INDIANAPOLIS — A Roncalli High School board of directors member has resigned in response to the administration's actions against a guidance counselor who says she's been asked to either resign or "dissolve" her same-sex marriage. Shelly Fitzgerald is on paid administrative from Roncalli High School after she says someone sought out her marriage certificate, which shows she's married to another woman, and gave it to school leaders. Because those emotions have ranged from sadness to anger, I have waited to send this note for hope that this unexpected and unnecessary issue would change for the better. It’s the news glioblastoma patients in St. Lucie County feared they’d hear: There are more cases than they knew of.This week Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida reported on 11 glioblastoma cases in the Fort Pierce-area, discovered through word of mouth from the patients and their families.For two days, more people wrote to WPTV, telling us about other people they know with the disease, which affects just 13,000 people each year in the U.S.When WPTV broadened the focus area to include all of St. Lucie County, our number now increased to roughly 30 cases over the last five years. Several more cases date with the few years previous to that.The Florida Department of Health confirms it is monitoring their concerns and considering how to move forward.The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County has also met with some of the Glioblastoma patients and families.Patients like Kevin Perry say they never anything about the disease.“You hear about cancer all the time, but Glioblastoma? No,” Perry said.He was diagnosed in 2016 shortly after he had a seizure.“Some days you feel like you’re brand new. Other days you feel like its all over you,” Perry said.Perry’s wife, Ronna, is among the now dozens of local families wanting to know if their cases warrant a bigger investigation.I would like to know if there’s something going on. Or, is it just getting more prevalent.”Thursday, when WPTV’s glioblastoma count was around 13, we spoke with Dr. Chaim Colen, a neurosurgeon who has treated some of the local patients.“It’s definitely high. Is that a coincidence? It's been a roller coaster year for amusement parks across the country, with crowds or long lines this year because of COVID-19. Most theme parks that were able to reopen did so with guests' safety in mind."This fall is a unique time for us as families are dealing with coming out of the pandemic and what can they do, and certainly it's not over. Everybody is still very concerned about health and safety and looking to the attractions industry is a great place," said Susan Storey, the Global Communications Director for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA).Storey says most theme parks across the country are mandating masks and not allowing as many people into the parks."They’re very good at managing how many people can be in a line, to how many people would be in a restaurant," Storey said. "We’re experts at moving people around and being able to provide a safe, healthy, fun experience."Storey says most theme parks are outside on large properties, giving people the ability to spread out."Technology has come into play, too. You can buy your tickets online and show them with your phone. You can do mobile ordering with food, so you’re not standing in line. You can just order, go and pick it up," Storey said. "So, there’s a lot of things that the industry has immediately implemented and added to take their already safe and fun environment."Six Flags over Georgia has fully decorated for Halloween, hoping to encourage families to visit "HalloFest" this fall."Right now, we have reduced capacity, so we are operating at a far lower level at the park than you’d typically see, and that’s so we can ensure social distancing," said Divina Mims, the Communications Manager at Six Flags over Georgia and Whitewater.Six Flags is also conducting daily temperature checks on employees and guests and conducting contactless bag checks. Every other row on a ride is empty, allowing for social distancing even on roller coasters.Hershey Park in Pennsylvania is limiting capacity through an online reservation system."We've also added 300 hand sanitizers, and we have a variety of guest ambassadors in positions to help our guests with all those safety enhancements," said Quinn Bryner, Director of Public Relations for Hershey Entertainment and Resorts.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discourages large gatherings where maintaining six feet of distance isn't possible, as that puts people at the highest risk for contracting COVID-19.According to the CDC's website, "The more people an individual interacts with at a gathering and the longer that interaction lasts, the higher the potential risk of becoming infected with COVID-19 and COVID-19 spreading."However, Storey says, parks are doing everything they can to keep customers safe."We provide a lot of jobs, and we do a lot for our communities," Storey said. In the summer of 2013, Aimee Stephens sent her employer a letter explaining she was about to change her life. She was a transgender woman, and she intended to start dressing as such at work.She never expected then that she was about to enter into a yearslong legal dispute, one that might soon become a litmus test for lesbian, gay and transgender rights before the next US Supreme Court.Stephens had spent months drafting the message to management at R&G and G&R Harris Funeral Homes, a family-owned business in the Detroit area, she says. She was 52 years old at the time, and she had spent her entire life fighting the knowledge she was a transgender woman, to the point that she had considered ending her life.Now that she was coming out at work, she hoped her nearly six years of positive performance reviews, which had earned her regular raises, would count in her favor.But her boss, a devout Christian, told her the situation was "not going to work out," according to court documents. Thomas Rost offered her a severance package when she was fired, but she declined to accept it.She filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Department of Labor's enforcement agency, and the government sued the funeral home. The department accused the funeral home of firing Stephens for being transgender and for her refusal to conform to sex-based stereotypes.A district court agreed with the funeral home that the federal workplace discrimination law known as Title VII did not protect transgender people. But it found that the funeral home did discriminate against Stephens for her refusal to conform to its "preferences, expectations, or stereotypes" for women. The EEOC appealed.The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Stephens and the EEOC in March. The funeral home's lawyers accused the court of exceeding its authority by expanding the definition of sex in a way that threatens to "shift" what it means to be a man or a woman.In July, lawyers representing the funeral home asked the Supreme Court to take up the case to determine if transgender individuals are protected under Title VII's sex-based provisions. If the court takes up the case, it could have broader implications for the definition of sex-based discrimination. And it could impact case law that precludes firing anyone -- gay, straight or cisgender -- for not adhering to sex-based stereotypes."The stakes don't get much higher than being able to keep your job," said Harper Jean Tobin, director of policy for the National Center for Transgender Equality. "Harris Funeral Homes is a stark example of the job discrimination that so many transgender people face."Advocates say it's one of the most important current civil rights issues for the transgender community, along with similar considerations in education and health care. And they say it has been settled by years of case law. In the past two decades, numerous federal courts have ruled that federal sex discrimination laws apply to transgender and gender-nonconforming people, including Title VII, the Title IX education law, and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act.But lawyers from the Alliance Defending Freedom, the conservative Christian nonprofit representing the funeral home, say it's far from settled."No court or federal agency has the authority to rewrite a federal statute. That power belongs solely to Congress. Replacing 'sex' with 'gender identity,' as the 6th Circuit and the EEOC have done, is a dramatic change," senior counsel Jim Campbell said in a statement."What it means to be male or female shifts from a biological reality based in anatomy and physiology to a subjective perception. It may be the undercard match in 2020, but the battle for control of the U.S. Senate will not be cheap. Democrats are beginning to post fundraising totals for Q2 and numbers show that despite the pandemic, donating to Democratic politicians isn't appearing to take a hit. For example, in Montana, Former Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock announced he has raised .7 million to defeat Republican Sen. Steve Daines, who is also expected to raise millions. Montana is shaping up to be a crucial state for Democrats. Currently, Republicans control 53 seats in the United States Senate. It is looking more likely a Republican will win the Senate race in Alabama which means Republicans will have 54 seats. But they must also defend seats in states like Montana, Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina, Georgia and Maine. Democrats believe it is possible to win five of those races, giving Democrats control. Democrats would also gain control the Senate if they win four of those races and Joe Biden wins the presidency, since the vice oresident casts tie-breaking votes. MONEY TALKS The biggest sign yet that Democrats are focused heavily on the Senate is the race in South Carolina. Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham is up for reelection and his race is generally not seen as a competitive, yet Jaime Harrison, Graham's Democratic challenger, announced he has raised over million. While much focus is being placed on Democrats, Republicans are expected to match Democratic numbers when it is all said and done.
