BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will offer residents 20,000 rental bikes this year to ease the city's notorious traffic jams, according to authorities with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.Five hundred rental kiosks will be set up around the city to offer residents over 20,000 rental bikes, the commission said.Beijing has also proposed creating new bike lanes in some areas, including main streets, historical and cultural conservation areas and some major business districts, from 2011 to 2015, according to the commission.The capital city currently has about 5 million vehicles on its roads, leading to serious traffic congestion that frustrates the city's residents on a daily basis."A lack of bike lanes is the reason why I refuse to ride a bike. Bikes and vehicles are using the same lanes, and that frightens me and makes me feel unsafe," said Beijing resident Song Tao.People often park cars on the city's existing bike lanes, pushing cyclists onto the vehicles' lanes, said Song.To ease traffic congestion, Beijing has made various efforts to encourage people to opt for modes of public transportation.On Dec. 31, Beijing opened three new subway lines, bringing the number of subway lines in Beijing to 15, with a total length of 372 kilometers, said Beijing Metro Spokesman Jia Peng.Beijing will open four more subway lines in 2012, according to information released at a rail transit construction mobilization conference.Amid other measures to ease traffic in 2011, city authorities decided to allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered annually, slashing the new car registrations by two-thirds from the 2010 level.Meanwhile, vehicles are banned from roads one day each week according to license plate numbers.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Debates in the medical field developed on Monday as a U.S. government panel recommended that men of all ages should stop getting prostate cancer blood screenings.The United States Preventive Services examined all the evidence and found little if any reduction in deaths from routine P.S.A. screening and suggested that the test does more harm than good to healthy men.The P.S.A. test for prostate cancer, a blood test to screen for a protein that may indicate cancer, has become widely used because it can help detect tiny tumors at a very early sta ge, when they are theoretically most treatable.Unfortunately, according to the task force, the vast majority of the results are false-positives: the men don’t actually have cancer. And most of those found to have cancerous cells would not suffer ill effects because their cancer is so slow-growing that it would not cut short their lives. Those with faster-growing cancers may also not be helped if the cancer is extremely aggressive.After the recommendation came out last week, many prostate cancer specialists have been pushing back.Urologist Dr. Mark DeGuenther said this recommendation is more about saving money than saving lives. He said death rates from prostate cancer have dropped 40 percent since men began getting screened at age 40 and he says it will save taxpayers and patients more money in the long run to diagnose and treat cancers earlier rather than wait and have to provide expensive care for advanced stage cancers."We all agree that we've got to do a better job of figuring out who would benefit from P.S.A. screening," said Dr. Scott Eggener, a prostate cancer specialist at the University of Chicago. "But a blanket statement of just doing away with it altogether ... seems over-aggressive and irresponsible."Dr. Deepak Kapoor, chairman and chief executive of Integrated Medical Professionals, which includes the nation's largest urology practice, said "We will not allow patients to die, which is what will happen if this recommendation is accepted."That task force's recommendation isn't final - it's a draft open for public debate. BANGKOK, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Bangkok residents gathered in the city centre on Thursday, making ten thousand micro-organism balls to help clean the polluted water in flooded areas.Organized by local volunteer groups, the activity aimed to make 10,000 Effective Micro-organism balls (EM Ball), which are proven to be efficient in cleaning contaminated floodwater.According to Danal Chanchaochai, the organizer of the event, people in flooded areas were facing critical conditions as germs may spread in polluted water and threat their health. Mainly consist of soil, rice bran and micro-organisms, a tennis-sized EM Ball is capable to clean up 10 liter of water and can last for as long as one month, which making it a perfect water sanitizer.Another main objective of the event was to educate citizens on the simple steps of making EM Balls, in case of more flood in the city, he said.The organization had generated buzz on social media sites like facebook and twitter, calling everyone to help.Held at Amarin Plaza, one shopping mall at city centre, the activity attracted groups of volunteers, including office workers, local students and even foreign visitors.Volunteers were lining up to get the raw materials from the collection point and gave back completed EM Balls to the distribution centre in boxes. Residents needed to present their identity cards in order to retrieve the donated water cleaners.Volunteer Kulawan Ayura Chai said that, although her house hadn' t been affected by water yet, she understood the difficult situation faced by the victims and felt responsible to help.Lasted for three days from Thursday to Saturday, the activity aimed to make 100,000 EM Balls, adding to the 30,000 balls made earlier, to distribute to the flood victims in Bangkok and other regions in Thailand.

CHANGCHUN, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- An infrared camera set up by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and forestry authorities in northeast China's Jilin province has captured images of a wild Siberian tiger in the Wanda Mountains.Zhu Jiang, head of the WWF Northeast China Program Office, said Saturday that the photos, taken earlier this month, are the first images of a wild Siberian tiger taken in the mountainous area.He said the evidence consolidates the mountains' role as an important habitat for the endangered species, and reinforces the need for local authorities to tighten protection measures, especially clearing animal traps and improving animal rescue efforts.The agency estimates that there are fewer than 20 wild Siberian tigers remaining in China. They live in mountains in the northeastern Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces.Zhu said animal traps still pose a major threat to the safety of wild Siberian tigers and their prey.A wild Siberian tiger was found dead with a trap around its neck in the city of Mishan, Heilongjiang, in October.A WWF survey found an average of 1.6 traps for every 10 km of distance covered in the Siberian tiger nature reserves in Heilongjiang and Jilin last winter."The WWF hopes to cooperate with local governments to protect Siberian tigers and restore their habitats," Zhu told Xinhua. "We aim to help double the population of wild Siberian tigers in China by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger," he said.
