At first glance, you may not notice what's different about this box of cereal. Maybe it's just one of those special editions that's in stores for a short time. But if you take a closer look you might ask, what's up with that?When Naomi Frierson walked into her local Walmart and down the aisle, her focus was getting her mom a box of her favorite cereal."I just picked it up and I kind of looked at it," Frierson said. "And I figured it was one of those special edition type of boxes. ... I didn't think much of it."But when she got home, her husband noticed."We proceed to look at it further and realize that not only are there mugshots but they're serial killers," Frierson said. "Not the C-E-R-E-A-L kind unfortunately."The box of "Life" cereal is covered with people synonymous with death. Larry, the Quaker Oats mascot is Jeffrey Dahmer. And instead of being made with 20 whole grains, it's made with 20 whole brains."And then on the nutrition panel you've got stuff like instead of cholesterol it says chloroform," Frierson said. "Down here it says cyanide."Frierson said she was creeped out, but her husband loved it."He immediately recognized all of the different players in the game," Frierson said. "And he thought it was just the coolest thing ever and assured me that it must be art."He was right. The box was a class project made by Lauren Miller, a senior art student at the University of South Florida."I kind of just wanted it to blend in with everything else," Miller said. "I took a bunch of pictures that I found online of serial killers and I used Photoshop to add them to the Life cereal box. I just thought it would be interesting to use Life cereals since these people did take away lives."Miller has a large version of the box in her studio but wanted to see how people reacted to this smaller version in the community.Frierson said, "I had people on my personal Facebook when I posted that thing like, 'Oh my gosh I need to have that. How can I get one? Are there more?'"Frierson said she's keeping this box, and Miller is exploring creating more to sell.Miller said she left a note on the box saying it was art and had already been paid for. But for Frierson, the initial jitters and overall experience was well worth the price."I think (it was) three dollars well spent for an interesting piece of art," Frierson said.A creepy class project, taking on a life of its own."I would say a solid 'A' so if you didn't get an 'A' I'll call your professor," Frierson said. 2539

Average rates on long-term mortgages continue to fall to new record lows, as the key 30-year loan dropped below 3% for the first time in 50 years. The stagnant economic recovery in the face of the coronavirus pandemic is keeping inflation tamped down despite pent-up homebuying demand. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the average rate on the 30-year home loan fell this week to 2.98% from 3.03% last week. These are the lowest levels since Freddie Mac began tracking averages in 1971. The rate averaged 3.81% a year ago.In their update, Freddie Mac says the low rates has led to increased homebuyer demand. Meanwhile, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association, refinancing applications increased recently, about 12 percent in the last week. However, Freddie Mac warns that with an increase in coronavirus cases, the economy can stagnate and cause temporary job layoffs to possibly become permanent. The average rate on the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage declined to 2.48% from 2.51%, from last week. 1008

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has again denied parole for a member of the infamous "Mason family" who is serving time for a murder committed 50 years ago.Newsom blocked the release of 71-year-old Leslie Van Houten from prison Friday, despite a recommendation from the California parole board that she be freed.It's the fourth time in four years that Newsom has blocked Van Houten's release from prison. Newsom said in his Friday decision that she still poses a danger if released.Van Houten is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and others kill a Los Angeles couple in 1969. As the nation debates on whether to reopen schools this fall, President Donald Trump said schools should “100%” be open this fall, despite concerns from educator unions and others over the spread of the coronavirus.During his coronavirus news conference on Wednesday, Trump was asked whether he planned on sending his son and grandchildren back to school this fall.“Yes, I am comfortable with that,” Trump said.“I would like to see the schools open. Open 100% and we will do it safely, we will do carefully but when you look at the statistics -- I just read having to do with children and safety ---- they are very impressive. They have very strong immune systems,” Trump added.Trump said that it is his belief that children are less likely to spread the virus. But research thus far has not been conclusive to back Trump’s claims.A study released from South Korea and published by the CDC found that while children under age 9 were less likely to spread the virus, youth ages 10 through 19 were just as likely as adults of spreading the virus.The study also found that closing schools in several Chinese cities, including Wuhan, showed that school closure and social distancing significantly reduced the rate of COVID-19 among contacts of school-aged children. “The role of household transmission of SARS-CoV-2 amid reopening of schools and loosening of social distancing underscores the need for a time-sensitive epidemiologic study to guide public health policy,” the researchers wrote.The American Federation of Teachers this week pointed toward a three-point plan that the US should implement for reopening schools.“Our plan details three conditions essential for schools to reopen,” wrote Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. “First, the average daily community infection rate among those tested for the coronavirus must be very low. (New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has required the rate not to exceed 5 percent for at least 14 days.) Second, schools must employ public health protocols, including 6-feet social distancing, masks, deep cleaning and handwashing stations. Third, adequate resources must be available to enact these safeguards, including funding for additional nurses, guidance counselors and teachers to reduce class size.”Weingarten said that Trump has politicized reopening schools, and she called on Congress to approve giving schools additional funding to reopen. Weingarten projects that it would take 6 billion nationwide to provide essential services for schools."Expenses have increased because of the fight against coronavirus," she said. "They not only need funds to provide essential services, the average school will need an additional .2 million, or ,300 per student, to open its doors safely." 2770
