The pandemic has not deterred people from spending money during the holidays this year.According to Mastercard SpendingPluse, holiday retail sales were about 3% higher in 2020 than they were a year ago.“American consumers turned the holiday season on its head, redefining ‘home for the holidays’ in a uniquely 2020 way. The mother of a Michigan high school student cried in court as a judge said her son's million bond would remain in place, but that he would consider written arguments from the teen's defense attorney next month.  The 17-year-old DeBruyne, a South Lyon High School student is charged with Making a Threat of Terrorism, which is a felony, after the teen allegedly asked friends on Snapchat if they wanted to reenact what happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida where 17 people were killed days earlier. One friend reported the post to police. DeBruyne lives in Green Oak Township with his parents, and after receiving report of the alleged threat, police went to the family's home where they said the teen had no firearms in his possession. Friends and some fellow students on South Lyon High's Cross Country team and their parents showed up at court Wednesday in support of DeBruyne. "I don't think Ryan DeBruyne is a danger to anybody," said Michelle Klevering who also called her son's friend a "very good kid" and "very responsible."DeBruyne's defense attorney, Zack Glaza, asked Judge Travis Reeds to consider lowering his client's million dollar bond. Judge Reeds said he would consider written motions on the matter on March 22 when DeBruyne is due back in court for a preliminary examination.   1391

The national intelligence director’s office says it can’t begin engaging with President-elect Joe Biden’s team until a federal agency starts the process of transition, which the Trump administration is delaying. The office, which oversees all U.S. intelligence agencies, said it must follow the Presidential Transition Act, which requires the General Services Administration to first ascertain the winner of the election Trump is contesting.Intelligence agencies have given general intelligence briefings -- minus information on covert operations and sources and methods -- to presidential nominees since 1952. Biden started receiving them soon after he became the Democratic presidential nominee. It’s unclear if he is still getting them. Some presidents have allowed their successors to receive the President’s Daily Brief, containing the nation’s most sensitive intelligence information. President Donald Trump would have to authorize Biden to receive that brief.A Biden transition spokesperson declined to comment on the briefings. 1041

The Miami Police Department says what began as disagreement about masks led to an assault on Sunday evening.According to a statement from the Miami Police Department, the incident began at Latin Cafe, a ventanita or coffee shop near Miami International Airport. Surveillance video shows five people milling about outside of the cafe. The Miami Police Department says a few patrons got into an argument about mask compliance. Video shows one customer, wearing a mask and a red shirt, gesturing toward cafe employees and appearing to speak in exaggerated tones toward another customer without a mask. The customer without a mask stepped toward the man in the red shirt, and then a struggle ensued. Additional security footage shows the man in the red shirt falling to the ground. That man's girlfriend saw the incident from her car and ran to help. Police say she was also hit during the scuffle.Miami Police Officer Kiara Delva told WSVN-TV in Miami that the fight left the man in the red shirt "disoriented."Police say they're searching for four people in connection with the incident. It's unclear how many of those people could face charges.Miami currently requires the use of masks in public to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. First-time offenders are issued warnings, while repeat offenders could face fines. 1325
