A species of turtle that was believed to have been extinct 20 years ago is making a comeback.The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said in a press release this month that the Burmese roofed turtles now appear to be in little danger of biological extinction.Conservationists with WCS and Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) rediscovered the creatures, which have natural smirks on their faces, in the wild in the early 2000s.Now, conservationists monitor sandbanks in Myanmar that female turtles use as nesting sites. Eggs are collected, incubated under natural conditions and then the offspring are “head-started” for eventual repatriation into the Chindwin River, WCS says.Conservationists say the captive population of these turtles is approaching 100,000.WCS says complementary conservation efforts are focused on the remaining wild population, which consists of five to six adult females and perhaps as few as two males.Steven G. A North Carolina pastor who led a march to the polls over the weekend that ended with police pepper-spraying participants says he will lead another march on Election Day.On Saturday, Rev. Greg Drumwright led the "I Am Change" march in Graham, North Carolina, from a local AME Church to the Alamance County Courthouse.According to the Raleigh News & Observer, the march included a moment of silence for George Floyd, who was killed during an arrest in Minnesota this summer and whose death sparked a nationwide protest movement against police brutality.Following that moment of silence, the News & Observer reports that deputies and police officers used pepper spray on the crowd and began arresting participants. At least one journalist covering the event was arrested.Some participants told the News & Observer that they were given little warning as to the officer's decision to shut down the event. The Associated Press reports that Graham Police say they issued several warnings to the crowd to move from the roadway before releasing pepper spraying and later arresting eight people.On Sunday, Drumwright confirmed in a TV interview that he intends to finish the march on Election Day. A record number of women are projected to win seats in the House in a massive night for female candidates across the political spectrum.As of Thursday morning, CNN projected at least 100 women would win House races, with 35 women newly elected to the House and 65 female incumbents. That bests the previous record of 85 representatives, according to the Congressional Research Service. There are still two outstanding races that have two women competing against each other, which means that at least 102 women will be serving in the House next year.On the Senate side, CNN projected by Thursday morning that 12 women would win Senate seats, with two newly elected women joining 10 female incumbents. 707

A passenger vehicle intentionally hit a security barrier near the White House on Friday, a law enforcement source told CNN, though the Secret Service said the car didn't breach the secure complex that surrounds the executive mansion.The incident prompted a lockdown at the White House, where President Donald Trump had recently completed talks and a news conference with his Australian counterpart.The Secret Service said the driver of the vehicle was female and was immediately apprehended by uniformed officers. A new campaign is bringing attention to an issue that hasn't been front and center since the pandemic started – missing children.“There has been a lot of awareness, a lot of things have changed, but regarding her case, unfortunately there's nothing,” said Jessica Nu?ez about her missing 15-year-old daughter, Alicia Navarro.Navarro, who has autism, was 14 when she vanished in the middle of the night last September from her home in Glendale, Arizona.Alicia played online games and her mother thinks she was lured away by someone she met online. They had even discussed the dangers in therapy.“And then she wrote me a letter where she sweared to me she was coming back, so that’s what has me very worried, because I know her intention was for her to come back and that’s why I won’t stop looking,” said Nu?ez. “I won’t stop looking until I get answers because it’s been so long.”In a new effort to bring attention to missing children like Alicia Navarro, their pictures will be featured on some gas station pump video screens.
