LEXINGTON, Va. — The Virginia Military Institute has removed a prominent statue of Confederate Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Around 9:45 a.m. Monday, a crane plucked the statue off its base and slowly hoisted it away at the public military college in Lexington, where allegations of systemic racism roiled the campus this fall. Until several years ago, some cadets were required to salute the Confederate statue. VMI’s board voted to remove it after The Washington Post published a story describing an “atmosphere of hostility and cultural insensitivity.” Founded in 1839, VMI says it is the oldest state-supported military college in the United States. 664

LEXINGTON, Kent. - Wednesday is National Working Parents Day – a time to recognize and appreciate guardians who balance their work and home life. It’s a task that has been especially challenging during the coronavirus pandemic. Since the school year has started back up, many now have to juggle work while overseeing at-home learning.Michelle Martel, a professor and the director of clinical training for the University of Kentucky’s psychology department, says it’s OK for parents to feel overwhelmed and admit they need help at times.“If you have family or close friends in the area that could provide support, that’s a great place to start,” said Martel.Beyond that, if you haven’t already, Martel suggests reaching out to your employer to see how your job can be adjusted to fit into a new work-life balance.“Maybe it involves little different hours. Maybe it involves a little bit more flexibility,” she said. “I think presenting your boss with that idea, you know just, ‘Hey, I was thinking this might make things a little bit easier. Then I can get done what I need to get done, but also manage my kids and it might take the stress off everyone.’ I think most bosses really right now would welcome that.”Martel also says self-care is not selfish and that it’s important for parents to take moments for themselves during this challenging time.“Doing those things and not feeling bad about it, like ‘Oh, there’s a million things you could be doing right now,’ but maybe you just need to go take a hot bath or you need to just go out and take a walk or do something for you. Do those things,” she said.In the end, Martel says with all the new expectations, working parents should remember to be kind to themselves.“Things are not going to be perfect right now,” she said. “Sometimes just having a decent day with your kid is maybe the most important thing.”Another tip is to see what professional mental health services are available through your employer or covered by your work's insurance. This story was first published by Alex Valverde at WLEX in Lexington, Kentucky. 2082

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police are on the hunt for a man who they say set a La Jolla home on fire before pointing a gun at construction crews. Friday morning, Teresa Zlokarnik woke up to an odd smell coming from across the street. “I don’t know where it was coming from, but I saw smoke, and I saw the firemen going into the house,” Zlokarnik said. For the last few months, she saw the home on the other side of the street go from rubble to almost done. But not anymore. At 9:45 a.m., San Diego Fire Rescue responded to an attic fire, set intentionally.“What? An arson? That’s scary. Oh my God,” Zlokarnik said. The homeowner, who asked not to be identified, claimed he knows who did it. “He didn’t show up for three days, and I fired him,” the homeowner said. The homeowner said he believes the suspected arsonist is a disgruntled former employee who was hired to work on the sheet rock. But when the man came to the site Friday morning and saw his replacements at work, he set the attic on fire. In his 40 years of renovating homes, the homeowner said he has never seen this kind of reaction from an employee, current or former.“He said, ‘My price is my price and if not, you are going to hear from me!’ So I heard from him this way,” the man said. He added that the new subcontractors were held at gunpoint. They waited until the suspect left to call 911.The home on Palomino Circle was supposed to be on the market July 1, 2019, for .9 million. But after what happened today, the homeowner said that an open house would have to be pushed back.“Our heater is gone, the electricity is gone, the plumbing is probably damaged,” he said. The homeowner and his company are now playing catch-up. As for Zlokarnik, her sense of security in her neighborhood is now shattered. “Oh my God, he’s out on the loose? God, I am scared. I am locking my doors,” Zlokarnik said. San Diego Police have not caught the suspected arsonist. 1932

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A peace officer claims he was profiled by Walmart employees Wednesday.Johnny Aguirre says he and his wife went to the Walmart in La Mesa and he was carrying a backpack that he usually carries with him. There are items he carries in his backpack that are related to his job as a peace officer. “We walked in, and I got stopped by two greeters, they told me to put the backpack away int he lockers,” he said.Aguirre says the lockers were empty, so it was standard for all customers. He also says he noticed other people were walking around the store with backpacks. He believes employees singled him out because of the way he looked.“I got that feeling that I was profiled and racially discriminated because of the way I was dressed maybe,” he said. He says he was working all day and he was a little dirty.Walmart sent the following statement to 10News: “We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. As a company, we’ve taken several steps to help mitigate the issue of crime and the locker system implemented in our Las Mesa store is just one example of our proactive approach. We take our customer’s claim seriously and will continue to look into this. ”“I got the feeling I was selected, I was profiled, so if this a new policy, they need to train their people better,” Aguirre said. 1322

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - Supporters of a sales tax increase in Lemon Grove plan to gather signatures for the final time this weekend in hopes of qualifying a ballot measure that they say is needed to save the city from disincorporation.Facing gloomy revenue projections in a city with the lowest sales tax rate in the county, supporters want to put a three-quarter cent increase before voters on the March ballot.Without the hike, the city might be forced to dissolve into the county, which would take possession of city assets and likely sell City Hall, said councilman Jerry Jones."We've done all the cuts that we can do," he said. "We're in worse shape than we were 10 years ago."The city spends roughly 80 percent of its budget on public safety, leaving little for infrastructure and other programs like addressing homelessness, Jones said. The tax hike would generate 3 million dollars, raising the city's total sales tax revenue by 38 percent, he said.At the Grove Grinder restaurant, business owner Sharon Jones is skeptical of the doomsday scenario."I think it's just a scare tactic," she said. She thinks the city should help its business community grow, and says raising the sales tax might do just the opposite."There are more businesses closing down here in lemon grove. If they think they're getting the sales tax that comes from businesses, they're not going to get as much as they think they're going to get," she said.Councilman Jones was once opposed to a tax increase too, but now he say it's necessary."There are just no other alternatives if we want to stay a city," he said.Supporters have until September 30 to gather 1,489 signatures to qualify for the March 2020 ballot."We think we can" get enough signatures by the deadline, said Yadira Altamirano, one of the proponents of the Lemon Grove Tax Measure. "We need all of our neighbors and Lemon Grove registered voters to come sign the petition this weekend."Organizers will be collecting signatures in the Sprouts parking lot Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., she said.If the measure doesn't qualify for the March ballot, the council could step in and vote to put a measure on the November ballot, Councilman Jones said. 2239
