San Diego Unified School Board president and math teacher Kevin Beiser will introduce a resolution at Tuesday night's meeting demanding action from state and federal lawmakers pass stricter gun control laws."It's an opportunity for us parents students and teachers to speak in unison and call on our elected officials to do what we know is right and implement reasonable gun reform now, said Beiser ahead of the meeting. The board did something similar after the Sandy Hook school shooting back in 2012 but Beiser thinks it's worth stating again. And although it's not included in the resolution, Beiser expects the issue of arming teachers to come up at the meeting.Last week President Trump said he favored arming teachers to protect students. 763

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and local military members are working to put smiles on the faces of kids this holiday season. The 2019 Toys for Tots drive started Sunday. The fire department is partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. They have been collecting toys for more than 15 years. Through December 16, all San Diego Fire facilities will be collecting toys and books. The items must be new and unwrapped. Toys for Tots is in its 71st year. U.S. Marines distribute the donated items to the children each year. Since 1947, more than 244 million children have benefited from the toy drive. Local Marines are asking for volunteers to help distribute the items, Monday through Friday, from 9a to 3 pm. The distribution site is at 9955 Pomerado Road. 790

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric says it's going forward with the second planned power shut-off this week because of growing winds and high fire danger in Northern California.The utility says blackouts will begin around 2 p.m. Saturday in parts of 36 counties. About 940,000 customers — more than 2 million people — will be affected.It's the third preventative shut-off in as many weeks amid concern that gusty winds could knock down power lines and spark fires.Winds picking up Saturday night could gust to more than 85 mph (137 kph) and make conditions extremely difficult for firefighters trying to tame a huge blaze in wine country. 659

Gavin Newsom declared an emergency Tuesday over wildfires burning throughout California as the state's power grid operator pleaded for continued conservation to avoid rolling blackouts. The grid operator praised residents and businesses for astonishing conservation efforts that kept the power on Monday night. The state is in a days-long heatwave that has stressed the electrical system and resulted in rolling blackouts over two nights last weekend. Outages, excessive heat, wildfire and the pandemic have people on edge. Evacuations were in effect or growing in several Northern California communities because of growing fires.
