SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least two former students of a coding bootcamp in downtown San Diego received refunds after a Team 10 story earlier this summer.Sean Calma and Lane, who declined to give his last name, were enrolled at Origin Code Academy. They both said they were promised one-on-one instruction, which they did not receive. Neither had previous coding experience, so they both asked many questions before enrolling."One time, [the instructor] didn't even know what he was looking at on my computer screen. A second time, he was like, I don’t know what that is. Third time, he asked to go ask another instructor," Lane told Team 10 back in June.CEO Jeff Winkler said coding is difficult, but would be willing to talk to the students about getting their money back. During a previous Team 10 interview, he pointed to many satisfied students and dozens of graduates, including one who recently got a job at Facebook.Winkler did not respond to Team 10's request for comment regarding the refunds.Coding bootcamps are regulated by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). Origin Code Academy was previously operating without approval. The academy appealed its citation, its fine was reduced, and as of August, it is allowed to operate. As part of its approval, it had to pay back students who asked for refunds. Both Calma and Lane could not talk about their refunds the received after Team 10's story because both had to sign a non-disclosure agreement before getting their money back.A spokesperson for the BPPE told Team 10: "The Bureau encourages Origin Code Academy students who have not yet received a requested refund to contact the Bureau so we can investigate their claims. If any of the subjects in your story are still waiting for refunds please encourage them to reach out." 1809

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City of San Diego crews spent Monday preparing for the first significant rainfall since May. “With the first rains of the season in the forecast, crews are busy clearing critical drains, putting no parking signs along flood prone streets and installing backup generators for the City’s crucial storm water pump stations,” the City of San Diego posted on twitter. "During the rains, 15 crews from the City's Storm Patrol will be actively patrolling, monitoring areas in the city and responding to instances including temporary flooding and downed trees or tree branches," added city spokesman Anthony Santacroce. The heaviest rain is expected overnight Tuesday through the day Wednesday, according to 10News meterologist Megan Parry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cheer on floats, marching bands, and colorful cars will roll down the streets of Hillcrest and Balboa Park in July for the annual San Diego Pride Parade. The parade, which is San Diego’s largest single-day civic event, attracts some 250,000 people every year. Marching begins at the Hillcrest Pride Flag at University Avenue and Normal Street. The parade moves west down University, turns south on Sixth Avenue, left onto Balboa Drive, and ends at Quince Drive. The parade is free for spectators, but you’ll want to bring cash to buy water or food from one of the businesses along the route. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Any other year, Sonia Highbaugh and her family would be spending Christmas gathered at her sister’s house, but in true 2020 fashion, things look a little different this holiday.“I was sad this year not being able to spend the holidays with my extended family and everyone, but we make those hard decisions for the betterment of everybody,” said Highbaugh. “We actually stayed home, it’s just my immediate family, my boyfriend, and our two boys. We made videos of them opening their gifts so we can share with family so we can feel like we were together.”Highbaugh works for the Chicano Federation and says through training with the San Diego Latino Health Coalition; she received pointers on how she should be spending the holiday this year.“With the pandemic, we wanted to be safe. I’m also expecting, so it’s very important for me to stay safe,” she said.Registered Nurse Francisco Garcia can relate.“It’s just us three,” said Garcia. While breaking traditions can be challenging, Garcia, his wife, and daughter also decided to spend Christmas at home together.“Being a Latino, my family chooses to get together every year for Christmas and have food and presents. Just having everyone together is what we take pride in, and so it’s very different that we’re not around each other this year,” he said.Working as a registered nurse, Garcia knows all too well the potential consequences of large gatherings during the pandemic, especially after the surge in COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving celebrations.“Seeing an influx of patients and the number of patients we’re seeing with COVID as the year went on was a big challenge,” he said.Health officials across the nation, including here in San Diego County, have urged people to stay home, avoid traveling and large gatherings, despite that some continue to ignore the guidance.According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 846,520 people in the United States were screened at TSA checkpoints on Christmas Eve alone, and millions more were screened since last Friday.Still, many families are playing safe and having a great time doing so.“It has been fantastic; I think the biggest challenge we’ve had is not burning the Christmas dinner,” said Garcia.“We have to trust our community. Hopefully other people are being safe so we can be safe,” said Highbaugh. 2351
