ATLANTA (AP) — Two more Atlanta police officers have been fired over an incident in which two college students were pulled from a car during a protest against police brutality.Atlanta police confirmed Wednesday that Sgt. Lonnie Hood and Officer Armon Jones were fired as a result of their involvement in the May 30 incident.Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and police Chief Erika Shields previously announced the firing of two other officers who were involved in the incident.Hood and Jones were among the officers caught on camera shouting at a young couple in a car in downtown traffic during the Black Lives Matter protests. The cops then proceeded to fire Tasers at the pair and dragged them from the vehicle.Throughout the incident, the man and woman can be heard screaming and asking what they did wrong. The four officers who have been fired and two other cops are facing criminal charges in connection with the altercation.Hood is charged with aggravated assault against both Young and Pilgrim for using a Taser against both of them, according to an arrest warrant obtained by The Associated Press. AVILA BEACH, Calif. — Officials say two women are lucky to be alive after a humpback whale capsized their kayak as they paddled in the ocean on Monday. The incident, which occurred near the Cal Poly Pier, was caught on video by multiple people in the area.Julie McSorley says she went out Sunday and took pictures of the whales and convinced her friend to go kayaking with her on Monday.McSorley says there were a lot of birds and fish in the area, so people had their phones at the ready. She said she and her friend could see whales off in the distance.Seconds later, one of the whales was right underneath them. While some video footage makes it appear as the women went inside the whale's mouth, McSorley says their kayak just overturned, and they were thrown underwater.Video shows McSorley screamed before going underwater for about five or six seconds.Humpback whales are considered an endangered species, and marine mammal experts say they can be unpredictable and dangerous. Experts say people should keep about a football field's worth of space between themselves and the large mammals, when possible. The Port San Luis Harbor Patrol says enforcement can be difficult. Boaters can think they've left a whale plenty of space, but the mammals move quickly. The whales have been making appearances close to shore between Morro Bay and Avila Beach in recent days. Marine mammal experts say they are looking for food that is currently easy to find near the shore. This story was originally published by KSBY in San Luis Obispo, California. 1548

ASHLAND, Ore. -- In the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon, you’ll find rows upon rows of vineyards. Rob Folin is the winemaker at Belle Fiore in Ashland.Although the grapes are different, the dry climate is similar to Napa Valley, making it very ideal conditions for wine-making. However, just like other crops, the weather can have a huge impact on wine grapes. As a winemaker, Folin says he needs to know what his vineyards are facing and how to handle what Mother Nature throws at him.“Rain, snow, frost, smoke, fire, we’ve got it all,” Folin said.In the summertime, it can be clear one day and smoky the next.“Right during harvest or right before is when it’s the worst time to have smoke – which would be right now,” Folin said.Harvest season in southern Oregon typically starts in mid-September and goes until mid-October. Folin says one of the stressors for a winemaker is smoke taint. That’s when smoke gets trapped in the skin of the grapes giving them a campfire aroma and ashy texture. It’s a flavor very few people enjoy.“If your vineyard had a fire right next to it and you just had solid smoke coming in there, then you can really have this barbecue or campfire kind of aroma,” Folin said.Unless you send your grapes in somewhere to get tested, Folin says there’s no way to know your grapes have smoke taint until they go through fermentation. He says whether a grape is impacted or not depends on a lot of factors, and it’s very unpredictable.“Our vineyard here could be totally fine, and the one across the street, their resulting wines could be smoky, like it’s just how the wind goes, the intensity of the smoke, how long it was there, how close it was, did it settle overnight.”When it comes down to it, there’s only so much you can control. As of right now, not much can be done to prevent smoke taint, and smoky summers in the western U.S. seems to be the norm lately.Folin says winemakers that face a lot of smoke taint can make more white wines since white wines are fermented without the grape skin. Or they can market their wines to consumers as a smoky wine for those that like the taste. At the end of the day, Folin says winemakers have to go with the flow.“Just roll with it," Folin said. "Ya know, fix what you can. If you can’t do anything about it, what can you do? Do what you can do and move forward.”With the exception of one fire near the vineyard in the past month, Folin says it’s been a very great year for his vineyard. He’s hopeful something good can come out of 2020 after all.“With all the stuff that’s going on, maybe we’ll have the best grapes this year. I don’t know. Just going to count on that.” 2649

As mixed messages continue regarding face coverings, Mississippi became the first state to lift a statewide mask mandate. Cities and towns can now put their own rules in place. The governor said the facts and data still show masks work, and the state is still requiring them at certain events, including the state fair that starts this week.“I suspect Mississippi will see an increase in cases if people stop wearing face coverings,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security.Infectious disease experts remind people just because an order may be lifted, doesn't mean they should stop wearing masks.“We have to have an effective vaccine to prevent people from getting infected as well as prevent them from getting severe disease, that we had adequate testing capacity so people could know their status and wouldn't go out into public if they were positive,” said Adalja. “I think short of that, masks are going to be one tool that we have to continue to use and many people are going to get accustomed to masks and they're going to realize that masks also likely have some impact on other respiratory viruses, so we may see mask wearing much more common in the United States, similar to what it is in other Asian countries, because of the value people are gaining from them.”New research on homemade cloth masks found they expel invisible cotton fibers into the air. It’s unknown if those fibers can carry infectious viral particles, which drives home the point of washing any cloth facial coverings. Make sure you do that regularly. 1580
