BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhuanet) -- A new device is being developed by American engineers to ease pain of blood sugar testing in diabetics, according to foreign media report last week.The upcoming device is the research target of a team of engineers at Arizona State University. It is specifically designed for patients with type1diabetes and type2 diabetes, according to a report in the "Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology,"  The traditional method of testing blood sugar levels involves painful pricks on the fingers to draw blood for testing. The inconvenient and painful process may somehow leave diabetics lax in their testing. The blood sugar levels, when poorly controlled, are very likely to trigger complications including heart disease, kidney disease and retinopathy.Unlike the old testing method, the new device could help people keep track of their blood sugar levels without the need to break the skin. It draws tears to measures the blood sugar levels in the fluid and gives just an accurate reading of blood sugar levels. "This new technology might encourage patients to check their blood sugars more often, which could lead to better control of their diabetes by a simple touch to the eye." said Jeffrey T. LaBelle, developer of the device.The new testing device has drawn great interest from investors due to its promising prospects. However, it still awaits a significant amount of testing before it can hit the market.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Apple Inc. on Tuesday announced that iPad 2, the second-generation of its popular tablet computer, will be available in China's Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and additional countries and regions in April.The company also confirmed that iPad 2 will go on sale in 25 countries on March 25 in addition to the United States, where the device first hit market on March 11 and has seen strong demand."While competitors are still struggling to catch up with our first iPad, we've changed the game again with iPad 2," Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive officer, said in a statement."We're experiencing amazing demand for iPad 2 in the U.S., and customers around the world have told us they can't wait to get their hands on it. BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's central government on Wednesday called on local authorities to step up efforts to ensure a stable market supply of daily necessities, such as food and clothing, as freezing weather continues to plague south and southwest China.The Ministry of Commerce required local government departments to guide companies to increase supplies such as rice, edible oil, meat and vegetables.It also required local departments to closely watch market changes and release reserves of commodities when necessary, said a statement on its website.The statement said the government of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has urged local supermarkets to maintain the prices of 10 types of vegetables that are affordable to the public, while authorities in the rain and snow-battered Guizhou and Hunan provinces guided logistics companies and wholesales markets to take measures to insure supplies.The Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday also ordered local departments to expand areas for growing vegetables when conditions allow, as agricultural experts were also sent to fields to help farmers save their crops.The country's meteorological authority forecast Wednesday that over the next three days, heavy snow and icy rain would continue in provinces and municipalities including Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Chongqing.

BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China will further its efforts to harness the Huaihe River over the next five to 10 years in a bid to support the economic development of the regions along the river.The decision was announced Friday in a statement released after an executive meeting of the State Council, China's Cabinet, which was presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.The work will include upgrading dams and water gates in flood diversion programs and building more irrigation and water conservancy projects in low-lying lands along the Huaihe River, said the statement.Further, efforts will be made to guard against water pollution and help urban and rural residents in the Huaihe River regions have sufficient access to clean water, it said.Also, more flood control reservoirs will be constructed, while more residents will be relocated from flood diversion areas as well as flood land.The cabinet urged government departments to earmark more funds and enhance management and cooperation in implementing these measures.The 1,000-kilometer Huaihe River, the third longest water way in China, originates from Mount. Taibai, central Henan Province, and runs eastward between the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, the two largest rivers in the country. It cuts through Henan and east China's Anhui and Jiangsu provinces before entering the Yangtze River via the Hongze Lake.The flood-prone river has a drainage area of about 180,000 square kilometers.

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. space shuttle Discovery landed safely at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday, ending its nearly 27-year flying career as the world's most- traveled spaceship.According to NASA, Discovery touched down at 11:57 a.m. EST ( 1657 GMT) after a 13-day resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS)."For the final time: wheels stop," Discovery's commander Steven Lindsey called out as the shuttle rolled to a full stop.Discovery lifted off on Feb. 24 from the Kennedy Center and arrived at the space station on Feb. 26.During the mission, the astronauts installed a spare closet module on the space station, completed some important repairs and delivered the first humanoid robot, though it will need more time to be assembled and made operational.The 330-pound R2 consists of a head and a torso with two arms and two hands. Once it is unpacked -- likely several months after its arrival at the station -- it will initially be operated inside the Destiny laboratory for operational testing, but over time both its territory and its applications could expand.Aboard the station, its primary job for now is teaching engineers how dexterous robots behave in space. However, the hope is that through upgrades and advancements, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or additions to the station or perform scientific work.
