A cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert in North Africa is now sitting over the Southeastern U.S. and the Gulf of Mexico. It brings increased particles into the air and could cause respiratory issues while many states struggle with COVID-19 cases. An animation from NASA shows the movement of the plume and where it sits as of June 25. Saharan dust plumes moving east-to-west across the Atlantic are nothing new. However, this plume is thicker than normal, bringing higher levels of desert dust to the atmosphere. 519

A Ferguson city councilman appears to have defeated the St. Louis County prosecuting attorney who oversaw the controversial grand jury inquiry into the 2014 police killing of unarmed black teen Michael Brown in a Tuesday primary, according to unofficial election results.Wesley Bell would replace Robert McCulloch, who took office in 1991. A former public defender and municipal court judge, Bell, who is black, ran as a reformer and pledged to end cash bail, "create a task force to identify factors leading to wrongful convictions" and increase transparency in the system.McCulloch was criticized for his handling of the investigation into Darren Wilson, the white officer who shot Brown after a brief altercation on a Ferguson street. Wilson was never charged in connection with the case, which eventually touched off a Justice Department probe that accused the police department of systematic racial bias. There is no Republican candidate in the race, so Bell would be all but assured of taking over from McCulloch when his term ends. The unofficial election results show Bell defeating the 7-term incumbent by more than 13 points, with nearly 57 percent of the vote.Bell told The New York Times in an interview before the primary that if he had been in the job after Brown's killing, he would have appointed a special prosecutor."The relationship between the prosecutor's office and law enforcement is so close," he said, "and therein lies the definition of conflict of interest."In a series of tweets after the election results came in, activist DeRay Mckesson, who became a national figure during the Ferguson protests, cheered McCulloch's apparent ouster."Shout-out to all of the activist and organizers who led the grassroots effort to get Wesley Bell elected," he wrote. "People power has impact. #ByeBob" 1827

A former teammate of Colin Kaepernick condemned the NFL's recent embrace of peaceful protest as "half-hearted," calling it "PR for the current business climate."According to former 49ers S Eric Reid, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has not personally called to apologize to Kaepernick despite the league's admission that they were "wrong" not to embrace peaceful protest sooner."What the @NFL is doing is half-hearted at best," Reid tweeted Monday. "@nflcommish has gotten comfortable saying he "was wrong" as if his mere acknowledgement reconciles his admitted wrongdoing. He hasn't even called Colin to apologize, let alone reconcile, proving this is only PR for the current business climate."In 2016, Reid was the first player to kneel beside Kaepernick during the national anthem to demonstrate against systemic racism and police brutality.Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the 49ers following the 2016 season. Despite being just 28 at the time and a few years removed from a Super Bowl appearance, Kaepernick has not since been offered a contract by any NFL team. The league has since admitted it was wrong for "not listening to NFL players" regarding anthem protests, but has not mentioned Kaepernick specifically. In the wake of a wave of civil unrest following the death of George Floyd, the Goodell and the NFL released a statement saying that they "encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest." In that same statement, the NFL condemned racism and said it believes that "Black Lives Matter."On Thursday, prior to the 2020 season opener between the Chiefs and Texans, the NFL released a video of Alicia Keys performing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" that featured images of Kaepernick kneeling during the anthem.Reid said Monday that it was "diabolical" that the league used the images of Kaepernick despite the fact that he is still without a job."Roger Goodell uses video of Colin courageously kneeling to legitimize their disingenuous PR while simultaneously perpetuating systemic oppression, that the video he's using fights against, by continuing to rob Colin of his career," Reid said. "It's diabolical."Reid himself has claimed he was blackballed for kneeling alongside Kaepernick. Reid played out his contract with the 49ers and went unsigned in the offseason. During one interview with the Bengals, he claimed team owner Mike Brown specifically asked if he would continue kneeling, and when Reid declined to answer, he was not offered a contract. In 2019, he and Kaepernick settled their collusion grievances against the league for an undisclosed amount.Reid was signed by the Carolina Panthers during the 2018 season. After spending the 2019 season with the team, he was released and is currently a free agent.Dozens of players chose to kneel or raise fists during the national anthem prior to week 1 games on Sunday, including seven teams who chose not to take the field. 2908

"When we are around pools, I always have to be next to my children."Kambar is inventing a device called Morningstar SOS. It floats in the pool, equipped with cameras on the top and bottom. 459

A disturbing trend is developing across the U.S. regarding vehicles striking Black Lives Matter protesters.Just since the grand jury announced its decision in the Breonna Taylor case on Wednesday, vehicles have driven through protests in at least three cities: Denver, Buffalo and Los Angeles.Wednesday night, hours after it was revealed that the police officers who shot the 26-year-old EMT would not be charged for her killing, a man drove his car through a crowd of demonstrators calling for justice outside the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. The driver was detained. That same night, a protester was struck by a truck in Buffalo’s Niagara Square, sending her to the hospital with broken bones. In that case, authorities have arrested the driver on charges of reckless endangerment and reckless driving. And most recently, multiple vehicles drove through a protest in Hollywood Thursday night, one of which struck and injured a person. That victim was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.LAPD says a group of more than 300 protesters were marching near Sunset Boulevard when a blue pick-up truck maneuvered through the crowd and became involved in an altercation shortly after 9 p.m. As the driver of the truck attempted to get away from the situation, police say the vehicle struck a protester standing in the street.Moments later, police say a white Prius attempted to drive around the same protest and also became involved in an altercation with people in the crowd.“A black pick-up truck leading the protests accelerated and pinned that white Prius in, forcing it to come to a stop,” wrote police in a statement. “The driver of the Prius attempted to flee the area and reversed into a green mustang behind it. That vehicle was also participating in the protest.”Police say both the drivers of the truck and Mustang attempted to extract the driver of the Prius from the vehicle, but that driver was able to get away. Several blocks away, that motorist was detained by Hollywood officers, according to police. All the drivers and victims involved in both altercations have been identified by Hollywood officers and an investigation is ongoing.Protests are expected to continue throughout the coming days as people demand justice in the Breonna Taylor case.On Wednesday, the Kentucky grand jury indicted one of the three Louisville police officers who entered Taylor's apartment in March and fatally shot the emergency medical technician. However, the indicted officer isn’t being charged in connection with Taylor’s killing, he’s being charged with wanton endangerment for shots fired into her neighbor’s apartment. After the grand jury's charging decision was announced, the Kentucky attorney general held a press conference, during which he said the officers who shot Taylor were "justified" in their actions because they were responding to a shot fire by Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who has said that he believed the police were intruders. 3027
