CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County 7th grade teacher is the SDCCU Classroom Hero for the month of June.This social studies instructor has a knack for engaging students by asking them to step into the shoes of those they're learning about."Now, when we look at America, it's a little different here right?" Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part. "With many little strokes, a large tree is felled. What does that mean?""He knows every one of his kids." said Aviara Principal Rose Flowers. She says Heath's approach resonates so well with students, discussions often continue outside the classroom. And as students relate to their study subjects, their bond also grows with their teacher."We as adults, when we make those strong connections, which Coach Heath does, it reconnects these kids to that familiar figure that an adult can be trusted," said Flowers. (KGTV) - A border watch group says there are glaring holes along the border that can be plugged with the help of troops.The Department of Defense sent thousands of troops across the border to areas like the San Ysidro Port of Entry. “I don’t know all the intelligence, but it seems like (the troops) are all in the areas where the fence is pretty secure,” said Dan Russell with the Minutemen. The Minutemen is a citizen’s group dedicated to watching the border for illegal crossings. If they see any, they report them to border patrol. “Maybe they’re expecting thousands to show up in Tijuana or Tecate, but if they’re there in large numbers all they have to do is get on a bus, take the highway, drive an hour, and come over a wide open border,” Russell said.Russell says his group volunteers to watch the mile of the border just southwest of Campo. In that mile stretch, there are about five gaps along the border wall.“About every quarter mile, you’d want some eyes on the border,” he said. 1045

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities say a Chicago man has been charged with murder after a fatal fight that began when he put his hands in Thanksgiving leftovers.James Dixon is charged with killing Vincell Jackson, who was the boyfriend of the Thanksgiving party host.A prosecutor says Jackson was trying to escort Dixon out of the Chicago house because he put his hands in leftovers around 3 a.m. Friday.The fight moved to the porch, where law enforcement says Jackson was stabbed at least nine times.Defense attorney Patrick Ryan says Dixon was properly defending himself.A judge set bond at 0,000. 602

CASEY COUNTY, Kent. -- A man in Kentucky not only pulled over but got out of his vehicle to pay his respects while a funeral procession passed. The family was moved by the man's kindness and posted about it on social media and has since gone viral.Cecil Luster was a member of the U.S. Navy. His family celebrated his life yesterday in Casey County. Many drivers pulled over for the procession, led by the Patriot Guard of Kentucky. Cecil's grandson, Drew Richardson, says there was one driver, who was standing outside of his vehicle, who caught his family's attention."When my mom was talking about it afterward, there were tears welling up in her eyes, that someone actually showed respect for our family," Drew Richardson said.Standing with his hands crossed, it was a simple act of kindness that moved the entire family.Mark Meece says he didn't even think twice about getting out of his vehicle and he got the idea from a social media post."I've seen on Facebook where a soldier was standing outside in the rain, and I thought, you know, I need to start doing that to show respect. It was an inspiration to me," Meece said.The family shared the good deed on Facebook and it's been shared and commented on hundreds of times. Meece says the positivity of the social media post has encouraged him. (KGTV) - A former DACA recipient was arrested Monday on his second attempt to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico.El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents received information from Remote Video Surveillance Systems operators that a man had crossed the border fence approximately 3 miles east of Calexico.RVSS monitors showed the man running away from agents as they tried to arrest him, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.After a brief chase, agents caught 23-year-old Mexican citizen Juan Manual Montes-Bojorquez.CBP said Montes had previously been deported in February.“Our agents witnessed and arrested Mr. Bojorquez making an illegal entry into the United States for the second time this year,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. “Border Patrol Agents will always stop, detain, and arrest anyone making an illegal entry into the country irrespective of their immigration or citizenship status.” Montes was booked into the Imperial County Jail on pending charges of re-entry after removal.  1047
