LOS ANGELES (AP) — The western Joshua tree needs protection under the California Endangered Species Act because of threats from climate change and habitat destruction, the Center for Biological Diversity said in a petition Tuesday to the state's Fish and Game Commission. The petition comes amid rising concern about the future of the crazy-limbed trees with spikey leaves that have come to symbolize the Mojave Desert and draw throngs to Joshua Tree National Park."The state has to step up for these trees," center conservation director Brendan Cummings said in a statement. The petition asks that western Joshua trees be given "threatened" status under the act.The request states that the trees meet the definition of a plant that "is likely to become an endangered species in the foreseeable future in the absence of the special protection and management efforts."Researchers have found that Joshua trees are dying off due to hotter and drier conditions, and fewer young trees are surviving, according to the center, a nonprofit conservation organization based in Tucson, Arizona. The trees are migrating to higher elevations where there are cooler and more moist conditions, but they face destruction by fire due to invasive, non-native grasses in those locations.Joshua trees also face challenges due to urban sprawl in the desert as well degradation of habitat for energy projects, powerlines, pipelines and off-road-vehicle use.The western Joshua tree's habitat includes Joshua Tree National Park and stretches to the west along the north slopes of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountain ranges into the Antelope Valley, northward along the eastern flank of the southern Sierra Nevada and eastward toward the edge of Death Valley National Park and into Nevada. The eastern Joshua tree — a distinctly different plant — lives in the Mojave National Preserve and eastward into Nevada, Arizona and Utah. The Center for Biological Diversity said that under the California Endangered Species Act, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife has three months to make a recommendation to the Fish and Game Commission, which would then vote on the petition next year. 2171

LONDON (AP) — Authorities say a Florida teen hacked the Twitter accounts of prominent politicians, celebrities and technology moguls to scam people around the globe out of more than 0,000 in Bitcoin. The 17-year-old boy was arrested Friday in Tampa. He faces 30 felony charges.“These crimes were perpetrated using the names of famous people and celebrities, but they’re not the primary victims here. This ‘Bit-Con’ was designed to steal money from regular Americans from all over the country, including here in Florida. This massive fraud was orchestrated right here in our backyard, and we will not stand for that,” Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said. The hacks led to bogus tweets being sent out July 15 from the accounts of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg, and a number of tech billionaires including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The tweets offered to send ,000 for every ,000 sent to an anonymous Bitcoin address.“I want to congratulate our federal law enforcement partners—the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, the FBI, the IRS, and the Secret Service—as well as the Florida Department of Law enforcement. They worked quickly to investigate and identify the perpetrator of a sophisticated and extensive fraud,” State Attorney Warren said.“This defendant lives here in Tampa, he committed the crime here, and he’ll be prosecuted here,” Warren added. The FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice conducted a complex nationwide investigation and located the teen in Hillsborough County. The teen is facing the following charges:Organized fraud of over ,00017 counts of communications fraud of over 0Fraudulent use of personal information of over 0,000 or 30 or more victims10 counts of fraudulent use of personal informationAccess to computer or electronic device without authority, scheme to defraud“Working together, we will hold this defendant accountable,” Warren said. “Scamming people out of their hard-earned money is always wrong. Whether you’re taking advantage of someone in person or on the internet, trying to steal their cash or their cryptocurrency—it’s fraud, it’s illegal, and you won’t get away with it.” 2241

LONDON (AP) — Royal Dutch Shell says it is planning to cut between 7,000 and 9,000 jobs worldwide by the end of 2022 following a collapse in demand for oil and a subsequent slide in oil prices during the coronavirus pandemic. The oil giant said Wednesday that around 1,500 employees have already agreed to take voluntary redundancy this year and that it is looking at a raft of other areas where it can cut costs, such as travel, its use of contractors and virtual working.Overall, it said it expects the cost-cutting measures to secure annual cost savings of between billion and .5 billion by 2022.CEO Ben van Beurden said in an interview posted on the Shell website that the jobs cuts will reduce the amount of people between the company’s leadership and its lower level employees.“None of this changes our values as a company, and we will do what we have to do with honesty, integrity and respect for people,” wrote the CEO. “We will be as fast as we can and we will show care for all those who lose their roles or who are negatively affected.”Once the reorganization is complete, the CEO says he believes many more people will be positively affected – working in a quicker, more customer-focused organization and enabled to take the decisions that make a difference. 1282

LOS ANGELES (AP) — ViacomCBS says it's cutting ties with Nick Cannon because of what the media giant called his 'hateful speech" and anti-Semitic theories. The company's move came in response to remarks made by Cannon on a podcast in which he discussed racial bias with a former Public Enemy member, Richard Griffin. According to NBC News, Cannon said on the podcast episode, which was shot last year but aired on June 30, that Black people were the "true Hebrews" and talked about anti-Semitic conspiracy theories involving the Rothschild family.Cannon produced "Wild 'n Out," a comedy improv series for VH1, the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel. He accused the company in a lengthy Facebook post of trying to silence an "outspoken black man" and said he wants full ownership of the "Wild 'n Out" brand. "If I have furthered the hate speech, I wholeheartedly apologize," Cannon wrote. "But now I am the one making demands. I demand full ownership of my billion-dollar ‘Wild ‘N Out’ brand that I created, and they will continue to misuse and destroy without my leadership! I demand that the hate and back door bullying cease and while we are at it, now that the truth is out, I demand the Apology!” 1203

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The search continued Monday for a man suspected of punching a 47-year-old man at a Dodger Stadium parking lot and seriously injuring him, leaving him on life support at County/USC Medical Center, according to his family and media reports. Rafael Reyna, a father of four, was identified by his wife, Christel, in multiple media interviews as the man who fell to the ground when he was punched and suffered a fractured skull as the crowd was leaving following the Los Angeles Dodgers' 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at the end of 13 innings early Saturday, in the longest regular-season game in Dodger Stadium history -- 6 hours, 5 minutes. She told NBC4 she was on Facetime with Rafael Reyna when she heard a woman yell ``Why did you do that?'' as a man approached her husband and cursed at him. Then she heard a crack and the screen went black. She said her husband has swelling and bleeding on the brain. Later in an interview with ABC7, Christel Reyna made a tearful plea for anyone who saw what happened to contact police. ``Somebody needs to come forward,'' she said. ``I know people saw it. I heard them.'' She and an adult son have been with her husband at the hospital, but Christel Reyna said she has not told her younger children, ages 11 to 15. A GoFundMe account has been set up for Reyna at www.gofundme.com/dodger-stadium-attack-victim-on-life-support. Initially, Los Angeles police investigated the incident as an altercation but have now labeled it an assault. The suspect, who got away, is described as a man in his 20s who might have driven off in a white SUV, possibly a Toyota 4Runner, police said. The Dodgers security team is working with police and the organization released the following statement Saturday: ``Last night, an altercation occurred suddenly between two men who were leaving the stadium,'' the statement said. ``One of the men was injured as a result of the altercation. A witness immediately reported the incident to stadium personnel, and emergency medical technicians were promptly dispatched to provide medical assistance at the scene. The matter is now being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, and the Dodgers are cooperating fully with the investigation.'' In 2011, an attack outside Dodger Stadium left Bryan Stow of Santa Cruz severely brain-damaged. The two men who attacked him pleaded guilty in 2014 and one, Lonnie Sanchez, was sentenced to eight years in prison while the other, Marvin Norwood, received a four-year sentence. The incident prompted increased security measures at the stadium. Anyone with information on this weekend's attack was asked to call the LAPD. 2667
