BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- China needs to expand the Renminbi, or yuan, cross-border settlement efforts when conditions allow, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Friday."It is necessary for China to seek appropriate timing to expand the cross-border yuan settlement to more cities, enterprises and overseas pilot areas," said an international financial market report released on the central bank's website Friday. But the report did not detail the conditions for appropriate timing. The foreign trade volume settled in yuan is still small compared with China's total foreign trade volume, said the report, without specifying figures.Official figures from China's General Administration of Customs showed that the country's exports in 2009 stood at 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars, down 16 percent from 2008.China's State Council, or Cabinet, announced in April 2009 a pilot program to allow exporters and importers in five cities -- Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan -- to settle cross-border trade deals in yuan. The latter four cities are all in south China's Guangdong Province. The Bank of China (BOC), China's largest foreign exchange bank, announced on July 6 last year that its Shanghai branch had received the first cross-border yuan trade settlement deal from the BOC (Hong Kong). The government is considering enlarging the scope of cross-border yuan settlement from commodity trade into service trade, said the report.Yuan settlement was in accordance with the market demand, said Cao Honghui, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, but increasing the yuan's global acceptance would be decided by factors such as the country's economic development and the financial system development.

SHANGHAI, May 6 (Xinhua) -- More than 33 million Shanghai World Expo tickets have been sold, according to the latest statistics from the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.A total of 33.11 million tickets, including 23.96 million individual tickets and 9.15 million group tickets, had been sold as of Thursday, the statistics showed. As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, a total of 902,300 people had visited the Shanghai World Expo Park.On Thursday, 105,600 people visited the Expo as of 5:30 p.m. but this was a sharp drop compared with more than 200,000 people on May 1, the opening day.A spokesman from the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination said even though the Expo lasts for 184 days, ticket holders should consider coming earlier as that would mean avoiding the huge crowds expected before the end of the event.

BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature will convene its bimonthly session from April 26-29 and review draft amendments to the State Secrets Law and the State Compensation Law.The decision was made Friday at a meeting of the Council of Chairmen of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, presided over by top legislator Wu Bangguo. The draft amendment to the State Secrets Law, which will undergo its third reading during the upcoming legislative meeting, aims to boost citizens' awareness of the importance of safeguarding state secrets. The draft amendment to the State Compensation Law, which will be submitted for its fourth reading, aims to better defend people's rights from being violated by the state. It is also hoped to cover the protection of detainees' rights following a series of deaths in the country's detention houses. The session will also deliberate, for the second time, on a draft law on protection of oil and natural gas pipelines, according to a statement issued by the council. The statement said a treaty on explosives left over from war and a Sino-Indonesian extradition treaty, both submitted by the State Council, or Cabinet, are expected to be ratified at the session.Lawmakers will also discuss Cabinet reports on protection of migrant workers' rights, the development of the cultural industry, strengthening road safety management, the implementation of a law protecting Taiwan compatriots' investment, as well as a motion regarding appointments and dismissals. At Friday's meeting, members of the Council of Chairmen expressed their condolences to victims of a deadly earthquake that hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province early Wednesday. They also paid tribute to rescuers from the People's Liberation Army, armed police, among others at the forefront of quake relief.

SHENZHEN, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Preliminary investigation shows that factors including failed romance, unrestrained gambling could be the reasons behind suicide of a Foxconn Technology Group employee Friday, said police authorities in south China's Shenzhen City.Nan Gang, 21, climbed to the top of a factory building in Foxconn's industrial complex in Longhua Township and fell to his death at 4:37 a.m., said Huang Jianwei, a spokesman of the Bao'an Police Station, of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau.Nan's suspected suicide was the 10th of the kind ever happening at the Foxconn's Shenzhen plant since the beginning of the year.Police said they learned from investigations that Nan Gang's parents were divorced and Nan was the only child of the family. Nan's ex-girlfriend got married this year in February, and his new girlfriend also deserted him early this month.Nan was said to be ill tempered and fond of gambling, and was thus in deep debts before his death.According to the police, not long ago, Nan had fights with his co-workers, so he employed others to beat the co-workers, but was later blackmailed by the same group of people.Nan allegedly had said he would take revenge and even showed his intent to commit suicide before he fell off the building Friday.Police have already captured the suspects for blackmailing Nan pending further investigation.Shenzhen-based Foxconn's company profile on its website says it's the world's top electronics manufacturer with more than 600,000 employees and ranked 109 among the Fortune 500 companies in 2009. It is linked to Taiwan electronics giant Hon Hai Group.
