Six months after a catastrophic limo crash killed 20 people in upstate New York, a son of the limo company's owner faces a litany of charges.Nauman Hussain has been indicted on 20 counts of second-degree manslaughter and 20 counts negligent homicide, Schoharie District Attorney Susan Mallery said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.Police have described Hussain as an "operator" for Prestige Limousine Chauffer Service, which was owned by his father Shahed Hussain.A felony complaint said the younger Hussain hired driver Scott Lisinicchia, despite knowing Lisinicchia didn't have the appropriate license to drive the limo. The complaint also said Nauman Hussain knew or should have known the modified Ford Excursion had mechanical and safety deficiencies, including some that would have affected the brakes. The limo had failed inspection just a month before the October 2018 crash and "was not supposed to be on the road," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. But Hussain's attorney Lee Kindlon said "Mr. Hussain is not guilty of criminal wrongdoing, and we will fight for him every step of the way." Kindlon has said Nauman Hussain had "very little involvement" in the company, handling some marketing and booking and answering the phone. How the crash happenedLisinicchia was driving 17 guests to a birthday party in upstate New York when the modified Ford Excursion plowed through a stop sign and struck a parked SUV, officials said. The driver and 17 passengers were killed, along with two pedestrians. The victims included newlyweds and four sisters. The National Transportation Safety Board issued 1648

Rick Gates, one of the most significant former Trump campaign advisers who flipped on President Donald Trump in the Mueller investigation, was sentenced to 45 days in jail and three years probation by a federal judge Tuesday morning.Gates, a longtime deputy to 2016 Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort who shared searing details about Trump's efforts in 2016 with special counsel Robert Mueller, admitted to helping Manafort conceal million in foreign bank accounts from their years of Ukraine lobbying work.He agreed to plead guilty to related charges of conspiracy and lying to investigators in February 2018. He also signed up to cooperate, giving Mueller's team key insights into Manafort and Trump's actions in 2016 during the height of the Russia investigations."I accept complete responsibility for my actions," Gates told Judge Amy Berman Jackson on Tuesday.Gates will also pay a ,000 fine and fulfill 300 hours of community service. He will be allowed to serve his jail sentence on weekends during his three years of probation.Jackson made clear that the failure of Gates, and his former boss Manafort, to disclose they were lobbying on behalf of Ukrainian clients was a significant wrong."When people don't have the facts, democracy fails to work," Jackson said. The judge said she believed that Gates was motivated by greed, and rejected one letter of support that suggested politics was a factor."Politics don't corrupt people, people corrupt politics," she added. But the judge said Gates' significant cooperation was important to consider as well for the role it played in the investigation of Russian interference and the Trump campaign."Gates' information alone warranted, indeed demanded, further investigation" for the sake of national security and the integrity of elections, Jackson observed. How Gates helped MuellerUltimately, Mueller relied on many details from Gates in his 1917

Senate Republicans are drafting a stopgap spending bill to extend the funding deadline for approximately 25 percent of the federal government until February 8, according to three sources. The decision to move forward on the short-term plan hasn't been finalized, the sources said. There are still senators who are urging GOP leaders to negotiate for a broader deal.A final decision likely won't be made until at least Wednesday, the sources said, and President Donald Trump still needs to sign off on any path forward.Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York told reporters earlier Tuesday that Democrats would "seriously consider" supporting a short-term spending measure. 694
