed a Chase Bank location in San Marcos on Wednesday.The FBI and San Diego Sheriff's Department say the suspect entered the Chase Bank at 348 South Twin Oaks Valley Road at about 11:45 a.m. and waited in line. He approached the counter and produced a handwritten note that said, "Give me all your 50's and 100's and give me the note back."The teller gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of money and the suspect fled the scene on foot.Investigators described the suspect as a white male, between 25 and 30 years old, standing 5' 11", and with a thin build. SAN FRANCISCO (KGTV/AP) — California’s education chief has applauded the state’s two largest school districts, Los Angeles and San Diego, for this week’s decision not to reopen classrooms this fall amid rising coronavirus cases. But Tony Thurmond says the same rules need not apply in counties with low rates of infection. In a media briefing, Thurmond says that in counties where the number of cases is low, schools could reopen for in-person classes as long as they follow the state's guidance on physical distancing and wearing face coverings. “Everyone shares the desire to reopen schools and agrees that the best place for children to learn and thrive is in the classroom connected with caring teachers and staff. We also understand that schools are more than a place of learning: They provide critical necessities like meals, relationships with caring adults, and support for working parents,” said Thurmond. “But we can only open schools if it is safe to do so. As the largest educational agency in the country, our stance has been consistent during this pandemic: Science, data, and safety must guide any decision about reopening a school. SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. — In-person schooling was supposed to begin Monday for the J. O. Combs School District, but a move by teachers and staff forced the district to cancel school for the day.On Friday, a J. O. Combs Spokesperson said 109 teachers and staff requested not to work on Monday."Due to these insufficient staffing levels, schools will not be able to re-open on Monday as planned. This means that all classes, including virtual learning, will be canceled," wrote J. O. Combs Superintendent Dr. Gregory Wyman in a letter to parents on Friday. "At this time, we do not know the duration of these staff absences, and cannot yet confirm when in-person instruction may resume."A teacher in the district said that one of the reasons teachers decided to call out Monday was that they felt unprepared to teach students virtually and in-person.Teachers are expected to simultaneously instruct students in the classroom and those at home via live stream. One teacher believes they were not adequately prepared to cater to both types of learners, since all of the educators' attention has been on executing online learning."The issue is that [a] teacher would not be able to tend to the online learners that are on Google," said a teacher in the district. "Even in-class learning must be modified for online. So it's a lose-lose for both types of learners."That teacher said only one hour of training was given for the live stream equipment."Some classes have as many as 36 [on] their roster or more. About half are choosing to stay home, so we really need to service our online learners."Aside from the feeling of unpreparedness from teachers, many feel unsafe since benchmarks set by the Arizona Department of Health Services have yet to be met by any of the school districts."My coworkers do not feel safe. Metrics being met is a big deal. (KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's Department officials say no charges will be filed against a couple who wore a swastika mask at a Santee grocery store in May.SDSO said after investigating there wasn't enough evidence to charge the couple with a crime.On May 7, SDSO says a man and woman walked into a Food 4 Less wearing surgical masks with swastika symbols attached to them. The store's management asked the couple to remove the masks, and after they refused, deputies were called, SDSO said.Deputies arrived and asked the couple to also remove the masks, to which the man reportedly replied, "I'm not here promoting some Nazi propaganda. I'm here peacefully protesting against the Governor's insane lockdown."The man also told deputies he was upset and frustrated with the state lockdown.After deputies told the man the store has the right to refuse business and asked them again to remove their masks, they did."This incident should serve as a reminder for anyone contemplating wearing or displaying items closely associated with hate and human suffering that our society does not tolerate this behavior," an SDSO spokesperson said in a release. "Santee is a city of families and the community is rightfully disgusted at this couple's despicable behavior.
