SAN DIEGO, Calif, (KGTV) - An information meeting Thursday evening is one of the final steps before plans to expand the Miramar Landfill are sent to the state. Currently, the landfill is expected to close Sept. of 2025, but this new plans will extend that to an estimated closure of Nov. of 2031, and also increase the height of the landfill by a maximum of 25 feet. Program Manager for the Solid Waste Local Enforcement Agency Bill Prinz said these dates could change depending on how quickly trash is put into the landfill. He also said this increase in capacity means about 10 million cubic yards of trash are being added to the already about 87 million cubic yards. Currently, 87,760,000 cubic yards of Gross Airspace are being used, and the plan will bring the maximum height to 97,354,7355 cubic yards of Gross Airspace. The meeting Thursday, May 28 is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be information focused. The public can tune in virtually to listen, ask questions and offer feedback, however no decisions will be made. Prinz said the LEA will send the plans, including the feedback from the meeting, to Sacramento, and the state will have 60 days to either accept or deny the plan. He said he does not expect them to deny it.The attend the meeting, click here: https://bit.ly/may10meeting 1307

SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12.  1144

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As protesters gather across the country to spread the message that black lives matter and there is a problem of police brutality against black people, not everyone is ready to join in the marches, but there are other ways to help the combat racism. “To make change, to build a movement, it takes all sorts of action. Everyone doesn’t need to go in the streets,” said Dayo Gore, UCSD Associate Professor in Ethnic Studies and Critical Gender Studies. While many have said they want change both verbally and through social media, she said people of color want that support to be taken to the next level. “This is not enough, your apology is not enough, feeling sorry is not enough, feeling my pain is not enough, I need some actual real change,” she said. To get that real change, people can use their voting powers to elect officials who will be an advocate, which is a point President Obama made in a publication addressing how people can make a difference in combating racism. He also noted that when making demands for officials, be specific with what you’re asking so it’s harder to ignore. Gore emphasized that point, citing specific examples of room for change in the San Diego community. She suggested a community review board that’s independent of the police department to review activity and oversee actions taken by police. She also said funding within the police department could be reevaluated. “Funding other things that will make communities more viable and able to survive, instead of simply policing communities,” said Gore. She also said in order to help get rid of racism, it’s important to first acknowledge there is an issue and educate yourself. “It starts with understanding what the problem is, and then figuring out where you best can raise your voice,” she said. She said another active step to take is speaking up among peers if someone says something racist, even if it’s uncomfortable. “When you’re hanging out with friends, do you say something when people say things racist or make assumptions based off the color of their skin?” she questioned. Gore also suggested people find groups in the community to both follow and support financially. Below is a list of suggestions of groups to research and support provided by Gore, which she said was created by another UCSD faculty member. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- It was a battle over workers rights at a rally downtown Thursday. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez directly addressing the group against her proposed Assembly Bill. Assembly Bill 5 would affect any independent contractor including Uber and Lyft drivers, yoga teachers even hairdressers. The group at Thursday’s rally was made up mostly of adult entertainers. “I’ve been doing fine I like the freedom to educate myself and if someone’s going to stop me from that I want to do something about that and voice my opinion," one woman told 10News. The bill would make many independent contractors full time employees, forcing employers to provide overtime, health care and sick leave. Assemblywoman Gonzalez rebutted the group today. "There’s nothing in the law that says an employee has to work from 9 to 6. Any employer can tell you to work two hours, one hour, any hours you choose. There’s nothing in the law that says an employer can’t be flexible.”Some say they don’t want it because they prefer the flexibility and freedom to decide hours that comes with independent contracting. 1104
