SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 10News investigation has revealed that the California department responsible for the state’s child welfare program does not maintain data regarding all deaths of children in foster care.  The revelation is prompting calls for immediate action to child welfare services from at least one San Diego-based politician.State law requires counties to report any child death that is determined to be suspected to be the result of abuse or neglect to the California Department of Social Services.  According to the CDSS, each county in California is required to keep track of every foster child that dies while in its custody.Counties are also responsible for reporting all high profile incidents that occur in foster homes to the State Department of Social Services. High profile incidents would include incidents involving death or serious injury. But the CDSS has no master data list available regarding foster deaths and says that information is maintained at the county level.Using open records laws Team 10 collected the total number fatalities of children residing in a foster placement from all 58 counties in the state since 2010.The numbers show more than 250 kids died during that time across the state. 1290

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UCSD and Scripps Institution of Oceanography alumna Megan McArthur will head to space as the pilot for the SpaceX Crew-2 mission in early 2021, NASA announced this week.The Crew-2 flight will be the second SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the International Space Station as part of NASA's commercial crew program.McArthur, who received her doctorate in oceanography from Scripps in 2002, traveled to space aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in 2009. She and her crew were part of a 12-day mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. McArthur operated the shuttle's robotic arm that grabbed and released the telescope, making her the last person to "touch" the telescope. She was born in Honolulu but considers California her home state. She holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from UCLA.The SpaceX Crew-2 flight will be her first trip to the International Space Station.Joining McArthur is NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough as mission commander with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet as mission specialists.McArthur is one of two Scripps Oceanography alumni who are astronauts. Alumna Jessica Meir returned from a visit to the International Space Station in April. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Cajon Valley School District worker crossed into oncoming traffic in his work truck Friday morning, striking a car with a mother and child inside, California Highway Patrol officers said. The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. on Avocado Blvd. north of Challenge Blvd. in the Rancho San Diego area, according to the CHP. Officers say the 55-year-old CVSD employee was driving a Ford pickup with a trailer and made an unsafe left turn movement into oncoming traffic. The truck came into the path of a Ford Fusion and the vehicles crashed head-on. The impact sent both vehicles into the front yard of a home. “Initial indications are that the child safety seat which contained the infant was not properly installed and was found by responding emergency personnel face down on the rear floorboard of the Ford Fusion,” CHP officers said. Both drivers had major injuries but are expected to survive. The infant’s injuries are unknown but did not to be serious, officers said. Drugs and alcohol are not factors in the crash. 1044

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A burglary at a shuttered salon in the College Area has dealt a 'punch to the gut' to an owner struggling to keep her business open.Just before 6 a.m. Sunday morning, video shows someone at the door of 'DO Beauty Boutique on El Cajon Boulevard. In the video, the door can be heard being pried open for several minutes, before the burglar lets himself in. Another intruder soon follows. With flashlights shining, they go shopping for more than 20 minutes before ripping down the surveillance camera."It's gut-wrenching. Just trying not to cry," said salon owner Tiffany Schaaff.Schaaff who opened the salon three years ago."They cleaned us out. Definitely a punch to the gut," said Schaaff.Shelves full of retail hair products are now empty. Also missing were tools of the trade, including flat irons, blow dryers, and scissors. The thieves even took drawers to carry out their haul.The total loss, including damage to the front door, is now at ,000 and climbing. Schaaff has insurance, but even the deductible is a hardship."Very trying. Definitely a month-to-month situation as to whether we are going to continue," said Schaaff.The salon is in its third shutdown of the pandemic. Yearly revenues are down about 75%."We’re bleeding out our pockets ... There’s 0 left in the salon account and we’ve cleared my savings," said Schaaff.An emotional Schaff vows to fight to keep her salon open, but it’s getting tougher every day, and this break-in just dealt her even more pain."I am going to continue persevering.
