A Bay View, Wisconsin, resident was surprised last month when he opened his federal stimulus check and found some numbers were missing. Clark Rendall found that his check that he said should have been ,200 was cut for just .60. "I looked at the check and it says it's for and 60 cents and there wasn't any sort of accompanying documentation or explanation in regard to where that number came from," he said. Rendall said he was contacted by the IRS back in March about a missing tax document, which he quickly sent to them.Since then he has not received his federal income tax refund, and that if the document affected anything it would be his refund, and would be for a few hundred dollars, not the ,200 amount of the stimulus check. He's tried to get answers, but has not heard back. "There's a phone number for the IRS but you call it, and it says if there's no one available to talk to you," he said.The IRS has a cutoff for people who make more than ,000 a year, and take off on stimulus checks for every 0 above that threshold. A kidnapping victim chewed through a telephone cord to escape captivity recently, according to police records. Phoenix police report that on August 23 a man, later identified as 54-year-old Michael Darrell Thorning went to a motel room near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road. He went to a room where the victim had allowed him to spend the night a few days prior due to the excessive heat. After using the phone, Thorning allegedly pulled a box cutter out and threatened the victim. They fought over the box cutter, but soon Thorning had the victim tied to a chair with a phone cord and blindfolded him. Thorning reportedly stole the victim's cash, debit card, and PIN. Thorning then withdrew 0 in cash from nearby ATMs, police say. According to court records, the victim "was able to free himself by chewing through a cord." He then went to the motel front desk for help. Police distributed pictures of Thorning taken from the ATM cameras to nearby businesses. A few days later police got a tip from a motel manager in the area, that Thorning was in their parking lot. Upon his arrest, Thorning allegedly admitted to tying up the victim, stealing his debit card and withdrawing money. He has been charged with kidnapping and robbery. 1250

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. – It is pretty to look at, but at times, treacherous to encounter: when snowstorms wreak havoc on the ground, it can come with a cost. Yet, because of limited research, snowstorms are not as well-understood as other weather phenomenon. That’s about to change. Inside a noisy hangar at NASA’s Wallops Island facility in Virginia sits a specially outfitted P-3 aircraft, also known as a “snow chaser.” “Snow can have a huge economic impact,” said Lynn McMurdie, principal investigator for a new research project called IMPACTS. “To be able to fly inside the clouds, where the snowflakes form, enables us to study the processes that go into forming the snowflakes that eventually fall down to the earth as snowfall in your backyard.” It’s all part of a five-year, million research project called IMPACTS, which stands for Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms. The team is embarking on its first snowstorm chasing flights this month. “It gets a bit turbulent. The plane is very capable and has great de-icing systems,” said Gerrit Everson, chief of flight operations at Wallops Flight Facility and a NASA pilot. “We would never put our crew or our passengers or the scientists in an unsafe position. So, we do a very good job at mitigating the risk. But, yeah, you do have to be willing to accept a certain degree of turbulence and bumps here and there.” It’s been 30 years since there’s been a major study of snowstorms like this one. What researchers are hoping to find out this time around isn’t just where the snow is going to fall, but how intense that snowfall might be. “People think the forecasting is really easy and simple, but it's actually very complicated,” McMurdie said. “Hopefully, we will be doing a better job so we can help joe citizen know what to do when there is a storm threatening.” Beyond that, scientists hope to also learn how snowfall can impact the water supply all over the planet. “We need water to survive and we need to understand how the water goes through the whole earth system,” McMurdie said.It’s a global ecosystem where winter wonderlands play a crucial part. 2186

A federal court in Washington, DC, has unsealed five search warrants that special counsel Robert Mueller obtained while investigating Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former lawyer and fixer.The newly unsealed documents show how Mueller had a judge's permission to follow the money from Russian sources to Trump's personal lawyer, and had reason to look into Cohen's extensive contacts with Russian government-linked individuals, some of which began on the day Trump won the presidency.The documents are from 2017, before Mueller referred the Cohen investigation to federal prosecutors in Manhattan, and generally show how Mueller was allowed to dive into Cohen's email accounts, including his Trump Organization email address.In a search warrant application from July 2017, prosecutors outlined how Cohen started communicating with a Russian-connected company on Election Day.
