GUANGZHOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Devastating mud-slides triggered by historic rainfalls were blamed for the heavy casualty toll -- 70 dead and 65 missing -- in south China's Guangdong Province when typhoon Fanapi battered the region earlier this week, a government report said Saturday. The loss caused by mud-flows and landslides in Guangdong's mountainous western region is "very serious", said a disaster assessment report conducted by provincial disaster relief authorities. "Large-scale mud-slides occurred in many places, cutting off traffic and communications to towns and villages."In Magui Township, Gaochuan City alone, mud-slides left 66 dead or missing, it added. A military helicopter is seen on a drop-off point in Xinyi, south China's Guangdong Province, Sept. 25, 2010. Since torrential rainstorm brought by Typhoon Fanabi hit Guangdong this week and caused serious waterlog, China's army aviation regiment has bridged an air lifeline by airdropping daily necessities to disaster-stricken people.Xinhua reporters riding helicopters above the disaster zones saw a number of brown stripes of mud-slides laced the otherwise green mountain slopes. Flood-waters continued to flow down through the mud-slide tracks.Large swaths of farmlands were submerged in flood-waters while piles of rocks, debris, and trash dotted the basin at the foot of the mountains.By 6 p.m. Friday, about 99,500 people in Guangdong were evacuated for the Fanapi-brought disasters. Some 3,765 houses collapsed, 42,190 hectares of farmland were damaged, and the economic loss reached 2.4 billion yuan, latest official data show.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south. No casualties have been reported in Fujian. In the country's most devastating mud-slides in decades, nearly 2,000 people were killed in Zhouqu, Guansu Province after days of torrential rains poured the region in early August this year.
NEW YORK, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- For Lin Xuewen, secretary-general of United Chinese Associations of Eastern U.S., "incredible" is the best word to describe his experiences at the Shanghai World Expo."It was incredible to see the video played in the multimedia exhibition of the China Pavilion about China's vast migration from rural to urban areas over the past 30 years. I felt so overwhelmed by the incredible changes as if I was riding a time machine. Truly amazing," recalled Lin.Lin has been living in New York for more than three decades. He went to China to attend the Shanghai Expo in May. He said the rapid urban development in Shanghai was "incredible.""Look at the skyscrapers along the streets and skyline at night. It is even better than the New York City night view," he said. The biennial Expo opened on May 1 in Shanghai for a six-month run under the theme of "Better City, Better Life," with some 190 countries and 50 international organizations participating. The number of visitors to the Shanghai World Expo has exceeded 70 million, breaking the previous record set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which attracted 64 million people. The China Pavilion, named "The Crown of the East," has become increasingly popular since the opening of the World Expo, with a daily average of 50,000 visitors.

ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Saturday, kicking off his three-day official visit to Greece. The Greece visit, the first stop of Wen's four-nation Europe tour, is the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.During his stay, Premier Wen is due to meet Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Parliament Speaker Philippos Petsalnikos and hold talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou before witnessing the signing of a series of deals. Wen will also deliver a speech in the Greek parliament on China-Greece and China-EU relations."Coping with the financial crisis will be an important topic for talks between Wen and Greek leaders. We have a positive attitude about the measures taken by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said earlier on Wen's Greece visit. We hope Greece will recover soon from the difficulties," Fu said.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan said: "Once again, the premier will send a clear signal to the world that China will give a vote of confidence in the economic prospects of Greece and that China is taking practical action to assist Greece and the European Union in overcoming the crisis."The four-nation visit, lasting till Oct. 9, will also take Wen to Belgium, Italy and Turkey. Wen will also attend the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-European Union (EU) summit in Brussels from Oct. 4 to 6.
BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday called on Japan to make substantial efforts to create appropriate conditions for improvement of bilateral ties ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Yokohama. At a routine news briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei confirmed that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao exchanged greetings with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan prior to the start of the East Asian Summit last Saturday.Hong said China attached great importance to developing ties with Japan.Developing China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations was in the fundamental interests of both nations and their people, Hong said.China stands for resolving the problems between the two countries through dialogue and consultation on the basis of the principles of the four political documents, he said, adding China's position in this regard remained unchanged. The four political documents, namely the China-Japan joint statement on comprehensively advancing strategic and reciprocal relations, the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship and the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration, serve as the bedrock for developing friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries. In reply to a question on the sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands, Hong reaffirmed that the Diaoyu Islands and its adjacent islets have been an integral part of the Chinese territory since ancient times.China-Japan relations have been strained since a collision between two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler on Sept. 7 in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.The Japanese Coast Guard seized the trawler and detained the fishermen and the captain on Sept. 8.China, which claims sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands, has maintained the seizure and detention were illegal.
