VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Detectives called off a suspect search in Vista after it was discovered that a juvenile accidentally shot himself in the leg Monday afternoon. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department was called to the 100 block of Paseo Marguerita in Vista around 3:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a male juvenile with a gunshot wound. While responding, deputies received information about possible suspects. Authorities found the juvenile near a small pond with a gunshot wound to the leg. Meanwhile, a neighboring school was given an order to lock down. After an extensive search for the suspects, deputies broke down a perimeter set up around the area. The boy was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. After investigating, detectives learned that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and "appeared to be accidental." The department said it's no longer looking for any suspects. 907

(KGTV) -- A man who detained two juveniles before taking their skateboards while posing as a sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Monday.  Abraham Joseph Nava, 24, was sentenced to three years of formal probation after pleading guilty in July to felony false imprisonment.In a separate case, Nava also admitted to calling in a false report of a bomb threat. Nava was given credit for 149 days in custody.RELATED: Guilty plea from man who posed as deputy, detained juveniles  He will have to comply with counseling conditions as required by the probation department, including a forensic examination to help determine what course of treatment to take, said Deputy District Attorney Peter Estes.Nava was arrested on June 14, several days after the sheriff’s department was contacted about a suspect claiming to be an undercover deputy.During interviews with several employees in the Main Street area of Vista, investigators learned that the suspect passed out fake business cards and was interacting with juveniles.Investigators also learned that the two juveniles were detained and had their skateboards taken. After identifying Nava as the suspect, investigators obtained a warrant to search his home where they discovered several pieces of San Diego County Sheriff’s Department uniform items, including badges.A box of fraudulent business cards was also found. Nava was charged on June 26 for calling in a false report. 1451

From early in-person voting to voting by mail, states offered people various ways to do their civic duty."In many ways you can see that as a blessing or a curse of the American election system, that we have 50 different forms of election administration and within each state, counties have a lot of discretion of how they want to run their elections and design their ballots," said Seth Masket, a professor of Political Science and Director of the Center on American Politics at the University of Denver. Masket says each state having a different election process actually strengthens the security of American elections from foreign hackers. But it can also make it harder for some people to vote depending on what state or county they live in."For the most part, Election Day is not a holiday in the United States and if people are going to vote, they need to take time off work or make some sort of arrangements for child care. There’s a level of inconvenience to it and not every state and city is very accommodating of that," said Masket.A number of states across the country have been 100% mail-in ballots for quite some time, others have joined on recently. "I believe Oregon was the first to go in this direction back in the late 1990s. They started doing all mail-in ballots, a few others, mostly western states including Hawaii and Washington and Utah followed suit. Colorado started doing this for the 2014 election cycle, so it's a relatively small number of states. But since California is now in the mix it’s a large number of voters," said Masket.Ben Hovland is the Chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. He says in the last presidential election, 25% of Americans voted by mail or absentee ballot."We've seen a few other states come on recently like Utah and Hawaii and then a few states this year but you also have states like Arizona where they have permanent early voting list where about 75% of their voters are getting a mail ballot sent to them automatically," said Hovland.Hovland says in nearly every state, voters can request a mail-in ballot. Though, some states require you to provide a valid excuse for it. Still, he expects a record number of people will be voting by mail in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. No matter how you vote this year, experts say make sure you're going to your local government, and not social media, for information about how and where to vote, registration information and vote-by-mail deadlines."The National Association of Secretaries of State has led a program called Trusted Info 2020 which is oriented towards getting people to go to their local election official for information," said Hovland. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A Vista bike shop owner is fed up after his shop was broken into for the third time in six months.Early Sunday morning, Jesse McCormack got a call from his security company. The person on the phone notified him that thieves had gotten into his shop, 211 Bikes, again.“I woke up in an immediate panic,” McCormack said.This month, he was supposed to be celebrating his one year anniversary at the location. Instead, he is filing yet another police report.The surveillance video shows a man wearing a hoodie and shorts ransacking the shop, snipping cable locks, and running out.The man captured on the security video took a 2017 MASI Volare worth ,199, a MASI Vivo Uno worth ,999, a Haro Shredder 12" worth 0, a rack of sunglasses worth ,000, and several important files.The first time 211 Bikes was the target of a crime was last October, just six months after opening. No one was arrested for the crime. “It was a wake-up call,” McCormack recalled.The second break-in was on December 10, 2017. Five rare road bikes, along with other equipment, were stolen. “There’s some nights that I don’t really want to go home,” McCormack sighed. “I just feel like I need to stay the night here, and just keep an eye on things.”In the last six months, McCormack has lost at least ,000. He and his landlord have put up new security cameras, LED lights, locked up the bikes, even changed the dead bolts.When one of the stolen bikes was listed on online sale app, he even worked with detectives to arrest the seller. But the thefts continued.McCormack recently got a call from another bike shop owner. They sent McCormack a photo of a man, riding a rare and expensive road bike in San Marcos —The exact one that was stolen from his shop in December.He immediately noticed that the leg tattoo on this rider was very similar, if not a match, to the tattoos on the man captured on Sunday morning’s surveillance video.“He matches the description I have of the prior incident,” McCormack said.This could be a break, he said, hoping that somebody recognizes the man, and turns him into the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.“Action needs to be taken,” McCormack said. “We need to have the ability to feel safe, in order to conduct business, especially as a small and vulnerable business owner, who is operating on a shoe string budget."McCormack is now working with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, asking for increased patrols in the area.He thought about changing locations. But because the area is surrounded by great bike trails, and he services so many local loyal customers, he said moving is not an option.  2698
