Scrap metal thieves are becoming so brazen, they're now now taking parts off of gas grills at Walmart in the middle of the shopping day, according to Cleveland's Environmental Crimes Task Force.Sgt. Andrew Ezzo said the crooks took nearly 100 pounds in valves and other parts from display gas grills at the Walmart located on Brookpark Road in Cleveland."The only way they found out is because they sold a couple of display models, and people had to bring them back and said, 'Where's our parts?'" said Ezzo. "They think they can take whatever they want. They think they're entitled to it."Ezzo said his task force has reported a series of thefts at major companies in all parts of the city. Two thieves were caught on surveillance video at Menyhart Plumbing on Lorain Road stealing thousands of pounds in antique home heating radiators. Owner Peter Menyhart said the task force used his surveillance video and its relationship with area scrap yards to make an arrest in less than a day."Basically anything those two guys could physically carry, they carried out of here," Menyhart said. "They didn't have any money, so they're like, 'Hey, lets go steal some scrap, and we could go drop it off at 7 a.m. at the scrap yard and get some cash.'"The scrap yard involved reported the stolen items, and police found suspects in just a few hours.Ezzo said his task force is in a battle, but the efforts of his team have reduced the number of thefts so far in 2018."In 2014, 2015 and 2016, the State of Ohio led the nation in scrap theft," Ezzo said. "The deal that we make with the scrap yards is if I find the victim, the victim is going to pay you whatever you paid for it, that way the scrap yard is not out the money."Menyhart said his company will add additional security cameras. He had nothing but praise for Ezzo and his team."He said, 'I'm going to put out a bulletin. I'm going to catch these guys before the day is out.' (KGTV) -- San Marcos Unified School District teachers and parents flooded the school board meeting Tuesday night asking for the board to come to a contract agreement with their union. The meeting was standing room only. Union officials say they've been without a contract since last June and that they've tried to negotiate with the district. They're fighting for higher pay and smaller class sizes and getting all of these things in writing. There was no item on the agenda at Tuesday's meeting but the superintendent did address the teachers and parents directly during a presentation. Dr. Garcia told the crowd she hears them and appreciates them being present at the meeting but told them the issue with the union's request is a lack of adequate funding at the state level. SCRIPPS — For almost 75 years, the stern of the destroyer USS Abner Read lay somewhere below the dark surface of the Bering Sea off the Aleutian island of Kiska, where it sank after being torn off by an explosion while conducting an anti-submarine patrol.Seventy-one U.S. Navy sailors were lost in the aftermath of the blast, during a brutal and largely overlooked early campaign of World War II.Heroic action by the crew saved the ship, but for the families of the doomed sailors, the final resting place of loved ones lost in the predawn hours of Aug. 18, 1943, remained unknown.On July 17, a NOAA Office of Exploration and Research-funded team of scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego and the University of Delaware aided by four U.S. Navy sailors assigned to the Naval Special Warfare Group discovered the missing 75-foot stern section in 290 feet of water off Kiska, one of only two United States territories to be occupied by foreign forces in the last 200 years.“This is a significant discovery that will shed light on this little-known episode in our history,” said retired Navy Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet, PhD, acting undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “It’s important to honor these U.S. Navy sailors who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”Abner Read was on patrol at about 1:50 a.m. when the massive explosion — presumed to be from a Japanese mine — ripped the destroyer apart. Somehow the crew kept the main part of Abner Read’s hull watertight, and two nearby Navy ships towed it back to port.“This was catastrophic damage that by all rights should have sunk the entire ship,” said?Sam Cox, curator of the Navy and director of the Naval History and Heritage Command.Within months, the destroyer was back in the war.It went on to fight in several battles in the Pacific Theater before being destroyed in November 1944 by a Japanese dive bomber in a kamikaze attack during the battle of Leyte Gulf. Abner Read received four battle stars for her World War II service.Meanwhile, the ship’s shorn stern was lost but not forgotten. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new apartment complex in San Ysidro promises to offer more than 100 affordable apartments to residents. The building, called Paseo La Paz, was made possible in part due to a .3 million grant from the City of San Diego and will offer 137 affordable units. The complex targets families with incomes from 50 to 60 percent of San Diego’s median income – approximately ,000 per year for a family of four. Rents will range from 0 per month for a one-bedroom apartment to ,200 for a three-bedroom unit. Rents will remain affordable for the next 55 years as part of the agreement that secured the grant.
