You couldn't get on social media Tuesday without seeing Team Yanny and Team Laurel going at it. First posted on Reddit, the polarizing audio clip spread to Twitter. Soon everyone from regular Joes to celebs like Ellen DeGeneres and JJ Watt were talking about it (Ellen thought it was Laurel, but Watt was Team Yanny). It was like an audio version of "The Dress" -- a photo that went viral in 2015 when no one could agree whether the garment it showed was white and gold or blue and black, confirming that people will debate just about anything on the internet. And, like back then, there's a simple explanation for why people perceive one thing so differently -- and science can explain it."Part of it involves the recording," said Brad Story, Professor of Speech, Language and Hearing at The University of Arizona. "It's not a very high quality. And that in itself allows there to be some ambiguity already."Then, he said, you have to take into account the different ways people are listening to this -- through mobile phones, headphones, tablets, etc. That aside, Story ran an acoustic analysis on the viral recording of the computerized voice. He also recorded himself saying "Yanny" and "Laurel," for comparison."When I analyzed the recording of Laurel, that third resonance is very high for the L. It drops for the R and then it rises again for the L," he said. "The interesting thing about the word Yanny is that the second frequency that our vocal track produces follows almost the same path, in terms of what it looks like spectrographically, as Laurel."OK, so what does that all mean?"If you have a low quality of recording, it's not surprising some people would confuse the second and third resonances flipped around, and hear Yanny instead of Laurel."Story also said that, if you change the pitch of the original recording, you can hear both words."Most likely the original recording was 'Laurel,'" he said.If you heard "Laurel," you are the winner and have earned bragging rights for this round of internet debate. 2023

You may be having too much withheld from your paycheck. Give yourself an immediate pay raise by reducing your withholdings to a level that more closely matches your estimated tax liability. You’ll have more to live on or invest, and you might even snag a tax break if you use the extra cash to make tax-deductible contributions to a retirement plan, Stone says. 361

When wildlife officers arrived at 11:30 p.m., they decided the best way to get the mountain lion out of the house was to use non-lethal bean-bag rounds to fire at it in an attempt to chase it out the front door, according to a release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. After more than an hour, officers were successful in getting the mountain lion out of the house.CPW said they will have additional wildlife officers in the area Friday and over the weekend to make sure the mountain lion does not return.Officers reminded residents to keep ground-level doors and windows closed and locked at night. They also issued the following tips on reducing your risk of injury if you encounter a mountain lion. 706

Wilkett told the I-Team he just saw the tattoo recently at a local gas station. "A girl at the cash register with an XVI running from behind her ear and down her neck — 16," said Wilkett. "Looked out the window and there's her pimp, sitting in the vehicle. So this is happening." In some trafficking cases, the tattoo could be a barcode. “These barcodes are written in such a way by these tattoos and tattoo artists, that if you scan that with your smartphone it’ll tell you she’s or she’s ," said Wilkett. "The one that I saw was ." Wilkett said the one he saw was on a victim in her early 20s staying in an area safehouse. “Her response to that was that’s what I’m worth. I am worth ," said Wilkett. Natasha Nascimento, the founding executive director of Redefining Refuge, a Florida non-profit working with victims of child sex trafficking, said she's seen children branded and a majority of the tattoos are done professionally."The youngest child I’ve seen — I believe she was probably somewhere around 11-years-old — she had dollar signs... tattooed onto both of her eyelids," said Nascimento. Nascimento said there's a need to appeal to the tattoo artists behind the branding."If somebody is coming in there with a child and telling you what tattoo the child is going to get, if it's a barcode, money symbols, names, things like 'Daddy,' I would probably call in an abuse report, is what I would do," said Nascimento.Redefining Refuge has worked with the Tampa Bay area tattoo artist community to help cover up tattoos for child sex trafficking survivors as part of the recovery and healing process. “Think about that. Children in a first world country in the United States of America being branded like cattle," said Nascimento. "That’s what’s happening and it’s happening today." While not a concrete decision for or against the option, it prompted hopeful San Diego football fans to speculate where the team would land. While the #Raiders don't have a home for 2019, they would like to stay in Oakland. But if the lawsuit makes that impossible, expect San Diego and Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium to become clubhouse leaders but don't discount an early move to Las Vegas or even...Reno. Yes, Reno.— Paul Gutierrez (@PGutierrezESPN) December 11, 2018 467
