CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — More than 220 teachers are out of jobs in the South Bay and a superintendent has been placed on leave. Jessica Davis has been teaching in the Sweetwater Union High School District for almost five years. She's just one of more than 220 layoffs in the district's effort to balance the budget that's been crippling for years."I really poured my heart and soul into my career," said Davis. "I was more than a little bit shocked that they went that high up on the seniority list," said Davis. "I don't know that she should continue in any capacity," said Davis. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista is launching a new pedestrian safety initiative after seeing a sharp increase in fatal crashes last year.According to the Chula Vista Police Department, nine pedestrians were killed in 2017 on city streets. That’s up 125% from 2016.In the first three months of 2018 there have already been three fatal pedestrian crashes, a 200% increase from the same period last year. Police say it's the first time in four years they’ve had more than one pedestrian killed within the first quarter of the year.The map below shows those killed in auto-pedestrian crashes between January of 2017 to March of 2018. In an effort to combat the trend and educate the public, the city unveiled a new campaign on Thursday called “Stay Safe Chula Vista.”To kick off the program they have named April as “Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month.” The Chula Vista Police Department along with the Fire Department and Department of Traffic Engineering will be working together on enforcement and education.CVPD will have increased patrols targeting both drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Police Friday raided an illegal South Bay marijuana dispensary and made six arrests.According to the Chula Vista Police Department, officers served a search warrant at 9 a.m. on the black market dispensary at 259 Broadway, acting on community complaints.A half-dozen people were taken into custody on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sales, conspiracy to sale marijuana and operating a marijuana dispensary without a license, according to a police statement. China's Tiangong-1 space lab re-entered the Earth's atmosphere around 8.15 a.m. Monday (8:15 p.m. ET Sunday) in a fiery fall, China's Manned Space Agency said.Tiangong-1 plummeted into the middle of the South Pacific, the space agency said."Most parts were burned up in the re-entry process," the agency said.The out-of-control 40-foot long Tiangong-1, or "Heavenly Palace," is one of China's highest profile space projects. The unmanned space lab was launched in September 2011 as a prototype for China's ultimate space goal: a permanent space station that is expected to launch around 2022.But the Chinese government told the United Nations in May 2017 that its space lab had "ceased functioning" in March 2016, without saying exactly why.The incident was embarrassing for China's space program but it hasn't delayed its progress. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) — The man accused of threatening St Rose of Lima Church and School plead not guilty at his arraignment Friday at the Chula Vista Courthouse.During the afternoon proceedings Thomas Escajeda, 61, entered the courtroom and sat shoulders hunched, a frown carved into his face with eyes nervously panning the room.No facts in the case were shared, and bail stayed at 0,000.RELATED: Man accused of threatening South Bay church, school says it's all a misunderstandingAfter the arraignment, Escajeda's attorney Adam Hepburn spoke on his demeanor, "he's never been in custody before, this is his first time ever being arrested this is his first time ever having this type of contact with law enforcement... He is clearly upset, it's a new setting it's very difficult."Escajeda spoke exclusively with 10News from jail Thursday explaining it was all a big misunderstanding.
