SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Wednesday, the San Diego Police Department issued a press release in which the Chief reaffirmed his commitment to unbiased policing, months before the anticipated release of a new report about officers stopping people in the field. It comes amid community concern over a different report that suggests that minorities are stopped at higher rates.Over FaceTime on Wednesday, 10News spoke with Chris Burbank, a retired police chief from Utah who is now working with the Center for Policing Equity. It’s a nonprofit that looks at data surrounding police interactions with the community. “We try and reduce the disparity that exists in law enforcement today, throughout the country,” he adds.In September, his team partnered with SDPD to start analyzing the department’s stop data for a new report that should be released in about six months. Wednesday’s press release states in part, “Police Chief David Nisleit [reaffirms] his commitment to reviewing internal operations and making any necessary changes based on the report's findings."Last week, a separate ACLU-commissioned report was released that caused some community concern. According to the ACLU, records from SDPD and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department show a pattern of discriminatory policing against black people and people with disabilities. SDPD has not issued a formal comment on the ACLU-commissioned report. Last week, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department sent 10News the following statement. “The San Diego Sheriff's Department is committed to providing the highest level of public safety in all the neighborhoods we serve. We expect all of our stops, detentions, arrests, and searches to be constitutional and within Sheriff's policy. We regularly meet with community groups which allow us to address concerns and continue to build trust with the citizens of San Diego County. We have just been made aware of a report evaluating policing in San Diego. It would be premature to speak about the findings prior to reading and evaluating the methodology used to reach the conclusions presented in the report. However, at a glance some of the statistics in the report do not correlate with our numbers. For example, the report seems to overstate the rate at which Blacks and Hispanics are stopped within Sheriff's jurisdictions. The numbers in the ACLU report do not appear to be consistent with our data. Once we have had ample time to review the report, we will provide a more comprehensive response.”10News reached out to the Sheriff’s Department again on Wednesday for any new comment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police say they have made an arrest in connection with a deadly shooting in the Midway District during a meeting set up on social media.San Diego Police arrested 18-year-old Angel Garcia of San Diego on Wednesday and charged him in the murder of Eduardo Salguero, 18, of San Diego, on Nov. 25.Police say Salguero had arranged to purchase an item through Snapchat and met for the transaction behind several businesses in the 3600 block of Midway Dr. When he arrived, two Hispanic males entered his vehicle. During the meeting, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and the transaction turned into an armed robbery.RELATED: Midway District shooting victim killed during Snapchat transaction, police sayMultiple gunshots were fired inside the vehicle before the two suspects fled. Salguero was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries.Both suspects were described the suspects as Hispanic males, between 20-30 years old, who were wearing dark clothing at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Poway residents are once again voicing displeasure with the owner of the now-closed Stoneridge Country Club. Thursday, crews from Big Trees Nursery began removing dozens of trees from the property."I couldn't believe it," neighbor Brian Edmonston told 10News. "I thought it was outrageous and it was a cruel thing to do."In 2017, owner Michael Schlesinger backed a ballot measure which would have allowed him to build more than 100 condos on the land.  The day after Poway voters rejected the plan, Schlesinger closed the club.Poway City Councilmember Barry Leonard told 10News that because the land is private property and the trees being removed are not "native trees", Schlesinger is within his rights to remove and sell the trees.Leonard also said that because Schlesinger terminated water service to the property, he would rather see the trees removed than die. 908

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- On Thursday, January 3, the newest members of Congress will head to Washington D.C. to be sworn in. Among them is Mike Levin, who will represent California's 49th Congressional District. Levin, an environmental attorney, ran a campaign focused on younger voters. During the campaign, he cast his opponent, Diane Harkey as a “rubber stamp" for President Donald Trump. The district was previously represented by Darrell Issa. Juan Varges of the 51st Congressional District will also head to Washington. Varges made headlines recently after pointing the finger at the Trump administration for the situation at the border after hundreds of migrants rushed the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The 51st Congressional District consists of south San Diego County, Imperial County and California’s entire U.S./Mexico border. Also in Washington for the swearing in is Congressman Scott Peters of California’s 52nd District. The district includes the cities of Coronado and Poway as well as most of northern San Diego. Peters was first elected in 2012. In 2018, Peters introduced legislation to provide a tax credit who paid more than 30 percent of their gross income on rent and utilities. Rep. Susan Davis was re-elected in 2018 and represents California’s 53rd Congressional District. The district stretches from I-5 and Balboa Park through Mission Valley to East County and includes much of the heart of San Diego.Davis has been serving the district since 2001 and in 2018, won against her opponent, Morgan Murtaugh. Heading to Washington also is Congressman Duncan Hunter of California’s 50th Congressional District. Hunter has served the district since 2008 and recently made headlines after being indicted for alleged misuse of campaign funds. 1762

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead and police are searching for a suspect Saturday after a shooting in the Chollas Creek neighborhood.San Diego Police said the shooting occurred at about 2:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of University Ave. A 26-year-old Hispanic man was in an argument with a suspect at the interaction of 52nd St. and University Ave., according to witnesses, where the altercation continued toward the 4000 block of 52nd St.At that point, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim, police said.The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries.The suspect fled, heading west on University Ave.No suspect description was available.Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call SDPD 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 88-580-8477. 787
