LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A much-debated gas tax hike billed as raising billions of dollars a year for statewide transportation improvements will remain in place, with voters rejecting a ballot measure that would have repealed the increase.Proposition 6 would have repealed the hikes that took effect in November 2017, raising the tax by 12 cents per gallon for gasoline and 20 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. (KGTV) - A man with a handgun prompted a standoff with police near Long Beach City Hall Wednesday.A "hysterical female" called 911 to reported her husband was armed at a federal building, according to ABC affiliate KABC. Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies and Long Beach Police responded to the suspect in the 300 block of Ocean Blvd. just before 4 p.m., where the standoff began.LASD said the suspect had a "possible improvised explosive device" in his vehicle.SWAT officers and bomb squad officers were at the scene as the man has stood outside a van with his arms raised. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A police investigation confirmed suicide was the cause of death of a Black man found hanging from a tree in a Southern California city park last month. Los Angeles County sheriff's officials made the announcement at a Thursday news conference. The body of 24-year-old Robert Fuller was found early on June 10 in a park near City Hall in Palmdale. Sheriff's deputies found no evidence of a crime and an autopsy conducted the next day produced an initial finding of suicide. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Six Catholic dioceses across California, including Los Angeles and Orange, announced the creation today of a ``compensationalternative to pursuing lawsuits against the church.Diocese officials said the fund will be open to all clergy sex abuse victims, including people living in the country illegally and those who are barred from filing lawsuits because the abuse occurred long ago and is beyond the statute of limitations.``We have been providing pastoral care and financial support for victim-survivors here in the Archdiocese for many years,'' Los Angeles Diocese Archbishop Jose Gomez wrote in a letter to members of the diocese. ``We will continue to do so. But we also understand that some victim-survivors are reluctant to come to the church for assistance. Our hope with this new program is to give these people a chance to seek redress and healing through an independent program.''In addition to Los Angeles and Orange, other dioceses taking part in the program are San Bernardino, San Diego, Fresno and Sacramento -- collectively covering more than 10 million Catholics, or roughly 80 percent of the state's Catholics.
