SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to discuss the reorganization of the county's fire protection and emergency medical services into two separate agencies at its July 7 meeting.The reorganization would allow more flexibility for, and accountability of, dependent fire and medical services in the county's unincorporated areas, Supervisor Jim Desmond said.One of the agencies would be the Fire Protection District, which would provide fire services to the jurisdictions within the current service area. The other would be the Fire Authority, which would continue focusing on public safety radio communications.The supervisors formed the San Diego County Fire Authority in 2008 and developed a plan to cover and consolidate 1.5 million acres. The authority is currently part of County Service Area 135, which provides the government structure to organize and fund fire protection and emergency medical services in the unincorporated area.Since the creation of the authority, the board has invested more than 0 million to boost fire and emergency services capabilities. Currently, the Fire Authority contracts with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to provide services. Collectively, the services are known as County Fire.According to a staff report, County Fire has more than doubled in size in the past five years. The proposed reorganization of the agency was proposed by Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who described its evolution as like a "baby" growing into an adult.If the board agrees to separate the two functions "to better meet current and future demands," using Jacob's recommendations, it would divest County Service Area 135 of its fire protection and emergency services powers and subsequently create the San Diego County Fire Protection District, which would be a committed county function. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Friday identified a 44-year-old man who was found fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Encanto area of San Diego.The man was identified as Gilbert Lee Johnson, of San Diego, the San Diego Police Department reported.Officers found Johnson about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Varney and Theodore drives, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.After police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the area, officers reported finding him slumped over in the vehicle suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs."It appears the victim was in the area talking to an acquaintance when another vehicle pulled up near the victim. The suspect got out of his vehicle and fired several rounds at the victim," Dobbs said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is reporting no fatalities and 26 drunk driving arrests in San Diego County for the Labor Day weekend period of 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.Last year for the same period, there were 40 DUI arrests and no fatalities in the county, according to the CHP.Across California, the CHP reported 551 DUI arrests and 18 fatalities for the same period. Last year, they reported 717 DUI arrests and 11 fatalities.The DUI arrests are only those made by CHP officers, while fatality statistics are for all law enforcement agencies.Statewide, 13 vehicle occupants were killed in CHP jurisdiction, six without safety belts. There were four motorcyclists killed in CHP jurisdiction, one without a helmet.The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways, and on all roads in unincorporated areas. 833

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pac-Man is the newest inductee into the Comic-Con Museum's Character Hall of Fame, the San Diego-based museum announced Thursday.Pac-Man "is being honored as the original digital game mascot for his enduring impact he has had on the video game industry and the role of storytelling in games," according to the museum, which is scheduled to partially open in Balboa Park in mid-2021.The iconic, hungry yellow circle will be the second character in the museum's hall of fame. Batman was inducted in the hall of fame's inaugural year in 2019.This year marks the 40th anniversary of Pac-Man, which is the highest- grossing video game ever made, according to the museum. As of 2016, the game had generated more than billion in revenue."We thought Pac-Man would be the perfect addition to the Museum Character Hall of Fame because he inspires a sense of nostalgia in many of us and even though he is turning 40, he is still highly relevant in pop culture today," said Eddie Ibrahim, senior director of programming for the Comic-Con Museum.
