SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine veteran suffered major injuries after a wrong-way driver crashed into him on I-5 early Saturday morning.Friends have identified the victim as Luis Maldonado. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. His service dog Jax, who was also in the car, was taken to an animal hospital and is expected to survive.The wrong-way driver died at the scene. California Highway Patrol suspects he was under the influence of alcohol. He has not been identified.Maldonado's friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the mounting medical costs.  622

SOLANA BEACH (CNS) - A man was arrested Thursday after entering a North County bank, telling everyone inside to get on the floor, announcing that he was robbing the premises and directing workers to make a 911 call to report the crime-in-process. The odd robbery scare at the Wells Fargo branch office in the 200 block of Santa Helena in Solana Beach began just after 9 a.m., according to sheriff's officials. The perpetrator -- a thin, roughly 6-foot man who appeared to be in his 30s, wearing a black hooded jacket with the cowl pulled up over his head -- entered the bank minutes after it opened and promptly made his series of demands, Lt. Karla Menzies said. He issued no threats of violence and displayed no weapons during the takeover, the lieutenant said. When deputies arrived a short time later, they found the self-described robber inside with his hands in the air, Menzies said. The man, whose name was not immediately available, surrendered without incident and was taken to Vista Detention Center to be booked on suspicion of attempted robbery. The motivation for the suspect's actions was unclear. ``(Deputies) think that there were some mental-health issues (involved),'' Menzies said. 1209

Rand Paul will return to the Senate on Monday after being seriously injured at his home in an alleged attack by his neighbor earlier this month."Kelley and I want to thank everyone once again for your thoughts and prayers for my recovery," he tweeted Monday morning. "While I'm still in a good deal of pain, I will be returning to work in the Senate today, ready to fight for liberty and help move forward with tax cuts in the coming days and weeks."The Kentucky Republican suffered six broken ribs after the November 3 incident with Rene Boucher, his neighbor of 17 years. Boucher pleaded not guilty Thursday to misdemeanor fourth degree assault charges. While initial reports suggested the two men were disputing over lawn issues, the senator tweeted articles last week questioning those explanations.And his senior adviser Doug Stafford said the two men hadn't talked in years prior to the attack. "This was not a 'fight,' it was a blindside, violent attack by a disturbed person," Stafford said in a statement. "Anyone claiming otherwise is simply uninformed or seeking media attention."The Senate is expected to hold two votes Monday evening related to administration nominations. Snapchat as you know it may soon disappear.Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, said Tuesday that it is planning to redesign the messaging application to make it easier to use after facing several consecutive quarters of anemic user growth."One thing that we have heard over the years is that Snapchat is difficult to understand or hard to use, and our team has been working on responding to this feedback," Evan Spiegel, Snap's CEO, said in prepared remarks for an earnings call Tuesday.Spiegel added that the redesign could be "disruptive" to Snap's business in the short term. "We don't yet know how the behavior of our community will change when they begin to use our updated application," he said.The announcement came after yet another disappointing quarter for the newly public company.Snapchat added just 4.5 million new daily active users in the third quarter, bringing its total audience to 178 million daily users.
